Okay, excuse me cutting down original post but just wanted to really answer these few points:
I have a very firm handshake.
Yes, am afraid I do judge people on their handshake.
Defo not a man-thing (cos I'm not... least I wasn't last time I looked!?!)
The firmness of a handshake is very important to me - job interviews, closing a deal, meeting people... I could go on!!

Mines pretty firm and i shake hands with people on first meets and i also shake hands of friends who i dont see often.
I do like a firm handshake rather than a limp one but dont really know why

I had a handshake from someone the other day when I thought I new them well enough for there not to be the need for one.
I was left feeling 'This person wants to distance themselves from me'.

That`s interesting !!
I lived in France for a while and there, you have to shake hands with everybody each day that you meet them!! They would find it really strange if you didn`t !
Jeeez, I'm glad I don't live there. There'd be no time fer the pocket billiards!! :shock:

i always used to shake hands with some one on a deal or i had not seen in a long while, and yes i prefere a firm shake. oh err mrs redface

i have noticed recently with the younger generation i play pool with in the pub, that its a shake every time you meet now.

Just remember more than five shakes and it's classed as playing.
I personally think handshake is very formal, sign of respect rather than distancing.
Would you rather slap their bum to confirm a deal (work place or not), or give them a hug, kiss on the cheek? Handshake seems closer than a nod and a wave, especially if it's two hands together.

I like to shake hands, some guys think it's weird for a woman but hey ho, firm but not pianful is good, lingering is bad, being gentle because I'm a girlie ( :shock: ) is bad.
I did once change solicitors because the first one I met had the weakest-wet-fishest-limpest handshake I'd ever experienced, it was truely awful - I couldn't deal with the man.

A good firm single shake is all that's required, not one where you are thinking more about whether the other person is going to release their grip or not (which can leave you thinking about whether the other person feels you are distancing themselves from you :shock:
The other type I really feel uncomfortable with is the "double" hand clasp. confused

There just seems to be something insincere about it. (You know, the one creepy undertakers usually use) :shock: :shock:
But above all, I always look whoever I am shaking hands with straight in the eye. If they look away, that tells another story completely wink

The nicest trait in France is the greeting kiss cool

So did I and after the entire office had wasted an hour going around shaking hands with everyone ("le tour") I would then go and wash mine. The reason being a hell of a lot of French men would walk straight out of the gents after going for a pee (or worse!) without bothering with basic hygiene and washing their own hands. God knows what bugs were being passed around.
