Yep, have to say despite my reservations, sticking it to the French did evoke a surge of national pride. wink

about to go to france for 2 to 3 months
they will seriously pissed off, i need to make sure my accent is good otherwise i could get a lot ot french spittle in my dinners sad
amazing thing is we had no intention of mounting a bid because our obvious candidates, manchester, sheffield & birmingham would not have a pray against madrid, ny, & paris but jacque rogge convinced us to put london forward against our own will
i have to say that as a serious lover of cross country and the trade unions, steve ovett & the old labour party are my natural home
BUT

seb coe was amazing these last 18 months since we got shot of the yank woman
biggrin :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

we'll have to agree to disagree, otherwise this could go on longer than the olympic bid itself.....my final thoughts ... yes i do encourage my daughter to do sports but if there was an accident whilst doing so, i'd like to know there was the facilities available to help with that and recovery.....not as some cases recently highlighted that people have waited days for scanners, x-rays..months for operations and medicines and years in some cases for other treatments....

All I have to say to you is:
banghead :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Oh... and that's a personal comment by the way. What a narrow tunnel vision you have. Go read about healthy living, sport being the gateway for increased physical health..
actually I don't want to say any more cos you've just annoyed me so much.
mad :x
If you don't understand the way that money is raised and spent in the UK then please don't comment on the spending of it. Use you vote next time instead!

see... told you I'd rant.
rolleyes
why do you presume i am narrow minded, and why have you now decided to make this personal and attack me....i would rather state my opinion and let others do the same, i have not disregarded or attacked anyones opinion, i may disagree with them but have NOT attacked anyone on a personal basis, called them shortsighted or narrowminded for stating an opinion....
I don't presume - your comments made it obvious.
PS in edit... I didn't say you were narrow minded, I said what narrow tunnel vision you had. Not the same thing at all.

okay.. so jags said it a bit stronger than i would have done... smile but in the lottery legistlation it specifically states that you cannot use the money for stuff such as hospitals, police ect... as it could then been seen as a stealth tax....
so what do you use the money on?? someone will correct me if i am wrong but a quarter of the money from the lottery goes in the fun for "sport" anyway......so why not use that money to promote sport, and i can't think of anything any better than getting the olympics..
so like I and other have said... if you don't like it and don't want to support it, then don't buy a lottery ticket... simple as...
can i pick you up on something else that you also said earlier about people "staying home and watching it on TV anyway"
at the moment there are a conservative estimate of about 50,000 british and irish lions rugby fans in new zealand.....
if england reach the world cup in germany next year... they reckon approx 100,000 fans may go out for every game, regardless of if they have tickets or not....
english fans had the largest support of any visiting fans in portugal last summer...
british fans had the largest support of any visitings fans in athens last summer....
i would like to say a huge thank you to manchester for the commonwealth games... for showing that we could run a succesful major sporting event
not everyone does sit on theiir backsides mate....

fact is the revenue that will be generated now that we have won the games....in tourism, and such like will outbid the cost of the games two fold. also we as a country will be left with excellant sporting facilities for the young people of tomorrow. And not least we have stuck two fingers up to Jacques Chirac !!
For gods sake lets congratulate ourselves.....its not often we win.

Hear! Hear! ......... My sentiments exactly.... why should we portray ourselves as a 'poor' nation who cannot afford to have the world's best athletes competing in one of the world's greatest cities.
The NHS etc is another problem that needs addressing at other times by our 'leaders' ... but we shouldn't deny ourselves a great sporting event and the opportunity to show the world what we are capable of simply because we need another hospital or two.

