Following on from the other religion thread........
Is it just my thoughts or does anyone else think religion was invented just to pass the buck?
How often do we hear "its Gods way" ? or
"Its the way God intended it"
What I want to know is....Just who is this invisible being whos responsible for most of the worlds troubles and why dont he/she/it get of its arse and sort out the whole god damn mess??????
amen to that Heln lol
Myself i'm not an atheist, i'm a realist, i believe in what i can see..
And i see a lot more scientific facts point towards everything on this planet evolved rather than created
But, i wouldn't say no he don't exist or was invented as i don't have any prove he don't.
I believe we all need to believe in something.. if not God then something else smile
Tony wink
The whole thing reminds me of the old joke about the religious man who climbed up onto his roof when a flood hit, praying for God to save him. A boat came by, and he waved them off: "Save someone else, God will save me." A helicopter came by; same thing. The flood waters rose higher, and he drowned. Finally face-to-face with God, he demanded, "Why didn't you save me when I prayed?" God sighed. "I sent a boat, I sent a helicopter..."

Theres a word for people like you-
Agnostic
Oh, and deviant lol
I really don`t get religion. A while ago I had some godly types (I say that because I don`t know what religion they were from) knocking my door at 9am on a sat morning with their kids in tow I might add, trying to tell me that "god has the answers". The answers to what I didn`t ask him any questions rolleyes ??.
They went on and on and on about how got had to answers to the questions we were all asking such as why did the Tsunami happen? and why did the floods in the summer happen?. I just don`t understand how they can believe that someone who we don`t even know excists would have the answers to this.
I would never slate anyone for their beliefs as long as they keep them to there selves and don`t come knocking my door preaching to me.
And while im on the subject of religion why would anyone belive that having a blood transfusion would make god turn his back on you. In the news yesterday a young woman in her 20s died after having her baby twins because she believed that god would turn his back on her for accepting someone elses blood!!. Upshot two newborn babies left without a mother how can that be "gods way"?. I don`t understand dunno And breathe.........
Sorry for ranting redface
I am methodist but dont actively follow it only times i get to church is christenings weddings and funerals so i guess pretty much like most people one thing when we were little though we was made to go to sunday school we all used to detest it (sure my mother just wanted 3 kids outta her hair for a couple hours) rolleyes
My son is christened but only because its frowned upon not to be in our family but thats a whole different ball game i will never force my son to beleive any religion over another all i can do is teach him the difference so when he is old enough he can make his own choise
btw does anyone else hide from the jahovis (sp) dorr knocking witnesses or is it just me :giggle:
what i want to know is, if there are any johovas (or however its spelt lol) witnesses on the site maybe you can help lol in Your bible its says all johovas witnesses have a place in heaven and there are 45,000 places, now theres estimated over 5 million jovos at the moment so when this dooms day comes you bible talks about wheres the rest of you going dunno and if theres only 45,000 of you when the world ends why did the other 4 million odd turn their backs on the religion!!
I dont think that it was invented to pass the buck as such. Although it may be used like that sometimes. I think it was invented as a people's code of conduct. A guide to living.

i have had alot of religious education over the years and have been lucky enough to lean much about different cultures/practices/belief systems.I have also studied science, history and the internet, giving me an insight into more scientific/proof-based ideologies.
it is a subject i could debate or hours.
Strangely i have become , more or less , an agnostic because it is nearly impossible to come to a firm, evidenced based theory as to how life as we know it came about and whether god features in it.
to me, those with a "spiritual connection" or "(blind)accepting firm faith" certainly have something i and many others do not and it doesnt necessarily make them happy or give them peace.
i like Henenheavens questions "What I want to know is....Just who is this invisible being whos responsible for most of the worlds troubles and why dont he/she/it get of its arse and sort out the whole god damn mess??????"
and would answer them in this way: whilst trying to remain respectful.
Apparently theres a "Creator" who is a "force" rather like a "spirit" but "He" is the most powerful one out there and can see and has known this mess was going to happen."He" is watching everything that goes on and can read into all our hearts and minds....
the short answer is that religion teaches that the world is gonna destroy itself butif youve been good youre gonna get a second that is right god is just watchin and letting it all go on, waiting until the shit has really hit the fan then save some of our sorry asses.
Some religions believe that this is the case despite a Messiah having come along once already (Christians)
Jews believe that the Messiah hasnt been yet but is on his way,and the truly holy will be saved .
Islam believes that this shit wouldnt happen if we all followed Islam.
sounds kind of sick huh?
Far too serious - If I know the point at which i'm going to expire I'm going to pray like the pope on sp*ed!
Jehova! Jehova! Jehova!
Sorry, went a bit Monty Python for a moment redface
I want to know what he's done wrong to need all these witnesses anyway dunno
I just say, "I'm not interested, thank you" and, up to now, they have always just said "thank you" and moved on.

