anyone remember that programme??
How odd was their prediction for the year 1999....weve seen it come and go, and are even 10 years on......and we still cant shape shift , and we dont wear beige lycra....well I dont anyway!!
And the recent ads by some company about green electricity or some such nonesense.......using 70's footage of what they thought the future would be like.....makes me smile when I see it......some of the predictions were so way out lol
In some ways, the world and its technologies are evolving so quickly and coming on in leaps and bounds.......yet we still dont have hover/flying cars, which was a staple of futuristic themed films and tv programmes
we arent all wearing skin tight teflon/lycra mix jumpsuits, all in the same style and colour ( heaven forbid that in my case....MOST unflattering :lolsmile
there arent people living in underground sewers because society has broken down due to robots/villains overcoming the major towns and cities.
we dont live on the moon and battle aliens as part of our daily routine
I wonder how they came up with these ideas, and what ideas people will have for our futures........
what are your fond memories of imagining the future?
I always wanted to find ET in my shed
I read a book about nostradamus in 1977 that partially convinced me that the millennium would bring on an apocalypse.
George Orwell was about 30 years too early in 1984.
I still think back fondly to the Jetsons I used to drool over the prospect of being taken to school in a private flying saucer.
I used to LOVE that programme when i was little but yeah it is a bit out in its predictions.
There are flying cars though, the first one was made and used this year IIRC (still a bit late for 1999 tho)
I find star trek and its spin offs to be much more practical, the technology part of it is really well researched, they have a scientific research team that work behind the scenes, and there are regularly real life breakthroughs that mirror the series such as the matter transport success 2 years ago (albeit only a minor ammount with massive power needs, but thats how things start)
Ok the aliens and things are all currently figments of the imagination needed to perpetuate the series.
A lot of inventions seem to mirror fantasy / sci-fi programs and games. Anyone remember cyberpunk or steve austin? think now about all the implants people have to enhance certain bodily functions. Battletech? myomer fibres and gyroscopes are a functional reality.
One thing I do believe is that the future hold some exciting possibilites, where theres a will theres a way or so they say
Raymond Baxter!
'nuff said. ;-)

Let me finish, They all had crystals in their hands, to ID them, open lock ect.
Today we can implant a chip. It has been done by a Open University professor. He walks around the building with doors opening before him. Think no more bit of plastic. Just a chip below the skin and pin, to open lock, pay bills and so much more.
We have already done this for our pets, to get them home safe. It is now completely possible to copy what was depicted in Logan's Run. Using a chip not a crystal.
It is not technology that holds us back, but what we are willing to do with it.

And when you get mugged - they whip your hand off and go and access the autobank with it. Might raise a few eye-brows in Asda though.

Nothing dates as quickly as sci-fi.
the film 2010 looks less futuristic than 2001.

the new Star Trek is pretty blasted super though.
(I was rather taken by the 'believability' of "aerobreaking" in 2010)
