Have any of you seen the film lately? I know lots of people saw it in their late teens/early 20s and I am just wondering whether upon reviewing it at a more mature age you find it has the same impact on you. I got it from the videoclub but it seems unfamiliar to the point I wonder whether the one I am watching is a remake. For one thing, the original was in French and I am sure it was more explicit. But then again, after so many years, my memory could be deceiving me...
I actually watched it a few days ago, I now have a copy of it on dvd (copied from an original dubbed dvd}
and yeah, it had an effect on me, still unable how somebody could be so dominated by another to the extent they would accept those results

Oh you'd be surprised! ;) Anyway, what was the part in the film that most impressed you or had the greatest effect?
I preferred the book to the film. The film was very tame.
I agree - the film was tame. But the Book was an inspiration!

Have you read Story of O part 2? I felt that Pauline Reage was embarrassed by the first book and was trying to distance herself from it. confused
I guesss you mean Return to Roissy? Yes, it didn't have the same impact - but I enjoyed it none the less..
One of the presents I bought for Dawn last Christmas was "The Story of O", (book version not dvd)
Was it any good?
Well it was read cover to cover by boxing day, and Part II has been on order now for several weeks.
Ian
I read the book many moons ago redface
In my experience books are always so much better than films, so no way am I watching the film lol
Yeah, book for me any day....have read it about five times...it changed my life. First time I read it I was about 13. From that point I knew i was a sub....at least, I looked forward to being one. wink
I must confess I have never seen the film. But the book has always been at the forefront of my memory.
A MUST READ.
well I never read the book, but yes, I will admit that its very rare for a film to live up to the book, very rare
As to the part that most affected me, I think seeing how her love made her accept Sir Stefan as a joint master, then how she accepted his mark becuase she was so entranced by him, the biggest impact tho had to the change in her, from where she was first in the car on her way with renee to the final party where she wore just the mask and was so above everybody, how she seemed to be so overdressed even tho naked. If that makes any sense at all confused
Well it was different from me. First I saw the film and although I could not understand the concepts in it I was at that excitable age that you don't stop and analyse things, you just accept and enjoy them. Later on, a boyfriend happened to have the Story of O in comic version and that was a lot more explicit. I remember reading it in the balcony of his home under the moonlight and how he came up to me and started fondling me making the experience even more erotic! Unfortunately his mom was sleeping indoors or else we would be having sex under the stars. I read the book 3-4 years ago when my ex partner lent it to me. I was disappointed by the book and the lack of depth in the characters. You see by that time I was well immersed into the BDSM scene and knew that fantasies and reality don't match. Never read the sequel as my ex said it was not worth reading but will wait to hear from Dawn smile
Heheh I forgot to mention that the most erotic bit for me this time round was the love making between Igor and O. There was something in the way he held her head, totally possessing her that I could not resist. I am a sucker for a man who knows how to embrace a woman's head - am I weird or what? LOL
I have the book and the film, and was devastated that the film lacked the passion and really missed the way the book got into O's head. Despite a lot being unsaid in both book and film , for me the character in the book was a lot more real and you could feel her pain and see her change from caterpillar to butterfly. The relationships just weren't explored to the same depth in the film.
I read the book after many years of being within the BDSM scene and can agree that you do see the difference between reality and fantasy, anyone reading the book hoping to move into the BDSM scene I personally feel might be misled.
The film should never have been made ~ it's an attempt to turn a "serious" subject into soft porn and missed out the most important aspects of a D/s relationship sad It portrayed the D/s side of things moreso than the Emmanuelle series but was made in a similar style.
Remade now, I think the film would look and feel very different such were the restrictions of the 70's/80's.

Kristof, you are by no means alone in your "disbelief" towards domination, all I can say is that domination is not cruel and BDSM should not be viewed as abuse. D/s relationships are very much about love and trust, the film did not portray these aspects at all sad
Domination is a great skill to have, truely it can make the difference between mediocre sex and great sex and submissives often have a state of mind called subspace that they withdraw into and feelings/experiences and emotions are genuinely heightened. If a Dominant can get a submissive into this (which is a great skill) then sex moves into a different realm completely.
Neither the book or the film perfectly captured these aspects but the book was slightly better.

sorry if i caused offence with that statement, but I truly do not understand it, I know the concept of it, i know that there is more trust between a dom and sub than most would realise. I suppose that here the inability lies with me as life has never allowed me to place that much trust in anybody.
I may if its ok with you PM at a later time to ask questions on this subject

Kristof, truely no offence was taken ~ a lot of people struggle with aspects of BDSM because it can be very complex and to start to explore it is like looking for the end of the pasta in a bowl of spaghetti
I'd be happy to chat about it.... there are some great resources bok and web based that I can recommend which would definitely help you.
As for the trust ..... honey .. a few people here know my background and history of domestic violence ... I have been there with the trust issue, and can pick individuals now whom I can trust but there was a point when I never believed I could trust again ... either vanilla or BDSM wise.

Don't worry Kristof, I don't think you have offended anyone.

It is not easy to let go of oneself. It is not easy to trust. Just because someone claims to be a Dom/me or Master/Mistress that does not immediately qualify them to take responsibility for your well being. Even professional Dommes or Masters are sometimes not to be trusted...
I have a lot to learn
Calista you have a PM
Tania, thanx

Crypes! I was still reading Just William when I was 13! Mind you, when the Outlaws attacked Hubert Lane, there could be a heck of a lot of violence. And that Violet Elizabeth Bott! "I'll thcream and thcream till I'm thick!" WTF was that all about?
Mike.
