Well, I see that Tony Blair has been slagging off the 'Sixties, just as his predecessor, the Wicked Witch of the West did. He 's claimed that the liberal attitudes associated with that decade are to blame for current of "antisocial" behaviour and crime
Of course, the term "antisocial" is largely subjective and methods of recording and measuring crime are constantly changing, rendering them meaningless for purposes of comparison. Anyway, enough of me rant.......
For many people the 'Sixties were the best thing that ever happened.
As I was born in the late 'Fifties, I have pretty clear memories of the 'Sixties.
Although I grew up in a repressed society in provincial Ireland, at least a few draughts of the winds of change reached our shores, mostly through the media of music and television. As a ten-rear-old in 1968 I was aware of the student riots in Paris. Protests against the Vitnam war are an abiding image. Anti-apartheid demonstrations were common. My social and political outlook was moulded by events in that decade. On the whole they were positive. Then there was the music. My personal opinion is that there has never been anything like it before or since. Everything was radical about the 'Sixties.
Other people might have different views on that particular decade. Perhaps many did not welcome the changes. Perhaps some people feel that the whole 'Sixties thing is over-hyped anyway; that the reality was not actually as things are often portrayed in various media. Or it could be that while some people recognise that things changed for the better in that decade, their personal experiences may not have been happy ones.
And that's just one decade.
What is your favourite decade. And why ?
Maybe you preferred the music and fashions of the 'fifties.
Or you might have loved the cobwebs that werer blown away by punk music in the 'seventies (only for new cobwebs to be woven in their place ?)
Then again you might associate this decade with industrial conflict, petrol rationing,stupid fashion.
Perhaps you found financial success in the 'eighties. You may have benefitted from "the right to buy" . Or maybe you loathed the rampant greed of that decade.
Your opinion of any particular decade may be influenced more by personal experience than by what occurred socially, politiacally or in music,etc.
You may have realised a personal dream or achieved a goal in a certain decade that makes it special for you. Conversely you may have experienced a reversal of fortune that mars your memories.
Is there a decade of which you can say "You've never had it so good"
Perhaps you feel that categorising things by decades is artificial; that events can not be neatly boxed into time frames that commence on January 1st in a year that has a zero on the end and finishes on December 31 nine years later.

It's probably a good idea to keep your contibutions on this topic to times that are in your own living memory.
I think it is safe to say that we are talking about the post-war era here.
I wonder if we'll suddenly discover scores of centenarian swingers on this site now who'll chip in with their WW1 experiences or people who'll be singing the praises of the 1940s, the Welfare State and all that.
And wow, weren't the 1420s brilliant.

The 70's .. I was too young to remember too much about .... (born 1972)
The 80's .... fond memories of being a teenage, but can't say I embraced the moment too much as again still too young.
The 90's .... spent most of it in an abusive relationship, lack of confidence, finally began to sort my life out towards the end ...so can't say that I particularly enjoyed the 90's/
The 00's ... happy in relationship, but now have ties and responsibilites in the form of two young children, have a fair bit of freedom, sexually, none financially for a few years yet, career wise seems to be on track. I'm beginning to relax and enjoy life........ so thus far I have to say the 2000's.
However, i'm still a young slip of a girl and so who knows what the future holds .. I'm wise enough to know my life isn't yet over :twisted:

80s - I wore pink clothes when it was ok for straight blokes to wear pink clothes. I dyed my hair, I said the "L" word too often, I drank too much, I joined the company I still work for, and I thought I was immortal. The music was shite.
90s - The music got better, nothing else did.
00s - It'll be a great decade once we kill the Prime Minister.

Tony Blairs' comments about anti-social behavior being attributed to the liberal attitudes of the 1960s is a cheap attempt at trying to gain tory votes before the next general election. Todays anti-social problems lie more with the attitudes and selfishness of the 1980s when Thatcher declared there was "no such thing as society".
Society began to change in the UK in 1960s with the advent of consumerisim and peoples' perception of themseves as "consumers" or as "individuals" buying into off the peg "lifestyles". This preciptiated a fragmentation of the society that had existed pre-1960s and so people lost a sense of cohesivness within society itself. The "one-vision" of society had in effect fragmented into a whole series of macro societies or tribes (SH being one of them for example). Peoples perception of their responsiblity to their local communities dwindled as their alleigance to their adopted tribes increased. This is why anti-social behavoir has proliferated because certain people no longer see themselves as being a part of a larger picture. They only think of "the BIG - I AM!"
Now I'm not saying there is anything wrong with people identifying with other people and making connections. I think the internet has been of benefit is reorganizing society and bringing likeminded people together. What I am saying is that for simple minded conservative folk, they associate all the rapid changes that took place in the 1960s as the beggining of the decline and blame it on the liberals and hippies. What they convieniently forget is that these changes were brought about largely by commercial concerns i.e. their fellow capitalist friends.

It would definately have to be the 90's for remember the 70's much(i was only 6 when it ended).The 80's werent bad but i was still quite young,even though some of the best music came from this decade(and im not talking cheesy pop either).
The 90's hold a lot of fond memories for me,my student days,the Manchester music scene,independence,popping my cherry, and of course the best thing of all,meeting and marrying my wonderful wife Clare,with whom we had our first daughter. :D
The new millenium has been quite good so far,but its still to early to judge that one.

70's.... born, vague recollections of walking out of my sisters nursery because i didnt want to stay, music....what was that!!?!
80's..... school - boring,
family became very religious- restrictive, moved home and changed schools in summer just before 5th year so had to do 2 years work in 6 months - whose idea was that!?!?!?, found music!! Depece Mode, The Cure, big on indie. :bounce: 90's .... Found rock/metal - Iron Maiden, Metalica, Guns & Roses, Rammstein - bring it on!!

Lost religion, well actually abandoned religion would be more acurate - freedom!! Got divorced - more freedom, totally wasted on 25th birthday but still have the suit i brought for the occasion (ok i can't actually get in it but what the hell lol). My favourite decade , the 70s , I just had a great time , and got away with some stuff that looking back on it I cant believe I did , or even where I got some of the ideas from !
