Now like a lot of people out there I subscribe to Sky. It costs over £40 a month which lets be fair, is a lot of money. Then they come along and want to charge us for " pay per view " events.
I have always said this was one big rip off when they started this a few years back with the boxing. Then they brought it in for certain footie matches, and then for other events too. I have subscribed a few times to Chelsea games but now even that has been switched to Setanta sports, which is another tenner a month, for which I am not going to pay extra for.
What made me laugh though about the greedy money grabbers at Sky is this, They have started to advertise about a boxer called Amir Khan. They were placing him amongst the legends of the sport, even though he ain't won anything at all yet. They have paid millions to be able to show his next whatever many fights on Sky, at a cost of
Well on Sat night Amir Khan had his first fight on Sky, and funny as I found it, he lost. Not just lost but was knocked out in About a minute of the first round. lol
So now Sky have paid out this large ammount of money and the guy gets whooped on his first fight, which means Sky are now pooping themselves as to who is now going to pay to watch this guy next time.
Also the England football games have now been taken away from Sky and are now On Setanta sports with NO highlights later in the evening at all. I feel the national games should be on terestrial telly, and NOT something you have to pay extra for.
So do people think the pay per view is a rip off, and is there anyone out there who think, serves Sky right for the massive loss of revenue over this boxer now?
Is this just another example of how we are all ripped off in this country on a daily basis, and us Brits with the stiff upper lip, just grin and bear it?
Pay per view is ok for those who dont have the full package..
If you rarely watch movies or sporting events then there may be one on once in a while you fancy watching so the price is reasonable....
Lets face it..........£14-99 is cheaper than going to watch it live.....
As for Khan........
You win some.......you lose some.....
Not used sky for a long time and i dont use any pay per view things other than an odd film if im bored oh and setanta is free i think for Virgin Media users (was the last time my friend bombarbed my house to watch some blokes kick a ball around for 90 mins anyway)she has sky rolleyes

Not free, but i think you can include it in the bigger packages, it's not on the basic package anyway

You get it if you have the large package. We've got it but never watch it...

Oh i think im on the large package confused: or is it xl i never opted to have it nor do i pay for it, never use it come to that just those cheeky mates who nick my telly every so often lol
Frankly I reckon paying anything for TV beyond a licence is silly.
There's plenty on (should one wish to watch it rolleyes ) on Freeview or Freesat. There's even HD on the latter.
Add to that when you do pay you still have to watch adverts, what's with that? dunno

I remember when Sky was per month all in

Your showing your age now ya old codger. lol
Sky like anything is worth the money if you watch it.
BBBC mainly just pisses me off anyway, and with only two channels they have to put programmes on there to satisfy everyone. On Sky there are channels that I want to watch, namely sport.
When I pay that ammount of money and then get told that Englands national games are no longer on there, because some clown in the EU says it is unfair to have a manopoly. Seems the EU have a manopoly on everything so maybe they should be forced to give some of their powers up?
So along comes a competetor namely Setanta who win the rights to screen the matches but now I am expected to pay an additional ammount on top of what I already pay. If Sky have lost the rights what about reducing my monthly ammount now then?
Daylight robbery. cool
the problem you got is people love while players are payed massive wages and the premier league get away with selling tv coverage to the highest bidder then sky will be expensive.
Sky knows that most of its sports packages sell because if its prem football and without it people will not pay.
Setanta have seen this and decided to go for it with money behind them from the US espn network.
The Fa can only sell england home matches and away ones are up for bidding from the countries the games are played in.
Setanta also have the rights to the fa cup this year and will continue to increase the amount of games it shows.
The bbc,itv,c4,c5 were asked to bid on the england away payed over 1 million for the matches and asked around 250,000 for the highlights of the bidders matched this so no one got the highlights late today setanta are still talking to channels so you can see the highlights.
As for what setanta amount of live sport they show (this includes all american sport, baseball, ice hockey american footbal etc) is cheaper than sky.
Also when setanta have a ppv boxing event they give away 3 months viewing of all its channels when you buy the does not do that.
I recently have been pissed off with tv because dorna (moto gp governing body) have made the bbc exclusive rights holders to all moto gp races when eurosport have been doing a better job for years.
Not being funny but the people at eurosport are ex racers or have been in the business for years not a babe who talks shite and a touring car crap driver.
Anyway, Until tv companys stop paying silly amounts of money for football you wont get live matches on the bbc or euro and world cup.

So true.
Eurosport is brilliant on its coverage on Moto GP. The BBC will not have a clue.
Its like World superbikes where Jamie Whitham was doing the coverage. He now does British superbikes instead, cannot understand that one. The new guy on world superbikes sounds awful.
Setanta of course will give away free packages for now, but when it has enough viewers paying the dosh, they will be like all the others, and give you nothing back. You mark my words. lol
We don't pay for anything other than a TV licence.
I refuse to because I think its a rip off plus the fact we rarely watch TV

I am often on the couch but usually using my laptop
also if you got a good broadband connection you can watch any live sport free of charge on the internet.
Many sites have links to the broadcasters you need is the free player which excepts the links.
Even the england game tonight is listed.

okay... I have been trying to work out how to answer this without a) sounding smug.... and b) keeping on sort of the right side of the law.....
okay... I haven't paid for a sky ppv (boxing or westling) in about 2 years........
how do i watch them..... on a computer....
if you do some research out there there are "sites" out there that give you the chance to watch stuff without paying..... for example, 3pm premier league kick offs on a saturday afternoon
if you are really perplexed..... send me a pm and i'll explain......

Nah, thats on the coffee table :giggle:
I find the whole business of the greed and the wealth of some of these sat channels, professional sports people and sporting bodies distasteful. Good riddance to them. I would much rather watch a local amateur side (whether it be rugby, football, cricket or what ever) than pay a penny to these greedy gits.
Wouldn't it be nice to see some amateur sport on the box. ITV and BBC could start a new trend. Turn their backs on these overpaid elites and start showing the amateur leagues. I'm sure it would be just as good to watch.

That might be a good idea as at least then they will bid on it, because as it stands they cant afford to bid on any decent sport now.
I dont have a problem paying extra for Sky, as that is my choice to do. What I object too is paying the 45 quid and up until recently having all the US golf and the footie. Now they have had that taken away but I am still paying the same money, but for less of what I want to watch.
Watching amateur is all well and good, but what sports are you talking about? Football is dire at amateur level compared to the big boys. I cannot say about rugby or cricket as that bores the pants off me to be honest.
I want to watch the best sportsmen and women, at the top of their fields, I dont really want to watch people who are amateurs as that surely means they are not good enough to go pro? So we would be watching second rate sport. Ah the BBC should bid on it then, as most of their programmes are amateur anyway. lol
