Nola I do feel for you. I used to suffer from the mother of all bad periods which ended in my having my hysterectomy a few months back. Go and see your GP babes. He may be able to prescribe stronger Brufen ( I was on 600mg at one time ) though Mefanamic Acid is much better as in most cases it can help reduce the flow too. A hot water bottle was a Godsend for me too when the pain was really bad or you may benefit from trying a TENS machine. Not sure if you can get one through your GP but they're not too expensive to buy. Good luck hunni
Hi Nola, Sassy is right about the Mefaniamic Acid - some peeps call it Ponstan. You take it a for a couple of days before your period is due and it helps EMORMOUSLY with the pain - trust me, i used to be on all 4s and barking like a dog when i had a period and not in a good way. Ponstan is only good if u have regular periods. Personally, i recommend going on the combi pill. I resisted for years but when i finally went on it i LOVED it. Very little pain, u control when u have a period and the period is much lighter. If you want pain relief now, the most effective way i found to pain manage was to take take seperate aspiring and paracetomol every 4 hours, but 2 hours apart, so i was always getting some pain relief from one source or another. Like sassy said, talk to your GP but hopefully these ideas will help in the meantime. Hope you feel better soon, xxx

Hiya re pain relief for bad periods....I had severe periods lasting 15 days and flooding so badly that I was using two towels plus two super tampax ..at the same time ..I eventually got checked out by the doctor having been put on a course of Mefanamic acid which worked to begin with but then having the recommended break then going back on it for the second course I found somewhere along the line I had become allergic to it....so the next course of action was to have a coil fitted....AHHHHHH utter bliss not only did I after a very long spell regain my sex drive but the pain at long last diminished to a very bearable level, now all I get is the odd "show" like we did when we first got them at 11, and mild abdominal pain which if required an ibuprofen takes care of. I certainly sympathise with those of you who are going through what I did and highly recommend you visit your doctor it worked for me.
personally I wouldnt recomend the coil, I know everyone has different reactions but the pain I had used to make me pass out with it and only had it in for a week, I would recomend Mefanamic though I thought it was ace!! until I went on the pill and now im much better,,thank god Good luck hun xxxxxx
Trixie is right about Mefanamic working better if you have regular periods as you can start to take them a few days before you're due. That's why it didn't work so well for me though as my periods were very irregular. I'd have one for 2 weeks but then another 2 weeks later then nothing for 3 weeks then one that lasted 10 days etc etc. never iknew where I was with mine but when they did come, boy did I know about it! My hysterectomy was the last resort. For over 6 years I'd had scans for fibroids and cysts, tests for endometreitis, tried Tranexamic and Mefanamic Acid, very strong Ibruprofen, the Mirena coil ( removed because I bled constantly for 3 months and the pain was worse ) The only options left for me were Uterine Ablation ( no good for me as my Mum still suffers from thickening of the womb lining and doc couldn't rule out it being hereditory ) or the big op. Have to say despite a couple of slight setbacks including finding a benign tumour in the biopsy, it's the best thing that happened to me.
I thought the concept of Depo was great until my sister had it and ballooned by several stone in a matter of months. As well as having her moods go haywire. Worse was, even though she realised it was happening, she could't undo the shot. At least with other methods you can stop them if they're not agreeing with you! Chocolate and lots of sympathy's all I can offer

I made ther HUGE mistake of having a depo shot in Feb 07 ... just the one. Yes it sorted the periods (I didn't have one for 6 months) but I gained 5st ... which I haven't addressed yet so I have that task ahead come Jan. I also had terrible mood swings and zero libido (maybe that's why it's hailed as such a good contraception - you don't shag!!) Some people find it suits them and it's the bee's knees but the problem is that once it's in - it's in! And until it's worn off (as I said, 6 months for one shot in my case) you have to live with the side effects.
Nola, I really do feel for you and can only add to what the others have said. I tried virtually everything out there to stop the pain and the irregular bleeding, and as with Sassy, ended up going down the Hysterectomy route (best thing I have ever done but a bit drastic just to stop the periods. It turned out the periods in my case were also a symptom of something else going on, so the hysto was the only option). The only thing that did work for me was the depo but after a couple of shots, the effectiveness did wear off. But as the others have said, we are all so different and what works for one, wont for another. Ibrufen, hotwater bottle and long, hot baths helped me, plus the odd glass of wine.

I could have written this ... Tranexamic & Mefanamic Acid didn't touch me, ibuprofen and paracetamol were less effective, hot water bottles were permanently on hand and I had all the tests, I did have the Ablation bu they found my uterus was too large for it to work effectively (although they never told me that until after I'd had my period). I had the hysterectomy this year after almost 8 years of problems and 5 years of begging for the op. I cannot tell you how much I have my life back Nola, you have my sympathies, the mirena might be a good option for you. Callie
i went on the mini pill cus i got so much pain and awful periods, flooding etc and every few weeks having a period ..... mini pill is brilliant.... rarely have a period now
i find chocolate and a wheat bag is a good general cure all but i can highly reccomend the mirena coil! pain, what pain?? well for me anyway hth koo xx
From what I can gather, you'll go either one way or the other with a coil. Either your problems will all be solved, or they'll just get much worse I tried all kinds of things, from taking paracetamol every four hours with ibuprofen 2 hours later, to Noresthisterone (something like that anyway) from the doc but that didn't touch it, to Tranexamic acid and Mefanamic acid. The latter two did help a bit, but not enough to really make a massive difference, and the only cure for me was a hysterectomy - obviously not an option for you at the moment, but I feel like a new woman since I had that done. Apparently, women are meant to follow in their mother's footsteps when it comes to periods, so if she has an early menopause you're likely to as well. If that's true I'm bloody glad I did, my mum's 58 in a couple of months and showing no signs of them stopping :shock: :shock:

If I have to listen to my mother telling me once more that she suffered no problems with her periods and wizzed through menopause without a hitch once more I'm getting myself adopted :dry:
Mefenamic acid is one of the option that was mentioned earlier, but if you really want to get it better than combined oral contraceptive pill would be the good option to try make the period lighter and less painfull.
I suffered as you did until a scan for something else showed I had polyps (on the uterus? Not sure, but somewhere around there) Anyway I had a polypectomy and I have been virtually pain-free since then.
