Usual things first, clear cookies, check firewall isn't blocking it but before that try pressing F5 on your keyboard (page refesh), i have a similar problem on another site
Quote by H-x
I'm having Facebook issues! The site loads, my home page and profile are visable as is my mail, but when I go to look at other people's profiles I just get a blank page with the word 'done' in the bottom left of the window - is it a connection issue? I don't know where to start looking for the problem.

In edit: I'm on wifi braodband, use IE and XP

I'll lay odds the middle one is the guilty party. To quote the technical thread mantra, try Firefox (preferably v3 now that it's out of beta) it's free and it's much, much better than IE (a lot faster to render too).
Mantra lol like it ...... i agree Peanut ....
Cheers Gary
It's not a problem with your pc... It's a problem with Facebook.... I have been experiencing the same over the last few days, and so have other people who have been using the site.... There's not much you can do I'm afraid! It's driving me bananas.....
confused
I'm having different probs with Facebook- Mar wrote me what I'm sure was a lovely testimonial which vanished before I could read it. evil And I'm sure it was via Facebook Texas Hold 'em the PC caught it's fatal virus. The bloody place has more bugs than a hospital ward.
Virus shldnt affect your reading :P Wine/vodka/lager - yes ;)
Dnt use portal like FB - too big traffic and too many
Add friends, add pics, but use mails/msn/other to contact - small advice

Ok, tried a few things mentioned (thanks for your input people) The same thing happens on Firefox, refreshing the page on either program does nothing, except once with firefox I got a page of code - refreshed again and got back to the empty page. I don't understand why it's only on certain parts of the site, ie profiles - the rest of it seems to work fine.

Ah, now the "page of code" bit gives a clue that the problem is either with the server (most likely) or that data is getting lost between you and the server (much less likely).
Facebook coding is very, very flaky mainly because of the amount of javascript and Ajax code that is being used (this is why I recommended Firefox, as IE isn't all that Ajax compliant).
For you to receive a page of code it means that the server has only sent part of the page code. The first part contains information on how the browser should render the code.
I can't say that I've experienced the same problem whilst on Facebook, but that could just be because I don't use it very much or very deeply.
Another alternate theory could be that the profile you are trying to load contains lots of those bloody stupid 'applications' and either the quantity or maybe one of them is flaky is what's causing the server to barf.
The odds are though that it's a problem that you personally can't do anything about, other than the odd epithet and a desire for a glass of wine.
i rebooted my laptop and lost all my pictures on the memory how do i recover them?

Hi.....
Right my money is on a virus causin this prob....try spybot search and destroy or something similar just in case your anti-virus missed something....also if it was mine I would reformat....after backin up your files to a memory stick first....then after the format scan your memory stick for viruses b4 restorin your files.....best of luck...
Gary xxxx

Thanks Gary, problem now sorted. I knew it was an virus or anything like that (it isnt even conected to the internet) and I do have AVG/Spybot etc installed just incase I move anything from my PC to his.
I found the problem using WinDirStat. It seems one of the programme he uses for his video editing was creating shadow files of everything he did, so we now have 400gb free and all 50+ versions of a wedding video he did a couple of weeks back have been deleted lol
Thanks everyone

I think it might also be karma, the world telling me not to be so damned nosey biggrin
D'you mean the desire for a glass of wine shouldn't be ever present? Oh dear.

It depends on what you mean by memory? If you mean they were stored on your hard drive then that's something totally different to "memory". Anything actually in memory when you reboot is lost.
If the images are on your hard drive and disappeared after a reboot then that's something else entirely. I'm going with the latter.
To answer this effectively a bit of info is required. When you say "lost", what do you actually mean? Were they in a specific folder and now the folder is empty, or the folder has disappeared. Also what application were you using to see the list of images and is that what is telling you that they are no longer there?
When you rebooted what were you doing, ie what applications were open and was it a clean boot, i.e. did the computer shut itself down or did it hang and you switched off?
Why does my scrolly mouse thing stop scrolling? redface
It does everything else, but periodically the scrolly wheely thing just stops working. How come?
Hope this is techy enough for this thread :giggle:

