Am I the only one that is becoming fed up with the new super thin, super useless carrier bags.
When will they learn that these bag are 1 no better for the environment and 2 do not even work too well at carrying shopping !!
Asda used crappy bags a couple of years ago - they didn't even make it away from the checkout before they split. They got replaced pretty fast.
You might get some improvement by complaining direct to the customer service.
I try to remember to take bags and re-use them. But I sometimes have to get new ones - and the quality isn't there - but then maybe that's part of encouraging us to buy those better ones and re-use them. The good ones are only 5p at Asda - I use them for all sorts.
I bought a lifetime bag from Somerfield. I've got them from all the supermarkets but Somerfield's effort is by far the best... by miles in fact! It's a black nylon carrier, fits loads and squishes up to fold into itself and hides away in my handbag without taking up a load of space!
Just thought I'd share! biggrin

And you have the cheek to call me a geek!

Take reusables, job jobbed. wink
I remember a time when you used to have to pay for carry bags anyways...
But with supermarkets making so much money anyways.. I though the least they could do is give its customers good free bags
As others have said, it's to make you buy the reusable ones.
Be green - reuse and recycle and all that!
True to my tree-hugging reputation, I have a hessian/jute bag from Shared Earth. :smug:
wink
I reckon they've made the bags so shit so that people will buy the re-useable ones ....... we bought loads of the material ones which are really good apart from the fact that we always forget to take them shopping!!!!

Shurrup! smackbottom
I've already realised that I sound like a pensioner... I was kinda hoping it was gonna slip on by! redface
I always use my hessian bags. They should stop using plastic bags altogether and start giving out strong paper ones instead.
What is wrong with using plastic ones though ?
Paper bags are no good in the rain

No ones talking about paper bags. Most of the reusables are stronger and carry more than the plastic throwaway ones- and they're fine in the rain.

I mentioned scrapping plastic for paper in my post.

Like I said, no-one rolleyes

In all seriousness- apologies, I wandered away in between hitting the "reply" and "submit" buttons- cross posted. wink
The problem with plastic bags isn't the plastic - it's the single use.
The plastic simply doesn't break down. The bags are filling landfill and blowing all over the countryside. You'll see them in hedgerows all over the place.
It's about as sensible to throw a plastic carrier bag away after one use as it is to throw a mobile away after one call. Just cos it's cheap and easily replaceable doesn't mean it's disposable. Disposable has to mean degradable - and not in 50 years.
I like the fabric bags, but as I said I use the Asda lifetime bags mainly. I'm not sait at it - I often forget to take them out of the car ffs, LOL

I'm much better now at remembering to take them out of the house- it's just a routine to learn, after all. Phone..keys...we usually remember these, don't we? It's all a matter of habit.
I still haven't quite mastered remembering to take them out of the fecking car though rolleyes Although when I forget them I just take the trolley to the car & bag up there...yes, even in the cold/rain, too.

I was just thinking they should have signs in the car park and on the way into the store reminding you to get the bags out of the car. So often I get to the check out and remember I've left them in the boot! :lol2:

I am sorry, but I really have to take you up on that. Plastic bags do degrade, and quite quickly..
You try a find and plastic bags more than 3 years old. Most plastics are a material that breaks down in air and sunlight.

That's a good idea- not dissimilar to one I've had. We have a couple of pay & display supermarket car parks nearby- so something on the ticket machines/ back of tickets would be good too. Even a scrolling message such as "printing ticket- don't forget your bags" too.
I always use environmentally friendly Hessian/Jute bags. If you buy plain ones you can decorate them yourself if you wish
I don't like ones with brand names on confused :?

I don't go places where you have to pay for parking on principle, but yep would be a good idea. Only thing is you'd get so used to seeing the signs that eventually you'd ignore them and still turn up at the till with no bags! :lol2:

"The average plastic carrier bag is used for five minutes, but takes 500 years to decompose.
- DEFRA, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs."
That's my source - what's yours?
In edit : Also this -
UNEP mentioned in it is the United Nations Environment Program. And you should see the pictires of landfill - a sea of plastic bags with the odd other bit dotted about. try Google images "landfill".
