what do you guys think of so called social media, like facebook, twitter etc?
i think that the availability of cyber"imaginary" friends may fulfill some basic desire for acceptance, but in reality stops people going out to find real triends, which is obviously more difficult
I use twitter very effectively as a networking tool for work - I've made heaps of contacts, gone to conferences, learned new skills etc as a result.
Facebook has been a great way of linking up with former colleagues and friends from the US, old uni pals etc.
I think they are all useful if you use them to suit you.

Pretty much spot on, there's no right way to use SM.
I'm on Twitter all day and i'm picking up loads of new ideas, skills and contacts for work.

They are not an alternative to a real life. I use facebook, got bored with Twitter and use SH too. I also use Googlemail and have a phone. I use any and all tocommunicate with the wide range of friends I am lucky to call mine. Most of my friends on FB are friends in real life first. SH and FB are a place to go to chat, get information, share thoughts/hopes/annoyances. Just like the pub is, or even work is. The internet is an additional place for communication - not a replacement.
Having friends on the web does not ever stop people going out and having real-life interactions. If people don't go out and interact they have chosen that. This could be a sign of depression, and should probably be considered as a reason to have a think about one's life. But, no, this idea that it "stops people going out to find real triends" is (forgive the bluntness) nonsense.
I also thing SH has an advantage over FB in that is exposes us all to people we might never get to chat/forum with in FB or even real life.
I dont find new friends through other social networking sites, they all taste of vanilla :rascal:
I dont talk to my local friends on the internet, I simply keep in contact with people I know all over the world.
I do laugh at some of the stuff people post on face book / twitter though.
If they came round to my house, rang my doorbell and when I answered just came out with that mundane crap, I would have to punch them hard in the face
what about picking up the phone and calling someone?
social net working or what ever you call it means that peeple just sit and type to a person.
i know peeple who work in pubs and peeple sit there all night chatting to mates on FB fgs. why do they not meet you down the pub and chat fact to face. no wonder peeples social skills are no longer there as they once was.:notes:
one reeson why pubs are empty now as peeple just chat on the FB or twitter things. it must be just me who hates them both.

But using Sh is ok?
Another reason pubs are empty is they charge £2 for 50p worth of cola.

Thinks - - - - nope. :giggle:
As the driver I end up drinking cola (which I don't particularly like) lemonade which is worse or J2O and the like which are just sugar syrup in a glass. And all extortionately priced as compared with the beer, which at about a pint just feels more reasonable - at least some effort has gone into the brewing. Cola is just water with chemicals mixed in.
I'd rather meet people at their or my home for a natter, cake, coffee and a good film.
Actually, thinking about it I see people at quite a few different places and very few are pubs.
Clearly not a pub person. LOL (shuts up as clearly not in the pub demographic.)
Personally I think, as with some many things, it's all about using things in moderation.

I don`t use any of them, we use chat on here occasionally and we use msn to chat to eachother depending where BMW is, apart from that we like to go out and socialise if we can

Bit difficult when most of the people on my FB or Twitter are spread all over the globe rolleyes
not on twitter yet !! But do love facebook. Love seeing other peoples pictures, of their holidays or days out etc....like posting mine and haveing a laugh and some banter with freinds. It is what you make it ! Simple, harmless fun....
I dont use twitter never even been on the web page. I have a beebo page I log into about once a year and is out of date by about 3 years. I have Facebook I sign into every other day ish. Its good to keep up with people on facebook, I attend the odd event school friends post but mostly its just full of crap. My News feed is mostly one of my nieces moaning about her whole life daily. People I went to school with but dont actually chat too having thier domestics online. A friend of Mrs Tweekys family who posts any inane dribble! Things like, my kids are ill today, I just baked a cake, Ohh God work again!, Im happy its Saturday blah blah blah. All of this is normally followed by 5-10 comments of the same inane dribble by the rest of her family. The funniest thing I read of late was from two of Mrs Tweekys friends kids. They were talking about a boy girl school situation and one replied to the other "I'll talk to you about it when I see you" They live in the same fucking house lol
