Hi, just looking for other peoples thoughts. We live in an area that is difficult to describe directions (anyone that has been to skelmersdale will now what we're on about). To assist us in meeting people and giving them the easiest chance of finding us I decided to mark the route on a map so it was clear to see. I then tried to upload the map as a photo but it was declined. After reading the AUP I can understand why. For those that haven't read it then the following applies to photos being uploaded:
Photos
All photos shall contain the account holder(s); it should not be possible to identify any third parties.
No person who appears to be under the age of 18.
No identifiable people in the background.
No email address, URLs or mobile/telephone numbers.
Photos that are deemed to be too obscene or inappropriate for this site may be removed.
So the photo's were declined as they didn't contain the account holder. Ok I thought, no problem. To alleviate this I added a Pic of the account holder to the picture. So to be clear there was a picture of the account holder with a map with a route marked on it attached onto the picture to make one pic. When I then tried to upload this picture they were again declined. I then opened a support ticket to question why and to cut a long story short was advised that they were inappropriate for the site!
I honestly can't see why. They do not infringe on anyones privacy. There is no house number on them it just guides you onto a street. We have uploaded the same pics onto another site were they have been cleared. Yes the other site also declined the maps but then cleared them once they had a pic with them. What exactly makes them inappropriate?
What are your thoughts on this? Is a map with a red line marking a route to a street really that inappropriate?
Di,
As an alternative you could always :
(a) message those attending with a link to googlemaps
- for example save this link
- then add your post code, thus
(don't worry AA1 1AA doesn't exist as a post code)
- then anyone clicking on this link should get the Google Map, and whilst not getting them to the door it will get them within the immediate area
(b) use Shrep to create a meeting and in the location field add your post code
both of these would allow you to share the info so as to help with directions, so people can either use a sat nav or at least be able to print off and follow a map.
Hope this helps
The only issue I see with it is you could have undesirables hanging around your street to try and figure out who you are. That really wouldn't be cool.
We have enough pictures on our profile to be able to work out who we are I guess, even though there are no face pics. Our street isn't all that big so someone could figure out where we live.
I'd guess that could be the reason it's not allowed?

1. Use google maps.
2. Ask people who might want to attend your house, to use AA ruote planner, you need to give them your full post code.
3. Ask people who might want to attend your house, if they have sat nav, and get them to use that.
4. Get them to buy an old fashioned map of your area.
5. You meet them down the road, at a pub or supermarket, and they follwo you back to your house.
6. When they get lost, they ring you, and you 'talk' them in.
Please, I don't want to sound irate but I am an adult. I am also very aware on how to give directions etc. Unfortunately not everyone is good at following them. Especially when they get to the area where we live. Not everyone has sat nav. And allthough people can buy a map that doesn't automaticaly make them able to follow directions. As I think I said before a picture paints a thousand words.
The point I am trying to make is what makes these pics inapropriate? They don't invade anyone's privacy. They aren't leading them anywere exept to a street. It is no different than giving out your details to someone in a message.
We do all of the things that you just said Sara when meeting (except meet them and they follow) but when you've invited a dozen people it get's to be a bit of a pain when 8 out of 10 of them call and need directions and need "talking" in. The aim of these pics was to make it easier on us. Yes we can email them but it would be easier for us if we could just have them in our private gallery and then attach them to a message as we don't give out our email address.
Di,
By the way using Google Map link, as suggested earlier does actually bring up your place
Whether it's mature or not, the final decision is at their discretion
The AUP on pictures is highly unlikely to be altered when there are other alternatives in this case. I can understand that you can make the pics private, however if we were to allow maps to be uploaded then we would have to allow a lot of other things that are currently disallowed by the AUP be uploaded. Honestly your mind would boggle if you knew the random stuff that gets uploaded now.
And Chris-1977, I do understand your frustration.
HnS, I expect that Admin have a lot of other stuff on their plates at the moment. However if Chris-1977 submits a support ticket, then I am sure they will re-look at it.
As has already been suggest, by noladreams submit a support ticket to admin.
These go direct to admin.
To be honest, if you feel so strongly that maps should be allowed and an exception to the AUP on photos should be made, then I would submit a support ticket. This would allow Admin to have a look at the case again for you. Personally, I think that would be better than it being discussed by someone who is not anything to do with Admin.
But up to you.
One other point that might help clear up the "appropriateness" of uploading maps etc:
Only this week I had to decline submissions giving pictorial directions to a "secret" dogging site. I know it's not quite the same thing but - in principal - if one member is allowed to upload maps then it sets a precedent that other members will abuse. ;-)
