D'ya know!!! I was thinking the exact same thing Whips smile
I use limewirepro and there's an option to select a particular genre of music so I tend to download lots of tracks and have a listen. If I like the tracks I'll listen to more from that band and then buy cds from there. Music mags like Kerrang are excellent for finding out about new bands
The only radio I listen to is Nation FM which plays all rock/indie/alternative etc and tv channels like Scuzz plays some good gothy stuff too. Most of the bands I listed are fairly recent ( as in the last 10 years or so ) though Dave Matthews I did find through listening to Blue Man Group as he sang a track as a guest artist.
Last FM is a great site - you say which artists or genres you like and then it creates your own personal radio station for you.
Recommendations from other people are always good. I also have a tendency to buy CDs that I like the cover art of - that has thrown up some gems. (I do the same with books too - Paul Auster, a genius discovery!) Oh and if you have iTunes then the free single of the week can always be a good way of getting to hear new artists.
Sassy, be careful of Limewire - it killed my last laptop.
Thanks for the warning Nola. I tend to just look up the artists on limewire and search youtube to listen to the stuff these days. Then I use Piolet to download ( no genre search on that one sadly )

For me I've started listening to internet radio stations, where there is far less commercial pressure to play a limited range of predictable bands...
Also, sometimes, you read interviews by your favourite artists and they might refer to some other band or artist... which leads you to investigate etc.
Or plain old radio sometimes... there's still the odd song that comes through that's different and appealing. My only trouble is remembering them long enough to investigate!
I'd definitely recommend internet radio though. They tend to specialise in certain types of music, but also tend to have a very wide range of bands playing similar music... so a good way to get 'more' of what you're into.. if that makes sense.
Like i said on the original thread RO posted, i don't do much 'new music' as i have about 2000 CD's upstairs, so it can take quite a while for a second listen of some of them. I'm more into film these days but things do pop up there that make me hunt out the performer. I also watch quite a few music vids, but mainly cos i'm more interested in the video and it's director, but again this can throw up some suprises. I've also seen a few things on TV, the most prominent of these being Seasick Steve
When i did have a more active interest in music it was back when there were actual shops that sold it without the letters H,M and V outside. I used to frequent one independant shop and got quite friendly with the guys who worked there 9as it almost became a second home redface ) so they used to keep all the tasty new releases for me to look at before anyone else got a chance to nab em, hence my rather fine collection of picture discs, special editions, box sets and general 'stuff' which is stashed away upstairs. They also had a box which was full of special offers and discs that were over ordered which cost 50p or £1 which led to a few interesting discoveries.
Then there were the gigs. at one point i was going to 2-3 per week with a peak of 5 one week, so with support bands and having the late night 'Indie' show on the radio coming haome i was sort of immersed in it all for quite a while.
In fact, typing all this i'm trying to work out how i spent so many hours in the pub and fiddling with my car!!!
