The Good Old Days?

I've just been watching Blithe Spirit, the old Coward classic and after seeing Brief Encounter recently it's got me to wondering what it would have been like to live in middle class England in the 30s & 40s.
I know these movies aren't typical of the majority of the population at the time but wouldn't it be nice to go back to a time when everyone was so terribly polite, you dressed for dinner and never left the house without a hat biggrin

Is there a time in history you'd like to have a brief glimpse at?

You know I like now. At no other time would I still have full use of my hand. No other time that I could sit here a chat with you Sassy or the other SHers.
I would like to see the country united, in a common goal, common duty... but when was that, never.

I would go back to the victorian era.
Nice strict rules. Nice tight laced clothing. Nice petticoats.
Oh to be the Mistress of the House, giving out orders and cracking the whip or the maid servant whose Master visits her in the middle of the night (not to mention what the maids would do together............oh dear those switchyBDSM undertones keep sneaking through dont they.

It so depends on income.
I'll take the 1830's (just think Pride and Prejudice) with an income numerically the same as I'm on now. I'd give Darcy a fun for his/my money.
Apart from that - any time would have to have plumbing, contraceptives and antibiotics. Oh and chocolate - so a bit limited. :giggle:
