OK.... Went and brought some more memory for the kids puter this morning, opened said puter and put memory stick in....
Turned it on...................... sad
It powers up, monitor remains black although the power light is on, and the base unit just emits a very long beep....
I turned it off, and removed the memory stick, closed it up and turned it on again......
Grrrrrrrrrr mad same again..........
So what have I done wrong???
Thanks in advance.

I had the same prob all i done was checked each leads(anything i could touch) in side pc and give them a push turned it back on and every thing was ok
thabk god i am here to help!
i am brill at dealing with broken computers... they always get fixed by my method.
step 1) realise its broken
2) scratch your head
3)stamp feet in frustration.
4)call computer expert
5) await computer expert
6) smile at how quickly you dealt with it.
hope this helps! lol
seriously though... dont know if this is relevant, but when tonguey put more memory in mine, he said something about there being two diff types of memory you can use, either will be fine, but its not possible to mix them.

No, it won't be a lead problem, the POST (Power On Self Test) sequence starts off with CPU test, Memory Test, Video card test, then the monitor should spring into life, then after that the hard drives, cd/dvd drives and floppies are tested, except for if the cable is on the wrong way round, but that wouldn't normally cause a beep.
My suggestion would be to remove both memory sticks, use a pencil eraser along the contact edge of the DIMM (memory stick) to clean it and place it back making sure the notches are the correct way around, most likely thing here is that the memory is not in quite right.

shireen,
according to and a single beep usually means a memory failure, but it's usually a short one? the single really long beep doesn't match anything standard as far as i can tell? dunno
can't think of anything other than chris has suggested? doesn't really help that does it? confused
n x x x ;)

Thank soooooooooooooooooo much Chris kiss
The contact edges did look a little "bronzed" and cleaned up nicely with an earser biggrin
Whether I hadn't got it back in right I dont know as I normally kick it to make sure wink but I tested it with just the original stick and it worked. Feeling brave I tried it with the other stick and that worked too :D
Thanks again everyone for their suggestions except Scandal who is neither use nor ornament lol

Happy to help, the only thing is, just as Dawn said mods are at munches to have a good time, I'm not there as a pc workshop
Have fun
Chris
You probably hadn't pushed it far enough in and moved the other stick at the same time.
The trick with memory is to try and push both ends down at the same time without flexing the motherboard too much (or at all).
A thumb at one end and a finger at the other does the trick and for memory - whatever works

Makes note to push it all the way in next time wink
I think thats what it was tbh, but I normally push them really hard to make sure that they click into place.... redface surprisedops:
