Printing.
It allowed political and religious comment to be disseminated to the masses. The activists printed the Bible and their political pamphlets in English. It was the first time 'people' had been able to access that level of information. It lead to reading/writing among the common people, an understanding of the political situation, the vote (slowly).
People learned to read by studying a single book (often the Bible) by candle-light after working 12 hours a day.
Before then the language of religion, law and science was Latin - a dead language that excluded 95% or more of the population. Discussions between intellectuals about the meaning of the Christian teachings, choices of belief and possible heresy were in the exclusive realm of the few Latin writers. As soon as these arguments hit the streets in the local language (not just English - Germany was hugely affected by this process) people started making choices. Some of these choices got them burned at the stake - but it was the beginning of the end for the 'do as I say - you wouldn't understand' brigade. The point is they were making CHOICES.
Printing made political and religious debate and mass education possible, and education even now, is often the difference between having choices in life and not.
Bless you Guthenburg and Martin Luther. Heroes of the first water biggrin:D:D:D:D
