name calling pls

To be described as 'having strong views', you'd have strong views. How can that be an excuse for anything?
Having a viewpoint that is strongly held, or having an opinion which you argue/defend strenuously? dunno
It depends on where you live........... rolleyes

I don't mind strong views at all.... I have plenty on a lot of subjects, I think that most people do, however it is the way that those views are presented which is the issue of contention.... i.e doing it without belittling others for not having the same opinions.... without the personal attacks,
that is my problem...... if people can rationalise there views and opinions, i may not agree with them, but i can respect there views....
does that make sense

of course and very well put!
there are different types of strong view in my opinion.
one might have views that are "extreme" or "severe"
someone might make their points in an "assertive way" ... and be regarded as having strong views... because they are being blunt.
I agree dee cee, people my not necessarily care one way or another in an argument or debate as we like to call them in the forum, but its the way the put across their views, which make them come across as a strong view.
for example, i could say to the question
'which is better butter or margerine'
i dont really care much to be honest because I dont really like either.
an ambivalent, non comittal view
or i could say
To be honest, i dont really give a flying fuck weather marg or butter is better because they are both as vile as each other and are just clogging up peoples fucking arteries anyway.
again, sitting on the fence with regards to an opinion, but put in a far differnt way that makes it seem strong or forceful.

i understand your point you two but can someone defend their views strongly without being extreme, forceful or arrogant..

If they do it with intelligence, humour and manners I don't see why not?

yes you can.....but often you are atleast one of the three.
It goes with the territory and depends upon the person your making the point to IMO. Also known as being subjective.
its all "action and reaction" and "horses for courses" in my view.

its all action and reaction this is excatly what i mean its the opposition who will label you opinionated or having strong views when they back down on a debate

when they back down on a debate

Not everyone backs down from a debate, some just stop debating because the debate becomes a slagging match or it stops being fun and that is what this site is primarily about now, having fun, whether it be thro swinging, meeting people socially or just chatting to friends. lol
I have even posted stupid things to make light of the situation but to no avail, if you can't laugh at yourself then you ought to get out more.
It's not about, going to your bed plotting revenge on someone who didn't agree with your views(not meant personally to anyone).
We are all adults on here and should be behaving like them but sometimes shewwzzzzzzz it's like handgbags at 10paces

i dont dispute any words on that little lecture but you must respect some threads will expect different or controversial views
The main problem is not the exchanging of 'strong views'. It is the mind state that involves winners and losers. Since you can't have a winner without having a loser and nobody wants to lose.
I suspect that a few posts here aren't going to change someones strongly held opinions.
I just think of this place as a game. A nice chat, an arguement, or joke they don't really add up to much. Sure I've learnt a lot and some of my views have changed due to what I have read but its all tomorrows chip wrappings isn't it? wink

Please don't look upon that as a lecture,it's just how I see this place as fun and nothing more but obviously different people have different views about SH and what they get out of it is up to them.
Its human nature that different people have different views and personalities, that's what sets us apart from each other.
It would be a boring world if everyone thot the same and dressed the same etc, altho it would be handy buying second hand clothes cos they would always fit. lol

I believe you can say things in a constructive way which doesn't need to came across as extreme, forceful or arrogant or aguementative.
I would always say what I feel about a topic, where I stand but wouldn't like people to think of me in any of those ways, but then I suppose some might. dunno

perhaps the trouble with the written word is that there is no voice to hear the inflection, so that something that might sound humourous in your head actually reads like twisted vitreol.
And also the term strong opinions can be a euphomism for someone who is biggoted (that is not aimed at anyone in particular on this forum). But to me a strong view is one that shapes a persons behaviour or view of the world.A significant belief if you like.
