Just to make some of you guys aware.

Certainly it has been known in the past, when out and about, to hook onto an unsecured Wi-Fi, although I have never really questioned the legality of it.

I heard this yesterday afternoon on the radio and I have to say I think it is theft and should be dealt with accordingly...
I know of at least 2 pals that do the same with there neighbours WIFI. It happens all over the place.

We had the same trouble with our next door neighbour untill we encrypted the router and left a message for them the next time they tried to patch in...

Spoil sport lol
I can't think of any valid reason why you wouldn't lock down a wireless router.
Besides giving access to confidential stuff if you share out files or folders, the use of your IP address could get you into all sorts of problems if it is abused.
It's theft, plain and simple. Not a lot different to breaking through into your loft and stealing your electric supply, is it.

Completely agree with the fact that it is theft. However, my perception is that not a lot of people see it as theft, they see it as purely a entry point to the net.
Certainly for me, I have used an open Wi-Fi for net access before, not all being home users, some, as I said earlier, especially in London, large companies. I did not really think of it as theft before I saw the link. I merely saw it as "well, if you are to stupid not to lock your router, I am going to use it".

ok, so maybe I'm being a bit thick here...but how do you use a laptop....away from home without a connection? can someone explain please ( in language I can understand!) lol

Most laptops come with a wireless capability these days. Not dissimilar to the ability of a bluetooth mobile to find other devices within range, a laptop can 'see' other networks within it's range. You can then select from the list which network you want to connect to. If it's locked down, you will need a 'key' (usually called a wep key) to gain access to that network; if it's not locked down, you can connect to the internet without further problems. Hope that helps.
Theres a couple that drive around and detect unsecured connections, then knock on the door and tell them. It was on a TV documentary a couple of months back, but then again so many people use stupid passwords or none at all.
A lot of people want the techknowledgy but dont look at the saftey aspects that need to go with wireless.
"West Mercia Police said people with wi-fi should follow security advice given by their internet provider."
i thought the topic was people using others ISP's?
If people are stupid enough to leave their routers open without even the most rudimentary security then they can hardly complain.
Not saying that it's right to use someone elses connection but try claiming on your insurance when your house gets broken into if you've left the front-door wide open.
I've used neighbours connections before when I've wanted to find out whether problems I was having with my connection were to do with my ISP or my router. They wouldn't get much joy if they tried to do the same via my router though.

Problem is not everyone is a clued up as the rest of us and just because someone isnt as clever at any particular thing should that be a reason for them to become victims dunno

And how many people actually become 'victims' of anything ?
As I said, I don't necessarily condone it but people have to take some responsibility upon themselves rather than just pleading ignorance...RTFM, for starters !

How about someone viewing illegal content via someone elses IP addy.....
Imagine the stigma when the Police come knocking on the door...........A stigma that most likely will never go away..... rolleyes
Read what I wrote.
I asked how many people actually became victims NOT what could they could become victims of !
If that article/arrest actually encourages people to check their security or at least ask questions about how to secure their connection then fair enough but it just smacked of media scare-mongering.
The cached version of the story isn't even the same as the story in the link.

 I havent got wifi...or whatever it's called, but I was thinking about it....I rang BT to see about getting it, but the lad I spoke to in the call center couldnt answer even quite basic questions I was askin him....
I'm a dumb blonde and hold my hands up to it....and if I got wifi....I'd probably do it all wrong and all my neighbours would be surfing away without my knowledge...
I reckon I'm best off without it..... confused

So basically you know as much as I do about how many people have become 'victims' then ? And if they do become 'victims' would the fact that they hadn't bothered to secure their own property (whether it was down to laziness, negligence or ignorance) be admissible ?
With most routers you get a manual that's about 3 pages long, tops, in which it tells you how to setup rudimentary security on there, surely it's not too much to ask that people take the responsibility to at least follow step-by-step instructions.

So if one day you neglect to lock your car and it gets stolen does that make it ok dunno
I can see where your coming from but it still doesnt make it ok if people havent/dont know how to/cant be arsed to secure their network..

I haven't suggested for one minute that it is OK but it seems to me that people want the freedom that the internet can offer without ever thinking about their responsibilities. You know as well as I do that chances are, if you neglect to lock your car, it WILL get stolen...so do people that neglect to secure their wireless networks and I'm sure they'd rather have their car nicked than be wrongfully labeled a (and it takes not much longer to put basic security on a wireless router than it does to lock your car). And you've made me forget what paragraphs are for now, as well smile

Oh no, don't do jobs smile
totally agree with you gands!
If someone gets wireless, doesnt set it up properly and it all goes tits up, well its their own fault. Basic security is easy to put in place even for complete novices so there really is no reason to plead ignorance when it all goes wrong. If the wep key is hacked, now thats different.....
If all alse fails just ask the neighbours 4 year old to set it up for you!! lol