fine... shame really....
if you look rationally at it...
the tax payer is only going to end up paying 10% of the costs....
which ends up at an average of 20 pounds a year onto council tax....
if you break that down, that is 38p a week.......i went and bought a tin of heinz baked beans today... cost 38p!!! smile :)
if someone said to you "if am going to improve where you live and i am going to pay 90% of it, you are going to pay 10" you'd snap their arm off
i never turned this into a personal arguement.... i and some other have rationally told you why what you wanted couldn't be done thru these methods.....
I am really not interested in the Olympics, the last one passed me by completely and I didn't watch a single minute of it. But Tonysb09, c'mon ! It isn't an "either or" situation when you are talking about the cash to be used to pay for it...
You want better things for this country and specifically your kid, as you repeatedly state. So the improvements in infrastructure, transport and sporting facilities around one of the more deprived areas of this country wont improve the lives of a vast number of people in that area, including for somebody elses kids?
I was born in east London and lived a mile or so away from Stratford, it's mostly a shit hole, and the best thing to happen to it in recent history was the Luftwaffe. But this is going to transform not only the area, but people's lives too...
I probably wont watch any of the London Olympics, and I would have prefered it to have been more UK based than London-centric... but WTF.
And we stuck it up the frogs....... which is always cause for sheer joy. :P
one only has to cast ones mind back to Euro 1996. The buzz in the whole country was amazing, and look at what the england team has become since then, we are gradually becoming a force once more.
If the Olympics has the same effect then i say it can only be a good thing. Living near Manchester it was fantastic having the commonwealth games up here. I cant wait for the olympics now.
Anybody who thinks the olympics in London is a good idea must be stupid. Britain will be humiliated in front of the whole world. In many ways it is very unfair on the athletes they should be allowed to concentrate on their performance instead they will have to worry about whether their train will be on time or if their event will be postponed because of rain.
The games will cost every London tax payer 270 pounds. Surely it should be the people living in Paris that should be jumping for joy.

I think you'll find they would prefer to hop for joy..... being amphibious.
Quote from the London2012 site:

The UK's Games
London 2012 would be a sporting celebration for the whole country.
The football tournament would take the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to every part of the country.
The existing football stadia at Hampden Park, the Millennium Stadium, Villa Park, Old Trafford and St James' Park would all host matches, with the final being played at the new Wembley.
The world-class facilities at Weymouth and Portland in Dorset would host the Sailing events.
But it would be more than just the Games action which would go nationwide.
In the run up to the Games, sport facilities all over the UK would host training camps and preparation events to help athletes from all over the world acclimatise.
And a series of international sports events would be scheduled to provide athletes and organisers with the experience of hosting major events.
The benefits to the UK would go far beyond the sporting arena. Tourism would receive a boost right across the UK, not just during the Games, but for years before and afterwards as well.
Australia reported an additional visitors due to the 2000 Games visitors who ventured far beyond Sydney to explore the whole country.
Thousands of local businesses and suppliers across the country would also profit from a London Games, providing everything from construction to catering facilities.
An army of 70,000 volunteers would be required to help run the Games, providing opportunities for people from all over the UK and from all walks of life to play their part.

London is the host city but it's being spread out. Seems good to me.
Any more areas for debate??? (remember it's personal)
lol
Yeah..... what's happening with the winter Olympics? Winters have turned manky and it's almost impossible to russle up a decent slush ball lately and there hasn't been enough snow to go "bin-bagging" in years.... surely we aren't hosting the winter olympics too? If not...where will they be?
(and if we are hosting them, will there be no spectators due to all the trains stopping due to snow on the line?)

I was hoping we wouldn't get it, but now that we have, I think it's up to everyone to support it, or at least not oppose it because it IS going to happen. I expect to be directly involved in a professional capacity and I intend to do my bit as well as I possibly can. The debate is over, it's pride at stake now and we need to pull together.

No Postie... we're NOT hosting the Winter Games. London isn't known for it's snowfall. The Winter Games are decided at a different time. The next one is in Torino Italy in Feb 2006.
Happy to help!

not quite true.... what will happen is that on council tax bills in the london boroughs they will have "olympic levy" on them,
for the average person (band d) it will be 20 pounds per year for 7 years.... obviously it can go up or down dependant on which band you are in....
so the average will be 140 pounds.... half of what you quote...

There aren't many places where you can stage a winter Games, so I'm pretty sure they don't have to be in the same place as the summer Games. I think Aviemore/Inverness is about the only place in Britain that might possibly be able to do it given enough preparation, but even up there a mild winter would make it impossible.
