File sharing on pc's and laptops sharing wireless networks.....
Is it possible to only share files with certain people using the network?? but still allowing others to connect to it??
For instance, Could I set something up so that I could file share with deks laptop and vise versa but not sharing files with my sons pc or the likes of parents who often connect to my wireless network with their own laptops??
So if I was sending rude pics to deks lappy the family would not see them
Or is it a worthless feature not worth bothering with lol redface surprisedops:
Thanks Tan x

The easiest way i can think of without arseing round with network permissions is to use bluetooth, some lappys have it built in or you can buy a bluetooth usb dongle from ebuyer for about £4. just switch it on, search for a device.
Thanks meaty will have a play around later I know the printer and my laptop have bluetooth built in not sure about the pc or deks lappy though lol
kiss
Woohoo I had a funky new laptop for (well just after xmas) bloody thing is huge though compared to my old notebook!!
I just need to get our network sorted out at home now rolleyes

This is the dongle thingy i was on about
Network file sharing is fairly simple to set up as long as you know all your passwords....Anyone else just using your wireless internet would not have permission to file share with the networked computers.....

Get TrueCrypt (it's free) from here... create an encrypted drive on an existing partition, share the drive and as long as only you and dek know the password to the encrypted drive, it's as safe as (pre-credit crunch) houses. Obviously, you'll both need to have TrueCrypt installed. Keeps your files safe from any prying eyes that might get onto your pc/laptop too. All our 'private' files are on them so the kids wouldn't get too much of a shock if anything unexpected happened to us !! If you need any help, let me know.
Help!!
The power input on my laptop has failed. It's out of warranty. Is it fixable? How much would it cost (roughly)?
Was the burning/soldering smell a bad sign?

The power input on my laptop has failed. It's out of warranty. Is it fixable? How much would it cost (roughly)?
Do you mean the little pin in the back is wobbly and you can't get it to keep powered/charging easily? if it iis then it'll probably be £30-40 to fix
Was the burning/soldering smell a bad sign?
Errrr, could be  mine did the same thing and is now sat in a cupboard waiting to be dismantled and sold on ebay for spares, best have a word with whoever you see about the power repair...anything over about £80 total (unless it was an expensive laptop and only just out of warranty) and i think it's worth considering a new lappy fro the sales, which is what i'm doing when i get my arse in gear

It's been fixed once - under warranty. Apparently that was the problem. The fix was a patch rather than a proper job. Needs a new motherboard now Grrrrr. But still cheaper than a new laptop. biggrin:D:D:D

If you paid for a repair and got a bodge then ask them to sort it out for free, if they say no then have a word with trading standards. they moght not be able to sort them out but they will be a pain in the arse for the lazy sods that did the piss poor job n the first place
I've been advised to switch to Firefox as Internet Explorer is so vulnerable to viruses, but I'm finding the font a lot harder to read - it was darker in I.E.
Is there any way to make Firefox look like I.E's font?
Quote by varca
IE is far more vulnerable and I never use it, have been with Firefox for years. Not sure how to make the font darker, I suspect its a Ctrl + another key, will investigate for you. I have recently started using Google Chrome, much faster, just as secure as Firefox and it looks cleaner and is more easily navigable. The font is dark from this end. Might be worth a look for you Cherry. Or try Opera, like the old Netscape Navigator or at least it was, may have been enhanced now, not used it for a bit but the fonts were clear in that

Thanks I'll go check Chrome out right now!
In edit - the text in Chrome is darker, you are right, Varca. But the text in Firefox is bigger - not sure yet which is easier to read... thanks for the advice!

Here you go Cherry
From the menu bar in Firefox choose Tools, Options, Content. You can then select your font biggrin

omg you are fab! Ta :bounce:
How the internet works in semi- rural Cheshire
So my computer has plenty of memory available, been defragnented, is virus free, browsing history deleted, cookies deleted and its actually responding quite quick for a change. So it seems to me, that this is how the internet works in rural Cheshire
1]. I type in my desired website address or search engine requirement
2]. This information then passes along some very dodgy telephone wires to my front door
3]. Just before the front door, the information is intercepted by a very old Franciscan Monk who lives as a hermit in the cupboard by my front door
4] Said Franciscan Monk transcribes information requirement onto the shell of a snail, using wonderful, fully illustrated calligraphy that you would find in a ancient tome.
5] ‘Fully Loaded’ snail sets off down my drive, only to be attacked by the local blackbird.
6] Blackbird tries to eat snail, but in his excitement drops shell
7]Dropped shell lands on the back of a goat being herded to market by the local drover
8] Snail shell falls off goats back, right outside my local telephone exchange
9] Snail crawls into telephone exchange
10] Where information is processed by the speed of light and onto the superhighway
11] Information is gathered
12] whole process is reversed to get the information back to my PC
So my thoughts are this
I pay for a service from BT to provide broadband at speeds of up to 8Mb with unlimited download facility.
Am I paying for something that I haven’t a cats chance in hell of achieving?
Can my computer actually tell me what speed service I am getting or do I need to buy / download software to do that??
Look forward to your responses
Andy
Down by the clock in the bottom right hand corner you will see an icon, 2 computer screens . Hang the mouse over in and you will see basic information about the connection.
If you would like more detail, right click and left click 'status'.
PS loved the make shift communications you have with BT.

M8-me try this to see what speed you are getting at different times of the day, The yellow icon is the recommended server to use and you will get a thing like this

Im paying for 10mb (10 000 kb/s)
(check the ms ping also mine is 18 but when my mam had problems hers was 150 ish and slow and getting disconnected all the time)
If your unsure of reading it, Copy the forum link in to the reply box.
Thanks & Tankinky
I basically think i'm stuffed
my upload was at 350kb/s
My download was at 1462kb/s
I pinged at 86ms
So does that mean The Franciscan Monk theory is correct?
Am I only getting or thereabouts?
so i should be paying for something less right??

Just a thought but is it possible you are sharing your physical connection and that is depleting the speed drastically? A friend had this problem and had the provider come out to look and they had to put in a separate cable/line and now he gets what he should be getting. dunno
Ooo theres a thought. Thanks V, i will get hold of BT ithink and see what they say.
It is just so painfully slow at times
Andy

Yup you are only getting 1.5 mb speed (at the time you took the test)
It is worthwhile to try the test a few times at different times of the day
Definately phone BT though and tell them your not happy and give them the test results, It may be a fault on the line
Is anyone else in the house using the same internet connection (wireless etc?)
I have a technical question... actually I have several! redface
1. Firefox... sometimes when I use Facebook it comes up with a "404" google thingy saying page not found?
2. The sound doesn't work on my telly unless I'm on channel EXT2. But I have to turn over to EXT1 so that I can see the cable guide. It's really really annoying!
3. My wireless box seems to have stopped working. I think it's something to do with the lead for it rather than the actual box cause the lead for the broadband thingy works in it as well but obviously one lead for two thinks doesn't work. Can you get a new lead for the wireless box or am I just as well to get a new one?
I think there's something wrong with my hoover too but I'm not sure that's a technical hitch! surprisedops:
