Don't put anything on the Web that you don't want to share with the world.
WWW = World Wide Web..... the clue is in the name! :giggle:

That's not the point of the question.

Isn't it?
In my opinion if you want to keep things a secret, don't post them on the net.
End of debate for me. wave

That's not the point of the question.

I think it's exactly the point - the choice is simple: either put it there knowing that others can see it, or don't and they won't.
The site's always been viewable by non-members and it's not caused any huge problems yet, at least to my knowledge - because people know that and are careful what they post.
If you're not comfortable, don't post. It's not open to abuse if you don't put it there.
On the bright side, I don't know if you are aware, but the site owners have done their bit to make sure that the site isn't 'spidered' by the big search engines so the ads and images etc don't appear on Google and MSN Search etc.

So why restrict access to profiles?

Perk of being a member?

I voted yes I'm aware and no i don't care!
The point of restricting certain access is just to tempt people to join the site, I don't think it is anything to do with privacy!

They actually do, this was proved to me when my ad was found on google and it was posted on another forum.
No, there are links to profiles when you type in a username. The person has to be a member and logged in to be able to lift a picture to post it elsewhere.

Ah you didn't read what I wrote. "They have done their bit". See http://www.swingingheaven.co.uk/robots.txt
That's ALL they can do to prevent it. They cannot stop minor search engine spiders who don't honour from indexing the site. Those small search engines are themselves indexed by Google et al and that's how information from here ends up on Google.
As Blonde so accurately put it, if you don't want it seen then don't put it on here, security through obscurity never works. Once it's on the web it's permanently on the web regardless of whether it's a members only section. That's the way the web works I'm afriad.

The adverts are free to view, along with the display pics, it's only the private gallery you can't see.
I've just sent Peanut a google search result to prove this.

I've just looked at the ads. I can see pictures on the ad. when I'm logged in. When I'm not logged in, I can't.
What did you type into Google?

Can you share this information with us?
I think that you should only be able to view the forum or anything else on this site, if you are a member.
If there were people who were thinking of joining then give them a free taster, that way they may well be more liable to join? That does not mean clear access to the forum in my view. dunno

Don't worry about it, it was a flawed premise. The link only gave you access if you were logged in. If you weren't then you just got Joe Public access.
I think that you should only be able to view the forum or anything else on this site, if you are a member.

It all depends on how you access the site. If you are Joe Soap just using a browser then the browser will honour the authentication protocols and as such only members can get access that way.
Google having links to pages is neither here nor there. Once you follow the link you still have to have access rights.
Remember, the search engine only index links, they don't cache the information on the page if there isn't public access to it. Other sites may well have different methodology but in the end it's all about normal people using browsers. If crackers want to get to the goodies they will... eventually. 99% of people don't come into that category though.
Mind you, someone running a website or two should know all this.

Darlin, non-members have always been able to see the forum. They used to be able to post as a guest and they used to be able to chat in the one and only chat room, too, before it became a "pay site"
I really don't understand why everyone gets so precious about privacy.
Don't post things on the web if you don't want the world to see them.
Same as you wouldn't put an ad in a paper if you didn't want people to read it.

That’s not entirely true, you don’t have to be a member or signed in to view the ads or pictures whether by visiting the site or via google links.
However the profiles themselves are restricted to signed in members only and that’s good enough for us  Just dont put personal info on ad's or forums.

"Access rights" being the key term.

Everyone with a browser and internet connection has those access rights, that being the point (excluding viewing profiles)

I've tried looking at a profile and an ad. with pictures. The pictures were not viewable when I wasn't logged in. When I logged in, I could view the pictures.
i know what everyones saying that dont post if you dont want the world wide to see it. but i think it would be nice that a private club was just that, private.
as for pics, as ive said before face pics are not considered explicit and therfore are available in the gallery for all to see. i have my reasons to keep my face pic private ( no its not to stop scaring people lol) so i only have it in private gallery.

The point I was trying to make is that "access rights" includes full access right through partial access to no access.
Non-members can see the ads and the photo thumbnails, but they can't see the full size pics, neither can they reply to ads. Likewise non-members can't see any of the gallery pics.
Non-paying members have slightly more access, but again, not full access.
Others have said it but i'll repeat it.
Do not put anything onto the internet you don't want found because it will be, sooner or later, it's just a question of how long it takes, if someone is looking for it.
It's a pointless debate, until that little fact above is accepted and taken notice of.
How funny it should crop up here, when its currently causing all sorts of stupidity on another site.

We weren't being very clear, but by right clicking on the thumbnail and selecting propeties and copying the direct link to your browser you can access the picture very easily, you just delete the thumbs/ line.
But like others have pointed out, including yourself, dont give to much details on ANY website.

Ah, in that case there's a security hole and admin should be made aware of it. Easily sortable though I would have thought.

Let me get this straight. You denied you were the same person as someone on another site thought you were.
They copied & pasted your ad from here to prove it.
You come here, miffed that this site has allowed them to show you up.
dunno
Correct me if I'm wrong- but theres a simpler way to stop it happening. rolleyes
Search engines can crawl a lot of this site and non members can view a lot, this includes profiles, there are limits though most notably photo's, those that we have rated as not suitable for minors do not get displayed.
This subject has come up before and one member was horrified that this was the case, myself I was surprised as I would have thought that most people would take a look around the site before joining, did they expect things that they wrote to not appear?
We won't be changing what is displayed here and there's never been any secret about it.

Ditto - I know I had a very thorough mooch round SH before joining and now that there's a membership fee, I find it even more unlikely that people don't take a good look around first.
I'm with several others, if you don't want people to read certain things about you, apply some restraint when posting.
I am happy that anyone can read what they can. If I wish to say something private I PM.
May be a button to send to all friends would be useful, but I have never needed it yet!
