I know this is getting to be a pain, and I have looked, but . . . . . .
I have ( I think ) Windows Messenger, or .Net Messenger dunno running somewhere in the background.
I can't find it to turn it off.
I use MSN Messenger 7 without any problems, and have that set up to NOT fire up on auto when I connect to the net. But sometimes people say "Hello" if I'm connected to the net; in a window/box that looks like an old version of msn - beforeI fire up msn. If I then fire up MSN, the previous boxes close with a message along the lines of "You've been logged out there because you've logged in somewhere else"
I've clicked the "help", "about" thingy, and that tells me it's version of Windows Messenger. In the WM box, there is no "tools" menu drop down, so I can't go there to turn it off.
I understand that WM is part of (?) XP Home Edition, but can't find it in the programmes lists, or anywhere else.
PMSL - All that ^^^^^ to say "Can anyone help me turn off Windows Messenger without affecting MSN 7 ??"
If this is locked - please - please somebody, anybody, everybody (not) PM an answer or call/text/email/write it on the side of a cow worship

Microsoft Messenger is installed in XP by default, MSN Messenger is the one that most people use, go into Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, then Add/Remove Windows components and uninstall Windows Messenger.
If you want it still installed, but not automatically running then double click the icon in the system tray and click (from memory) Tools, Options, then under the preferences tab you have something like "Run at Startup". just read that you said there was no tools menu, redface
Hope this helps, Mr DB sir.
Chris
Actually, I've just checked on a spare XP machine in my office it has installed and there is a Tools menu.

Thanks Chris.
The only "messenger " showing in Add/remove Programmes is MSN 7.
In the "Add/remove Window components" bit "Windows Mesenger" is unchecked and shows as zero MB.
To find 'Windows Messenger', press the 'window key' (usually between 'Ctrl' & 'Alt') and 'f' at the same time which will bring up a search screen, then look for 'Windows Messenger' which should show you where it is on your system.
To see where it is running (and stop it it !)
Press 'Ctrl' + 'Alt' + 'Delete' at the same time which should bring up the' Windows Task Manager'. In the 'Applications' tab, you should see 'Windows Messenger', scroll down to this and press the 'End Task' button which should close it down. If you can't see it there, go to the 'Processes' tab and find ' ' (not , as this is MSN Messenger !) and then press the 'End Process' button.
None of this should affect MSN Messenger.
To stop it running at startup you need to amend your 'Startup' processes within MSCONFIG...PM me for details !!
Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

Right, in that case put the check back in that box, ok it, let it reinstall and then go back and uncheck it. Call me on my mobile, I'll call you back and we can chat about it, see what we can find if you like.

No worries...it's quite easy really...just drop me a PM for more info if you have any problems.
As an aside, you can run the two side by side quite happily (you can log on with two different addresses). We often do it if we're chatting to another couple, so they know who they're talking to !
