I have a choice.....sit on my arse at home or walk the 15mins to the school to pick my son up....like i said it makes me feel better to do the school walk....what if something happened to him just for the sake of not being bothered to get off my arse,i could never live with myself.....when our eldest started secondary school he wanted to go to school by himself.....i can tell you we were nervous about that....but had to let him do it!

Tough call isn`t it? My son is not yet at High school, but he`s been asking for the past year when I`m going to allow him to do the walk by himself. I`ve only just felt confident enough to let him, much to his relief! If anything ever happened to him, it wouldn`t be my fault, or his, but the fault of the sicko who harmed him. He SHOULD be safe.
It doesn`t bear thinking about sad

You can't help but worry he's 15 now and even when he's late i still worry....it's just natural.......my main concern though is gangs of kids roaming the streets picking on lone children...
And you`ll still be worrying when he`s 25! That`s what makes us good parents, the fact that we care. Aside from the boy, we have two teenaged girls, one nearly 17, the other nearly 14. I swear to god it`s their sole purpose in life to make us completely grey by the time we are forty! lol

Just out of interest Tania, which country are you from? I'm sure you've probably told us but I can't remember.

Hmm, shall I tell you or shall I taunt you? I think I will taunt you and let you run a poll to guess my provenance! biggrin
When I was young a psycho murdered a little girl by drowning her in his hotel sink. It must have been all over the news but those days we did not have TV and even if we did have TV the news wouldn't have been as graphic as today. I recall the adults discussing the case and warning me not to trust strangers. They told me there are some 'bad people' who talk to children and offer them sweets and then steal them away from their families. One episode had thrown the entire country in fear and despair. What scared me the most was hearing the police used a doll for the man to show them how he killed the little girl. I recall for quite a while being afraid of dolls thinking they were the dead kid.
However, there are a lot more cases of children being molested at home - far too many for comfort! There was a case of a girl who gave birth to a fish child and the whole nation was appalled to find out she had been used by all men in the family: father, brother and uncle. About a year or so later, she fell pregnant again... again it was the same perpetrators. Go figure it! rolleyes

And we will still love them....no matter what they do to us!

After your comment about the homeless and beggars, I was just wondering if your country of origin was on the same planet I live on?
Oh I don't know about the planet you live in, Scandal! lol
There are no homeless in my country, thank God. There are lots of beggars but they are professional beggars. They work regular hours and do not litter the streets with beer cans and liquor bottles - simply because they have more sense than to waste money on alcohol.
Oh and by the way, in my country, we do punish children when they misbehave and we don't say 'will you please be quiet... please stop making that noise...can you please put this back on the shelf'. We just say 'be quiet! shut up!...put it back!' There is no doubt who is in charge.
I thought you were American Tania, now I`m guessing Canada?

Where did that come from?! dunno
Can`t speak for all parents in my country, but I try polite, and drop the `pleases` if they push it. There is no doubt that manners are expected to be extended and reciporated in my house.

This thread is getting more and more surreal rolleyes
I'm off for a bath, then headed out to buy a bottle or two of the very strong stuff.
Maybe it'll all make perfect sense when I return.

Ah, ok. Well you might like to think about how things sound before you type them, because that really came across as a criticism and a broad brush observation on how we raise our kids in this country. :)
I rankled

I am not complaining. I am making social comparisons. Anyway all foreigners think their country is best. Even expat Brits in my country! lol

Interesting word rankle. I had to look it up. Sorry you feel this way Venus. I did not mean to offend and I did say earlier on this is not a criticism, just a debate.
Well Tania...would you like to tell us what country you come from.....i mean a country without homeless people and even the beggars pay taxes.....

It`s ok, I don`t rankle easily! wink Cept we weren`t debating different approaches to disapline, so as it came out of nowhere, your example seemed to suggest that our approach (if there is such a thing) left doubt of who was in charge, and it came across as an accusation. It brought the patriot out in me......as well as the mum! lol

There are homeless people and we have God (who he dunno ) to thank for that.
If you know that the beggars are professionals and that they work regular hours ,how come they still get handouts then??

There is nothing what so ever wrong with being poliet when addressing children (or adults for that matter) and it certainly does not bring into question who is in charge!

There is no crime where I live. Most people live at the end of the street, in flats. The elementary school is at the other end. Only one quiet road to walk along for them with sufficient pavement space. No people hanging around trying to push drugs, no weirdos staring at kids. No animals running amuck. No unexploded bombs left over by the war.
When I was young, back home, I had to content with stray dogs, some of them very ferrocious, a mentally retarded man who used to expose himself, curse and harrass people (he never harrassed me because I was kind to him and never yelled, ridiculed or threw stones at him. He actually protected me when he saw strange people talking to me, coming and asking if I needed help.) If you chose the short cut there was always the risk of mines left over from the war but I had been taught to stay on the trodden path and not mess up with iron objects in the ground.
Yes, times have changed and not all neighbourhoods are as safe as my current one. So why don't parents get together and organise a school bus to pick their kids up? It costs less than having to drive them yourself and it is kinder to the environment. I have never seen a school bus in this country!

Is it just me or is that one of the strangest posts for some time??  confused :? :? :?
It's not just you Sarge

Thought just came to me .... I was always taught ...to earn respect you have to show respect. What's wrong with showing respect and good manners to children .. after all they learn by example.

Yup
We teach like that now, too. I have the respect of all but two of my pupils because I have shown them the same respect. The other two are spoilt children and get away with telling teachers (and any other adult, including their parents) to 'fuck off'.
Edited to say that both these children have been excluded from school because I won't tolerate them speaking to me in that way.
Tania
Please tell me more about your upbringing. This has amused, amazed and enthralled me!! confused :? :? :? :? :? wink

Before reading the latest comments, I was meaning to post to say that most of the knowledge/idea I have about English families comes from what I see on reality TV. I have a few friends over here but none of them has kids and they lead non traditional lives. However, having read the latest posts that are rife with sarcasm I don't think I will bother.