If I am in a divilish mood, I will face them head on... they tend to give up before I do!
I usually start off by telling them that I believe that 'god' is a spaceman and take it from there...
I will never, ever knock another person's beliefs as we are all entitled to our views. I understand too, that there is a need to "spread the word" if you are of a religious persuasion but what I do not agree with is when "door to door" selling of religion is used as a vehicle. I also find the utilisation of children in these campaigns in bad taste.
Me? I am an agnostic. I would like to think that there was something or someone out there but to paraphrase Deecee, I cannot "because it is nearly impossible to come to a firm, evidenced based theory as to how life as we know it came about and whether a god features in it."
Add to that the very many unanswered questions that I have in terms of "Why did "god" let this happen?" I find that it gets harder and harder to have any kind of faith at all.
The last ones who knocked on my door ( son got there before i said hide its the bogey monster bolt ) talked for half an hour after i said i wasnt interested, tea was burning etc etc (god am evil) and had very young children with them which i didnt really agree with but as varca said they do have their religion i just dont follow the same one
I've read something similar in the forums before, and I remember a phrase that sums me up completely.
"I am not a sheep, nor do I need a sheperd to guide me". Couldn't agree more. IMO, and some education, most religions were created as a system of law - a way of the strong controlling the weak and the intelligent dominating the stupid. I don't think much has changed.

OK simply put .....
Only 144,000 humans end up in heaven, and they are the selected few, picked to rule with Jesus after Armageddon.
The rest of the minions (which doesn't necessarily mean solely witnesses), if they survive through Armageddon, live on earth which will eventually be restored to the paradise it was supposed to be.
I don't mind them knocking on my door they are very funny but tend to go when you ask if they give head....... rolleyes

May I ask why the figure of 144,000 is so precise please?
:dunno: it's just the figure that is in Revelation! How that figure was derived I have no idea!

I had the whole 'christening thing' from family when I became pregnant for the 1st time. There was a right 'hoo haa' when I said no child of mine would go through such a ceremony and that, when he/she was old enough to understand they could do whatever they choose. No one actually 'fell out' with me and one or two said they respected my views. Personally speaking, I cant understand why anyone would take a child of a few months old to get water poured over it without fully understanding why. I sometimes think its an excuse for a family 'bunfight'.
I was brought up C of E and went to Sunday School every week. I even came top in R E exams at school. When I was younger I loved listening to stories etc and used to think of it more as a History lesson. I really enjoyed R E, probably because I enjoyed History and thats how I thought of it.
As I have become older and perhaps a little cynical, I just think, and this is my personal opinion, that its a load of old 'codswallap'.
I think with some people its a way of seeing some hope for what goes on around them and the world with all its troubles. If that gets them through the bad times then, for them, it cant be a bad thing. I have to respect anyone for having their own thoughts and opinions even though they may not be mine.
I dont see the 'creation' thing, I believe in evoloution but having said that, where did all that begin??? It had to start somewhere.
As for the 'religious sales people' knocking on doors. I believe that religion, or the lack of it, is a personal thing and having Jehovah's Witnesses in family, Ive had some pretty heated debates on the whole thing.
They believe that what they have found is so exciting and wonderful that they need to spread the 'truth' to the whole world and believe me they truly believe in what they preach and live their lives by it.
The 'blood' issue as far as they are concerned, blood is the very soul and the reason they wont have transfusions is because they dont want their 'pure' souls contaminated by the blood of, and this is how it was relayed to me, by the blood of murders, rapists, thieves , even though I respect the way of life they choose to live, I for one could not sit on my backside and watch a member of my family die through the lack of a transfusion. I guess my respect for their beliefs has to end somewhere.
I really cant get my head around the whole religion 'thing'. Its great to stand up for personal beliefs but when I see all the suffering going on in the world in the name of whatever God some people worship, then it makes me wonder, what sort of a God would allow that.
I have lots of questions that will never be answered and even if someone could come up with anything close, unless I actually see this God for myself with my own eyes, I will always be a sceptic.
Thanks to all who have posted in this thread, its good to get others views.
In words of the late, great Dave Allen......
'May YOUR God go with you. wink

At the time i had my child i was to young to argue about what i should or should not to partly because i was raised not to join in with conversations/debates i now no if i did have another child i would speak out and just say no its just something that costs money in my view, i beleive it has done him no good and he should of had the chance to choose. But family being family basically if he wasnt christened we were outcasts (more then we already were)
I to did RE in gcse and used to think of it as history.
Didn't you just love reports of David Beckham saying, “I definitely want Brooklyn to be christened, but I don't know into what religion yet.”?