I know this might sound really obvious, but can you clarify what you mean by "rebooted"? It's very common for people to get the terminology mixed up.
Do you mean you switched it off and back on again?
Or do you mean you re-installed the operating system/reset back to factory settings?
The first should have no effect on stored data, but the latter would most likely splat anything you had saved.
In edit: just saw your other post so just ignore me. redface

Is it a rubber wheely thing? I had one of those that did the same thing. When it got warm the rubber sleeve can expand and starts to slip on the plastic wheel underneath. You can sometimes take it apart and give it a clean, but it's likely to start playing up again.
Nope, the scrolly mousy thing is a hard plastic thing. You can feel it sort of ratcheting as it moves so I'm sure its not just slipping. It rights itself when I reboot, but I'd like to avoid having to do that by figuring out why it does it.
After a couple of years of working directly with IT stuff from a non-techie background though, I'm learning that there are no easy answers and often reboot is the only answer for some of these quaint little foibles.
I use Irfanview as my default picture viewer, and have been trying to download a picture of me wearing a hat for my avatar, but having no luck.. it says "do not support file" yet when I uploaded one of my boob it worked!
Any ideas? It's and 640x480 .. would appreciate any help.. I have a feeling I might have to disable Irfanview...
Thanks all!!! biggrin
A funny thing has happened to a couple of my word docs.
They appear as a faint ghost image in the list of docs, the first word of the title is starting with a small squiggle followed by a $ sign and although they are word docs, when I try and open them I'm told to "select the encoding that makes your document readable" if I open the doc all I get is my name and a bunch of small square boxes.
any ideas?

Do a printscreen, paste the image into a picture editing programme - irfanview is good and free, crop to size and save as a jpg.

You didn't say what make of mouse it was or if it was USB or PS2, but it sounds like it may possibly be a driver issue if it clears up with a reboot. It could also possibly be an electro-mechanical problem with the mouse itself. The mouse gets its power from the computer so doing a reboot means you are also rebooting the mouse so to speak.

Ah, now that sounds like a different ballgame altogether. Now there are two different sorts of restores with windows. There's a system restore point which sort of takes the operating back in time to whichever restore point you select. This only affects executable programs and their settings.
The second system restore is the one I think you've done. If this is the case then I'm afraid you've lost everything (unless you are prepared to pay for a professional data retrieval service).
The system restore I think you've done is when you take the system right back to the original factory settings, ie it nukes everything on the hard drive and reinstalls a brand new operating system installation.
From the sounds of it you've selected option B and it's trashed everything, including your photos. I know this is too late, but should this happen again, always backup any data you want to keep before doing anything like this. Sorry, but I think the technical term on this issue is 'you're boned'!

I'm presuming you mean "upload" rather than download, ie you want to send the image from your computer to SH's server?
If this is the case then you have to be very specific in how you save the file. It can only be a gif file or a non-progressive jpg file. It can't be a png file.
The code dealing with the upload is most likely using either what's called GD2 or ImageMagick to process the uploaded file so it can add the watermark amongst other things. As such the possible image format seems to be very strictly limited so as to aid the necessary coding.
In the Irfanview save dialogue (not the "save as") make sure that the jpg option (over to the right) "save as progressive JPG" is unticked.

Files that show as greyed out in Windows Explorer are usually hidden files that are being displayed when you have the options set to "show hidden files".
Also, files that start with a tilde (~) and some other random non-alphanumeric character are usually temp files that the application opens as a temporary backup. This is how the restore a document when you've crashed works.
The other possibility is that you are trying to open the 'lock' file, which is what's called a 'semaphore' file that when it exists tells any other users who try to edit the document to which the semaphore file relates that the file is already open and can't be edited. Normally these files have a different extension to .doc.

No need to ignore you, what you said seems to be the case the way I read Phucker's follow-up post.

Do a printscreen, paste the image into a picture editing programme - irfanview is good and free, crop to size and save as a jpg.
Alternatively have you tried right-clicking the image in the document, choosing "copy" then pasting it into Irfanview. No need to do any cropping then.

Ah, now therein lies the question, which unfortunately depends on which version of Word you are using, which version of Word created the document and what format it's in.
I know how to do it in Office 2007, but I've never had to do it in previous versions so I can't be of too much help. What I do recommend is using the help facility in Word (hit F1) and search for either "recover" or "recover document". This should give you a step by step on how to do it.
