Hi all smile....thinking about getting an Ipod or something similar.....any suggestions/recommendations??
Gary...
wor lass has FINALLY got a machine that she can connect to SH to, at home.
Never one for an easy life she has a HP web book with integral camera... woop woop splendid says...
Unfortunately. we can neither download messenger or get the 'Gaim' messenger system, that is in with Linux operating system that she purchased, to utilise the camera. Now, this may not be much of a problem as she can look knackered when working a long day. But at least with a working camera I would have the option of viewing or not.
Please... how can we either install MSN messenger (no CD drive) or use the camera with Linux's 'Gaim' messenger thingiemebob.
in edit- the HP notebook thing doesn't even know it has a camera... so can't get it to recognise itself. (can hardware be using some sort of hallucinogen?)
Answers on a postcard.
super
thanks in advance
This may be a really silly question but why are you using Linux and not XP or Vista??
I know a lot of folks do use Linux but in your case I am not sure why you have it???

net books ususally come pre loaded with an op system and the cheaper ones seem to opt for Linux as you can save a whole load of cash if you don't have to pay Mr Gates for his shiney, shiney quality op system rolleyes
Splendid, you should have a usb port, to install it form a memory stick, or a flash drive of some sort on the web book, possibly a CF or SD card. If you can plug it into another pc (maybe using a card reader- only about £5 from ebuyer) you can copy the install for Messenger onto it, you still need to be online to install it though.
If you can't find the install or get it in (think you might need a few other Microsoft things like Dotnet) you know where to find me (yep, i'll be on MSN laughing at you)

gaim (or pidgin as it is now) doesn't support webcams yet. Do you happen to know what distribution of linux it's running or what kernel version?
This MSN client does:

But it's not clear if linux is recognising the webcam, try aMSN for starters and if it doesn't work, then more information will be required about the flavour of linux being run.
thanks chaps.... we are working our way around this with your guidence.
It would seem that Wor lass is looking to move to the dark side and give Bill gates some of her hard earned dosh. I am opposing that and attempting to help. I will keep you updated.
and cheers meaty rolleyes

Try usuing Videolan, free media player that makes windows media player the equivalent of finding used toilet paper in a box of tissues
Can anyone tell me please what this message means it just popped up while I was reading the forums, I know it has nothing to do with them.
Connection established
Remote user is browsing your library
Connection closed by remote peer
Just seemed a bit freaky! lol
Do you have a firewall switched on?
(go to start, settings, control panel, network and internet settings and click the firewall option. make sure it says 'on')
Do you have a wireless internet system? is it encrypted? (it should be, or someone can access your network/pc/internet connection if it isn't)
Thanks meat, however even the video clips on here keep buffering something that has never happened before, any ideas?

In windows media player, go to options and then the performance tab. click the 'set buffer to x seconds' option and have a play with that, see what happens. might be worth testing your internet connection speed too and maybe try doing the old cache clear/update everything thing
