Oooohhh....I may have to spank anyone on this posting for suggesting we get 6 weeks 'off'!!! But hey...it has given me the time to join this site and have lots of laughs at so many very funny postings!!!!
As for the boards...it is now an 'Interactive Whiteboard.' Only pens used on it are special ones that are touch screen.....although I have screwed up and written on the huge computer screen with normal board pens (oooops!).

hello wave and :welcome: to SH....
I've got my grandchildren doing a sculpture project - really keeping them quiet! Me too, I'm enjoying getting messy with the mod rock! Anyone want to let me plaster their leg or summut? Got plenty left lol

Same here, might consider getting dressed in a bit biggrin
There are some advantages to having the kids home, like my breakfast got made for me and so was my cuppa smile

My cuppa was made for me by my son - sadly he drew the line at making my breakfast!
The only disadvantage to him being here is that I have to be dressed.

The advatage of having pre teen kids LOL, although my 11 yr old had a fit when I answered the door to my neighbour yesterday in my dressing gown redface She is quite prudish, but my dressing gown is neck to ankle!!!!
Well - I went back to work today and although it was a hell of a shock when the alarm went off at 6:20 and it was an incredibly busy day in school, it was lovely to see all my colleagues and will be lovely to see the children tomorrow.
My post count is up by 45; it beats my shag count but the latter was better quality!
A happy and healthy new term to the teachers :jagsatwork: and the taught :taz:!
just returned today, and........... well where do I begin my rant?
Firstly thanks to the wonderful person that mentioned the very long hours, well in excess of the 48 hours agreed by some idiot in mainland europe!
Secondly the time we happen to take holidays coincides with the time that various companies push up their prices (yes, supply and demand etc but it still pisses me off)
Thirdly... well I studied at University for three years, did a PGCE second degree, did my masters and still if I was newly qualified would be earning less than an unqualified (other than GCSE) police officer that is eligible for overtime, that works for 30 years and then is pensioned off (at age 50!) and the pension is better too. And when people whinge that exams must be getting easier 'cos the children pass with higher grades it's never the teachers that may be doing their job well is it? mad
Actually is that all thirdly? redface
I need a drink. And if JB thinks he's going to get lucky tonight he's got another think coming 'cos I'll be on my fifth gin!
Love to all!
Hmmm 15162-14905 = 257 posts.
Went back to work today - no kids though. Had a boring day - the morning was spent with a list of dates which the headteacher explained very carefully. Clearly we can't even be trusted to copy dates into diaries and also understand that the events listed will take place on the stated dates rolleyes
I have one more day of freedom left!! Training day on Wed and kids back Thurs! Hmmmm.....what shall I do with my day tomorrow?? I know...go pick up the new printer I've ordered so that I can finish the printing I've been trying to do for school as my printers packed up! After my last lie in, of course! I think I deserve it having found out this morning that I'm not going to be having a half term holiday!
Good grief it won't be long until half term! biggrin

They are easier than 20 years ago hence why the current way in which exams are done will change again. Or the A levels that may well be replaced with something else as employers, and they are the ones who count, do not really value GCSE grades anymore. As everybody passes them now.
Also yes teachers should take the credit for higher exam passes, but is it not also true that 30% or thereabouts of kids leave school without the skills of reading and writing? I read that somewhere only recently. So whilst teachers should be praised for the high passes, what is the reason for so many kids not being able to do the basic 3 r's when they leave school? dunno
Just a question as I only know for sure sometimes what I read, but I think they were Goverment figures.

Interesting but....
What percentage of that 30% actually bother going to school in the first place :dunno:
Look round any shopping centre and day of the week and you will see kids who ought to be in school.....How many of those are persistant truants I wonder ?

That is a valid point Steve, one which I cannot answer.
What I do know is mrs777's kids schools Ofsted report was so bad they sacked the Head teacher, and critisised the teachers and the methods used. They were also put down for I think a 6 monthly review by Ofsted. Now when that kind of crititism towards a head teacher happens, it does make you wonder. That report had nothing to do with truants but the methods used by the school.
Also my Grandaughters schools Ofsted report was terrible too as was the primary school that is linked to it. I do not know the reasons for sure or the answers, if I did I would be a rich man. lol
I say let the teachers do the job they are paid to do and that is teach, and not be loaded with all the other crap they have to deal with. If that was taken away from them they would have more time to teach which is why they joined that profession. :dunno:
The problem as I see it isn't really down to the teachers. By and large they are no better or worse than any other public employee.
The fault, in my view, is the Government. They are the ones who set the targets, syllabus and expectations. They are also the ones who interfere, give conflicting mandates and generally make the teachers job harder than it needs to be. Then throw into the mix their progressive erosion of the teacher's authority, stupid rules (e.g. can't bring xmas presents in because it might offend the moslems FFS).
With all the bureaucracy I'm amazed the teachers find time to teach anything anyway.
Anyway, my kids left school with an amazing ability to lose vowels, ask how to spell the simplest of words and generally have piss poor literacy in spite of the fact that they are intelligent kids. rolleyes

Some of it surely is with all the bollocks brought in nowadays but, Ofsted have slated the teachers at mrs777's kids school. I do not know what the answers are but surely all the kids that leave nowadays who cannot read or write properly, cannot all be down to Goverments. dunno

According to their English teacher, with whom I had several blazing rows, it is. According to her spelling is not considered a deal-breaker and they are quite happy with phonetics so long as "what they are trying to say comes through". Then throw text-speak into the mix and bye-bye vowels.
Doing occasional work at my solicitor mate's offices I have seen university students on work release and summer jobs typing legal documents complete with "u r 2 c what de othr prty desides". I shit you not.

The teachers are told what to teach and what they don't need to teach. Where emphasis should be used and where it shouldn't be. It's a cumulative thing, and it's been building up for decades. You only have to look at some of the literacy in posts and adverts to see that. Yes people can get their point across, but they either can't spell, punctuate or construct a grammatically correct sentence or they don't want to. The effect is the same.
As much as it irritates me I don't actually blame them. I blame the steady decline of the English education system.

Bad workman and tools spring to mind on that one?
It seems I am knocking the teachers which I really dont mean to do as most do a grand job and one I would never want to do, teaching some of the little shits that are out there. But there are some shit teachers too, and when you look at so many schools Ofsted reports that blame the teachers it does make you wonder where it has all gone wrong.

The thing is that's it's a recursive problem. Teachers themselves are products of a declining educational system. Each successive generation of teachers is effectively getting a substandard primary education so eventually the baseline shifts. From what I've seen myself and from what others have said, reported, bemoaned the literacy standard in this country has plummeted and is currently circling the drain.
And the galling thing is that syntax and spelling pedants like myself are told to ease up on the corrections and comments. So basically people know their literacy is going down the shitter and are seemingly quite happy to watch it go.

Maybe our " new " language is there to help all the foreigners. dunno
Teachers. Pay them a good professional rate for their services and give them a standard 08:30 - 17:00 five day week with 5 - 6 weeks paid leave per annum as in most other professions.
Get rid of the pupils having massive breaks during weird times of the year and maybe just a week in every five off or something similar. The spare weeks that the pupils are not at school and the teachers are, could be used to do teacher training and other stuff such as planning and possibly marking etc.
Stop the twatting around let the teachers teach basic education with more backing from everyone. Stop all this after hours unpaid work they do and let them have a more regular way of working. It seems to me a little unfair that they are expected to do this sort of thing in this day and age lets give them the respect and conditions afforded to other professionals and treat them accordingly.
Is this too radical approach? It is just an idea
