now I am a man of a certain age ( 40something) recently I have noticed that I seem to be shrinking !!!yes shrinking..My trousers seem to be trying hard to trip me up by gathering under my heels, every one seems to be towering above me especially my oldest son and his friends.....I continue to do my sport and excercise generally but do you know part of the way through things I start to feel " bollocks to this I really can`t be arsed"......
WHAT IS GOING ON WITH ME?????????????
What did you say, shorty?
Once upon a time, I thought I was 5'6" cos my mum was adamant she was 5'6" and we were the same height.
I was measured by the doctor or midwife when I was pregnant and I was 5'5". Fair enough, half an inch is nothing.
9 years later my mum is titchy and the only way I've grown is in width.
You're getting ooooolllld! lol
GEE thanks that really helped my self esteem

it just looks that way biggrin
I know how you feel, Rob! I'm now the shortest in our household. I'm 5'5", daughter is 5'6", son is 6'1" and Mr FB is 6'2". They tease me mercilessly, especially my son. lol
Beyond the age of 30, we start to shrink. Live to the ripe old age of 142, and you can come & live in my garden as a Gnome if you like dunno
Obviously kids are taller now than they used to be in the good old days, when at 6foot I could stride round my secondary school towering over all I surveyed biggrin (except for the boy who was 6'-1" - I still hate him grrr)
The problem is that as you get older the gaps between the vertebrae in your spine reduces (gravity dunno ). I see loads of old people through work and the number that are curled over and nearly hump backed is alarming.
You need to do an exercise that stretches your spine. Try a yoga style exercise. :D.

You don't say what your height is, or was, but maybe you'll be grateful that you won't any longer be hitting your head on low ceilings, doorframes etc. smile

I bought a pressie back from Greece for my gay male mate- it was schnapps, contained in a man-with-big-erect-willy shaped bottle.
I took it out of the box to show him, and.......
you've guessed it! surprisedops:
Considering my sig it did make me chuckle though! lol

Almost Keeno!
Ok in best laymans terms as poss-
What actually happens is the 'fluidy' substance that fills the discs in between your vertebrae (the discs fill the gaps between your vertebrae and are work like shock absorbers) which is like a hydrated gel stuff, 'drys up' to a certain extent, so the disc 'shrinks' and the vertebrae get closer together.
As you get older you bone density lessens, more people develop osteoporosis and all these combined make you shorter!
No amount of stretching can change that! (Although exercise is the best thing to maintain your joints as you get older)
The 'hump back' is a sign of osteoporosis- thinning of the bones, once you're past 25 there ain't much you can do to improve your bone density, apart from making sure you exercise, eat healthily and look after your posture with proper seating, bedding, working conditions and by doing postural exercises etc
When you're pregnant, changes to your hormones allow your ligaments to loosen, and your posture alters, giving most people a bigger curve in the lower back, and making you appear shorter!
Hope this makes sense!!

I'm no expert on this and I am only repeating what I understand of what I have been taught through tai chi.
If you work joints and I assume the discs between vertebrae are included doesn't the body increase the amount of fluid in the joints?
Personally I have increased in height by 1/2" since starting doing tai chi 15 years ago. Surely not a late growing spurt. cool

that could be explained by having measured yourself at different times of the day as most people shrink by about half an inch during the course of the day due to good old gravity.... biggrin SO if you measure yourself in the morning you are taller than if you do it in the evening. :D

 yup!
Also, the hydration of your discs varies as the day goes on....
What you may be noticing is an improvement in your posture through strengthening your core stability muscles, giving you better support at your back, and perhaps less of a 'slumped, slouched' posture and thus that extra inch.
Unfortunately you can't do much to change the hydration of the disc fluid itself as you get older, only very slight changes, it's just one of those things like grey hairs on the outside- you can't do anything to stop them! ;-)
oh gawd... not only am Igoing grey >ahem: distinguished< It sounds as if I'm drying up and blowing away also!
