Fabio if we never did anything wrong we would never learn not to do it again smile.....
Gary ...
Well... I'm happy with the result of Ipod transfer & re-loading etc etc.
Admittedly I chose a programme that I had to pay for, but that was due to having problems downloading a free one. I've had so many problems with this lappy recently that I was very wary of cocking it all up again.
so... downloaded the programme, transfered all tunes fron pod to file (not on the lappy, but straight through to a file on an external HD, so Im no longer clogging up the lappy anyway) then downloaded a fresh iTunes, again straight to exHD... crossedfingers and eyes... oi viola!!! done.
transfered, booted, arse kicked, and I safely rock n roll once more.
(I'm celebrating with Puddle of Mudd as I stab at this here keyboard)
I believe the price merrited the download, what with over 30 G's of sound to save. All good.
Thanks for the advice folks.

Nice one random.....have got a prog but not had time to try it yet....

right.... here is one... help guys because my eyesight don't think can cope with this for much longer...
i use firefox as a browser and all of my browsers open up and the text is all the same size (1024x768)... but somehow i have done something... not sure what... and one side that i use now has text much smaller than the others.....
help... i am squinting like mad.....
frustrated of tyneside...

With firefox, you can change the text size 'on-the-fly' by using CTRL and +/- (i'm too lazy to move my hand over to the mouse)
Good tip Lilly.....shortcuts are always helpful....firefox has a few useful ones....

ok, so after saving my laptop once, dagging it from the jaws of the skip with dextrous manipulation of 'f'-keys and 'safe-modes'... resetting to 'factory' and even having the wireless come back from the dead as a result....
.... my un-dead zombie lappy was only pacing listlessly through the park in search of flesh awaiting it's inevitable demise at the hands of a baseball bat wielding starlett, or simply falling to it's knees in it's own filth for lack of sustanance...
It's dead!
or is it?
I try to revive it. Lightening rods and van derGraff Generators abound, though now the twice dead lappy will do no more than show a power light... with the occasional (and I mean 'occassional') flash from the disc activity light thiningie.
the screen is as dark as my soul... I hear it breathing, but that appears to be just an automatic responce.
Is there hope?

do you lean forward to read the screen when you type?
if so, check your tits aren't resting on the arrow keys wink
:laughabove:
I kind of have a technical query of sorts for the PC/ Music people.
I have a music keyboard with Midi, a cable to connect the Midi to a USB port and some software to use with it, however try as I might, I cannot get the damn things to talk to each other.
I am a complete novice here and I am wondering if anyone has set up a keyboard to pc via midi and used some really REALLY basic software to begin playing around with things?
If anyone can help it'd be much appreciated because I'm baffled.
might sound silly Res, but have you enabled the midi out on the keyboard?
also, midi uses channels to seperate the signal to multiple midi units on the chain (upto 16). make sure your keyboard and pc are set to the same channel, if you are using some software such as cubase there should be midi in and out indicators to denote when a signal is sent and received by the pc.
other things to look out for are getting the in and out leads the wrong way round, not having drivers installed for the midi part of your soundcard, not having it enabled on the card (i think it was under 'mimo' settings, it's been about 5 years since i put my studio in storage).

before my comp went into a sulk i used to have a tabs button on the search bar so i could have multiple pages open on one screen at a time. since having to reload windows xp the function has gone but i don't know why and i can't find it. does anyone know how i get it back? it's very frustating having loads of single pages at the bottom of the screen.
thanks
whips

do you mean in your browser?
if so you have an older version of Internet Explorer, so either get the latest version or make the smart choice and get Firefox instead wink

What he said!
But if you've re-installed XP you need to make sure you go out and get any Windows updates too. It will probably update IE for you too.
Do try Firefox again, It's so much better than Internet Explorer. It comes with loads of great "Add ons" too. Once you've tried it, you will never go back to Internet Explorer again.
This has turned into a pro firefox thread over the months but rightly so......it's far superior and more reliable smile

feckin ecstatic....
I thought that it would be a faff to set up the i-pod thingie.. .then I had to do something as my p.c. is feckin around and I want to listen to my new CDS that I got for my burfday. anyhoo... installed it all and it is merrily transferring everything across. I am sooooo happy.
Reet now, my p.c.
It is getting over hot and stopping everytime it loads up.
I have started it happily in safe mode and it loves it. I have virus checked and all that mallarkey. I have also vaccummed all the dust (and there was a lot) and it worked for a whole hour. It is now back to the beginning again where it crashes and then attempts to restart and even before the password screen (I have one to prevent my son seeing his mum's 'photo's' redface ) it crashes....
I assume it is overheating. Can I fix that easily ? if so what do I do ?

Many things can cause this.
The PSU may be unstable and need replacing.
Check all fans are working.
Thermal transfer compund on the processor may have dried up.
Memory or power lead may not be seated correctly.
etc
also if you can get into safe mode the following may help:
It may be a fatal error that is causing the computer to restart. Dll problem can occur when removing programs. You can maybe stop the restart problem by changing your system features to restrict automatic startup when your computer's having a problem after that check out the event viewer for the cause. Here is how:
Use System Failure Settings to Stop Automatic Restarts.
1. Click Start and Open the Control Panel
2. Go to System and Maintenance, Click on System.
3. Select Advanced System Settings and choose Advance tab.
4. Under Startup and Recovery, click on Settings.
5. Under System failure uncheck Automatically restart.
Its a start.... lol

Sounds like the fan that cools the processor is broken or about to break.
If your computer is recently new then I'd suggest taking it back and tell them you want it fixing...if it's older :
If you can find out which processor it is, you should be able to get a replacement. I won't be able to tell you how to remove the old one and replace it without knowing which one it is, although most fans are easy to replace.
To find out what processor you have do the following if you have Vista (XP should be similar if not the same....):
Go to the start button (bottom left)
Select "System and maintenance" and then "System"
The screen should then tell you what processor you have (eg - mine is a Intel Celeron 530 @ )
The important bit is the NAME of the processor, mainly certain processors HAVE to have a certain type of fan to cool it.
If you have a local computer shop, take the information in and ask them for a price (I can't help you with how much you should expect to pay again as I don't know what you have sad ) DO try to avoid places such as PC world as they take your soul as payment.
The removal of the casing is again dependant on what you have, but should be straight forward....however, if in doubt get a local expert (or geek) to help you.
Hope that helps biggrin
EDIT:
Crashminx got there first! lol

Well sounds bad - obviously its still doing something - have you tried putting the manufacturers CD in to start it from there?
Alternatively - check the hard drive cable is correctly seated - I have known some to come loose.
To see if the drive is stuffed I would recommend a boot stick with a basic linux OS on to run it - see the UBUNTU website. If you cant even see a BIOS boot screen then it may be really bad.
Either way if you do end up discarding it take the hard drive out (should remove from the lappy underside) before and you may be able to recover the data by getting a drive caddy with USB connectivity for the 2.5" HDD
Anyone else???

oh share ....
I want to give my son all my tunes .. but can't upload two i-pods onto one -i-tunes... and can't figure out what to do..

The latest version of iTunes allows network sharing - if your sons computer and yours are on the same router, you can share all tunes between PC's
