It's so very difficult for a newbie to break into any established group

I know what you mean, but believe me, this is the easiest-to-break-into group you could possibly imagine! Everyone was a newbie once, and everyone knows how scary it is, so people make a big effort to look after newbies and make them feel comfortable and welcome.
Besides which, the very nature of the group means that it's in everyone's best interests to be welcoming to new people, because without newbies joining all the time, the 'established' group would run out of new people to meet, chat to, and potentially play with! So everyone is very welcoming to newbies.
My main tip would be to make the first move to start a conversation, even if it's scary - say hello to the person standing next to you, tell them you're new, ask them about socials they've been to before, get chatting. And keep doing it, it gets easier with every friendly response!
Welcome to the forums, by the way, A+D smile wave

What is a Handholder - someone to hold my hand?

redface surprisedops:
Some one who greets their newbie wearing only a towel

And that newbie is now one of the first to put his name down for any munch he see's (probably hoping for a repeat greeting) wink
Having had the amazing opportunity to go to a swingers club a few weeks ago I'm sure I would still be nervous going to a social, but nothing could beat how nervous I felt that night (even though I wasn't alone). Two double G&T's in about 5 minutes helped us in the door!
I'd be curious and keen to go to a munch though - I'll have to keep an eye out for some in the London/ SE area

i hope the badges don't have pins in them, if so have they been risk assessed?
if not i hope theyre clipies they can have some fun uses :evil2:

Badges redface Yup they have pins alright. I am not a nervous person, during the lead up to our first event Bristol munch 1 I was quite relaxed. Myself Mrs Tweeky and our handholders for the night arrived and I was last in line for saying hi to the host and getting my badge. A simple task you would think, say hi and thanks get badge proceed to bar. Everyone else managed rather well but would my fooking badge fasten would it hell. For some odd reason this one little thing going wrong made me suddenly aware of where I was and that the room was full of people. Mrs Tweeky and the handholders had now vamooshed to the bar so I am all on my own fiddling with the badge. Minx then offers to help with it but cant seem to get it fastened either sad another lady who appeared from I dont know where eventually got it on by which time I think I had turned into a beetroot. IT felt like someone shoud have just got on the mic and announced "this mans come to a munch and he cant fasten his badge". I wouldent say its effected me now the fact that I check my badge every 5 seconds whilst at munchs is purely coincidental.
At Bristol 2 it was Mrs Tweeky who got the non fastening badge  Remembering what had happened to me at the first one I was of course the perfect person to help so I pointed her in the direction of the hosts and went to find the bar
Can't say I've ever really felt that nervous before a munch - maybe a feeling of anticipation but it is a positive feeling. Still they do say no sense - no feeling!
As for the badges. I think the use of name badges is practically universal at munches - because they are held in a closed venue - they're not open to the public. It's great fun meeting people like that - as long as the print is large enough - me eyes are not what they were redface .
Socials tend not to be held in private venues, although some are, and I guess whether name badges are offered is at the discretion of the organiser and may well depend on the type of venue.
Not forgetting of course the discreet SH pin badges that are available for generic identification- usually on sale at munches.
