Most pedestrians killed in accidents are not killed by drivers exceeding the speed limit.
In 2003, 33% of pedestrians killed (sample size 256 deaths) had blood alcohol levels exceeding 100mg/100mL.
People don't need speeding drivers to kill them, they do quite well in guaranteeing their deaths by being drunk, drugged or just plain stupid.
As reported by THE DEPARTMENT FOR TRANSPORT 5% of road deaths were caused by driving in excess of speed limits.
I promise not to mention the handheld radar gun that clocks brick walls moving at 28mph.
I also promise not to mention the fixed laser equipment that clocks stationary m/cycles moving at 78 mph.

5%........ 1 in 20...... is still 1 in 20 too many for me!!!!
and we legistlate for drink driving way more than we do for speed camera's to reflex that... and the punishement for drink driving go way beyond those of speeding unless you speed to excess.....
i am sorry, but i am stuggling to find a reason for why people feel the need to speed in the first place
they don't put speed camera's in places where accidents haven't taken place......they have to be fully visable and warnings have to be given.... if you still go thru all that and get flashed, who's fault is that????
i am sorry but my sympathy for anyone who speeds is about as much asfor anyone crazy enough to get behind the wheel of a car drunk.......
some say that speed cameras save lives but theres no evidence of this, you don't hear of anyone being saved by a speed camera, but you do hear of people being killed at speed camera locations, they are there for revenue only in my opinion the 3 points is punishment enough so why the fine? that just backs up my opinion, but this isn't about the rights and wrongs of cameras its more about people who choose to ignore them and when they do they should take it on the chin and take the punishment.
"I know a guaranteed way to avoid getting caught by a speed camera..... Don't speed!!"
"By the same token I know a guaranteed way of not being convicted for dangerous driving, drunk driving, driving without insurance, license, m.o.t, road tax or even driving under the influence of drugs...... Don't Speed!
Pretty much sums speed cameras up.... Money Money Money!

If the police say that enough, people will believe it. How did the new A13 have SEVEN cameras on it the day it opened? Were there accidents 20 feet above the empty field where the flyovers were going to be built, or is this claim an outright lie?

Because speed limits are arbitrary. Speed limits are not chosen by people with any expertise in what is safe and what isn't, they are generally set by councils who want to placate local residents who bought a house next to a busy road, and don't give a damn about through traffic, because they don't have a vote in their borough, or by 'speed camera partnerships' who know that they will make more money if they put their cameras in places where it's perfectly safe to go much faster than the limit.
On my local main road, accidents went UP when the cameras came in, because people were going into the back of drivers who didn't know the limit, were doing a perfectly legal speed, but decided to do an emergency stop down to 29 'just to be safe' when they saw the dotted lines.
