Incidentally, If I plug the laptop in at work and sit in the network - I can browse the Internet ok.

Point to a IP address conflict or a firewall problem.
Are you running a firewall ??
How are connecting to the Internet at home (USB modem, Router, wet bit of string)??
How do you connect at work - I would guess via a network cable to your works network ??
Yep now just using the microsoft one...
Its a USB modem to pipex......wet bit of string might well be more effective lol
At work - network cable.
Ok, If your using XP service pack 2, the built in firewall it can mess up the number of threads you can run. Hence, loads first page but rest will not. This usually happens with USB modems due to USB threading.
Disconnect from the BB and reconnect will reset this, but will still only allow first/second page , then nowt.
Only option at the moment, if this is the case, is a format and reinstall - sorry.
Turning off the M$ firewall with XP SP2 appears to have no effect on the problem.
Another option is to throw away the USB modem and get a modem Gateway router such as the Netgear DG834 (with hardware firewall), there is no threading problem then.
If using XP service pack 1
You can try turing off the M$ firewall and see what happens. Install a software firewall such as the free version of ZoneAlarm (much better that M$ as well).

I actually have that router - just not been too successful with obtaining the IP from pipex - so not used it. Perhaps - I should try that again nad ditch windows for linux!!!!!
lol
Broadband should be a static IP, Pipex should be able to supply your IP to you, or assign you a static IP. You then just put that into the setup of the router (along with PPPoA protocol, DNS, username and password).
Alternatively, can try "sheilds up" on , which will list your IP address (in the text down the page) as part of the security test.
Routers are not good at getting server assigned IP addresses, as the DHCP is for the inner LAN and not the outer WAN.
Dumping Windows for Linux wouldn't help here, but it would be imune to viruses lol
Am i the only person who doesn't have a clue WTF you're all on about

Dunno why I keep coming back really, maybe I'll learn something. I'm off work and they've offered to post me a CD-ROM so I can work toward my ECDL. It might 'get lost'

No worries Bev,
And no, I haven't seen you - but don't be so negative babe... plenty of folks out there to do that for ya, without having a go yourself.
And these PC's ain't that hard to get your head round... it's just a myth perpetuated by techie-types 'n' geeks so we...err, I mean THEY look cool! smile

That works in reverse as well, BV04SEL is a Semiconductor chip from Seimens Electrical OR the reg number of a car I saw in Tesco's car park today. :haha:

avast virus checker free
ps i have found that some replys from this site with links have had a virus in, beware!

Avast will misreport some sites that have Java content as a virus. One of the drawback s of using a free programme.
Personally, I use McAfee (Norton is full of bugs) and hardware firewalls.

Just a small possibility... as you can use this machine to access the net on another network, its possible that the problem is not your pc.... We had a problem with our ADSL, which after a quick phone call to the service provider they confirmed as a "Stale connection" and sorted within 2 hours

Stale connections can be cured by yourself in 15 minutes, simply by disconnecting the modem / router from the phone line and waiting 15 minutes before reconnecting. Typically, the control software at the central node will disconnect your session within 10 minutes of you unplugging. When you plug in again, you are on a new session (new VP connection).
Agreed that problem could be with the ISP end, but XP service pack 2 has been known to cause the problems noted.

Arse - I can't fix the PC or spell................
I'll get me coat ;)
You don't need an external IP (Static) for the Router. It will have it's own internal IP usually starting So can't see the problem using it. Just get the settings from Pipex's site.
They will be something like:
Protocol: PPPoA
VPI 0
VCI 38 (VPI/VCI is sometimes shown as 0/38)
Encapsulating Type: VC MUX
Modulation:
Your Username
Your Password
Authentication: PAP or CHAP
Primary DNS server:
Secondary DNS server:

Thanks - i'll try that when i get back home.
Hope that will sort it - gonna have to print out all the advice, won't be able to get online to access it when i get home sad
I'm pretty sure it's not a stale connection as the modem is often unpluged during the day.

Are these servers the Pipex DNS servers ?? or another (Open) ISP ?? If not Pipex, they may not work.
Options (terminology) with Netgear routers are slightly different, eg, Encapsualtion option is PPPoA and Multiplexing is VC based (VC-Mux)
Netgear gateway router also requires the IP address assigned to you by your ISP. These gateway routers are NOT very good at picking up the IP automatically from the ISP. Hence it is better to get your IP address from Pipex for ease of configuration.
Your internal network addreses will be automatic.
EDIT: Firmware version for DG834 overcomes automatic detection problem of IP address from ISP
Sorry to bore yiou with techy bits innocent
