I have a 16 year old son and I was taling to him the other day and it occured to me that..He is at an old to be a father. This to me sent shivers down my spine! It was the sheer fact that the level of responsibilty it takes to raise a child.
Then got me thinking you can not buy a drink, a packet of cigarettes or watch porn at 16.
But you are able to provide all that is needed to raise a child?
Surely this doesnt make sense or does it?
Years ago it was common pactice, but have times changed?
When I was a teenager we were able to get a saturday job at 15, or some used to work younger helping the local milkman, down the sweet shop etc.
But changing the age limit to work until 16 has this hindered the teenagers to be able to take on some sort of responsiblty at an earlier age thus making them ready for parenthood?
Changing the age of consent won't stop kids having kids!
No matter WHAT age it's set at the urge to experiment sexually is a nature imperative which is very hard to resist and would only serve to criminalise those unfortunate enough to get 'caught'. Sex education is the answer, making sure that any sexual activity is safe sex...
:P
I think ages of (whatever) should be equalised more. You can die for your country at 17 but you can't buy a beer for another year. (If you see what I mean).
But kids shouldn't be kept ignorant until an age and then thrown into the world unprepared and uneducated. My son was given sips of drinks at Christmas etc and found out what he liked and that drinking himself stupid wasn't clever. Didn't stop him doing it a couple of times, but some of his friends still go out every week just to get bladdered.
(In edit) Not much we can do about the practialities of sex for our kids. But not switching TV over every time someone gets hot and heavy and actually talking about it can help.
for sex-no.
For drinking alcohol-yes
The age of consent is never going ot stop kids from doing things. When I was a teenager the age of consent was just another rule to be broken...
Education is the key.
Raising the age of consent wont change anything i was a mum before the age of 16 but before then i had been a child carer and held down several part time jobs i knew my responsibilities unlike the father.
As far as drinking goes we were always allowed a drink in the house yeah we did go over the top a few times but no where near the amount most teeagers do and i do the same with my son
It ain't gonna make a blind bit of difference .. kids will do what they want to do.
It's 18 to drink or buy cigs now, doesn't stop kids drinking on the streets or smoking.
It's 16 to legally have sex, doesn't stop them shagging like rabbits.
As far as I've heard the only difference this will make is keeping kids in education and off the streets, I may be wrong though.
