Thought you'd never hear her name mentioned on a swingers website...
I have no Idea if this is now in the right place... so if it isn't then please move it....
okay... I think I must be one of the last people to see the proformance of susan boyle on "britain's got talent" (Dr Who was on the other side and i needed my fix of that)
It was my american cousins who persuaded me to see it
if you haven't seen it then I fully encourage you to....
anyway the point or question I want to bring up is are we as a society now this judgemental in all forms? are we losing out on so much talent in general (just for example, workwise) because people have made there minds up in the 1st 30 seconds?
that everybody had made there minds up about people before she even started to sing was sad to see... to see she was being mocked for even daring to go on the stage was worse......
I think that britain got embarrassed on saturday night, and I am loving the fact that this has now sparked general conversating about the way people see others, and I hope that even for a little while if it has improved the situation, then her singing will be worth it......
That's the first time I have seen this. Not bad!
Yes you are right too many time people are discarded, for just their looks or, one part of what they are.
I don't watch that sort of show, this is the first time I have heard of her.
If she doesn't get a performing career after seeing what I have just seen, then there really is no justice, she really does have a fantastic singing voice.
You are right about people being judged quickly by appearance. We all do it .
I think it is nice to be proven wrong and that shows like Britains got talent give the underdog a chance.
Lets hope that it does make employers and interviewers stop and think about it too.
Well it is a freak show that Phineas T Barnum would have been proud of. I think Simon Cowell should pay royalties to his estate.
I can only imagine the excitement at the pre show auditions when this lady turned up. Her category "hideous but not delusional" is the rarest find of all. I imagine even Simon Cowells eyebrow raising was scripted for full comedic pathetic impact. It seems Peers was kept in the dark since his bafflement is far more convincing than Louis Walsh's on Cowells other freak show. Amanda Holden performed her Sharon Osbornesque "give the underdog a chance" role impeccably.
Wasnt there an equally hideous opera singer bloke that won it last year or the year before?
what a fantastic voice, shame on people who judge others by looks alone !!
There is no remit that states to be good at something you have to be good looking.
Good job really, I'm hideous, but am great in bed. However I don't think they'd be too interested in that on Britains Got Talent.
In a way though, I am baffled why people are beating themselves up about being "judgemental" about this lady. Let's face it, these shows are as popular not for the great acts, but the utterly naff ones too. Every week we see a "Susan Boyle" or "Paul Potts" (I would change that name mate to be honest... Especially if you get popular in the Far East) come on stage professing they want to be the next Placido Domingo or Maria Callas and they start singing and it sounds like a toilet with blocked plumbing, or a goose being strangled by a flatulent Orangutan. What makes these people special is they are rare, that should be celebrated, but we shouldn't then think every complete f-wit (and there are many) who appear on these shows thinking they have a talent of some form, are not entirely delusional, or just have a wonderful sense of humour and are in their own ironic way, taking the p*ss out of Cowell and his cronies and the British public, for 2 minutes of laughable exposure and a week or so of notoriety, in the hope that they may get £20 extra a night at their local British Legion.
As for Susan, I love stories like hers and Paul Potts, I think it goes to show that talent transcends merely how you look, that if you can be bothered to look beyond the "Has the looks for TV" mentality that you can find something special. When you think of Potts or Susan and their talent, and then weigh that up with how much Posh Spice earned for her "musical ability" it seems unfair doesn't it?
But then again, in a society hung up on looks and first impressions, little else can be expected. So why beat yourself up about it? The exception doesn't prove the rule wrong, usually it just proves the rule correct in the first place.
You watch, next week, there will be another potential Susan Boyle... and she will sound like An Elkhound being put through a mangle. Yin and Yang folks.
What would looks matter when you are listening to their music on the radio?
I saw her on youtube after reading about her in the paper, i dont own a telly you see, and what a suprise  she has a fantastic voice, and i must say it moved me to tears too, yes she looks a little quirky but not every woman is a super model, and what has looks really to do with talent? have you seen The Pogues? and more bands that i could mention. Good on you Susan for even trying in the first place
The thing is though, she will be given a makeover during the course of the series won't she?
So she'll be allowed to be herself for the first couple of episodes and then it'll be the telly-friendly version after that.
She has a good voice and I hope her talent gets her places.
i have to say i find the whole thing very moving - shows like this show how many people in this country lead lives of quiet desparation - their talents ignored - the question is not her looks so much as she has a talent that would have been totally ignored - makes me think how many other people possess talents that one reason or other never blossom
I don't think she is a beginner. She has an accomplished and controlled voice and her performance showed a good deal of experience. She has put in some time in training her voice. Added to which her age has given her a lot of finish.
She may have appeared like a complete amateur but I think that was part of the act. There have been several very good performers masquerading as amateurs on that show. However it was a surprise because I assumed she would be an amateur as well.
I think the show is cleverly staged and managed. Its showbusiness afterall and needs to be entertaining.
I don't watch these kind of shows, and really don't understand how anybody could want to appear on them and be made a fool off on national television.
I heard about her through the internet and indeed she has a brilliant voice.
as far as these shows go..I believe they're staged from start to finish and that the public that goes to see them "live" should be ashamed for partaking in them... and humiliating the aspiring performers time and again.
only big brother sort of reality shows are worse, because in them there is not even the pretend search for a sparkle of talent or human quality.
that's my 2cent on it.. and I don't care if I come over judgemental and arrogant...these shows just irk me.
I just wanted to add that; with media productions on this scale, there is usually a lot of rehearsal, often requiring the 'audience', to stand by as well, when things are worked out.
There is also a lot of editing of the recordings, which can be cleverly used to create a version of the events in any way desirable.
However the original point is whether or not we as the viewers are being judgemental and quick to make a decision. I tend to agree I am in a lot of cases, because we see so much rather hopeless attempts from the wrong kind of contestants. But thankfully most people do recognise real talent when it comes along, and they show their appreciation accordingly.
Oddly enough, there haven't been many of the winners to survive the process they have gone through. They appear on the show, possibly release a cd and are then just as quickly forgotten about. Making the life of a 'star' very short lived indeed. All of which adds to the ease at which people dimiss unlikely contestants.
i think the fact she looked like she did actually made us look/think twice, or considered her amazing more than we would have if she had come on looking the part, then we would just be saying
ahh a professional who is much like any other.
im not going to feel bad because i watched it and didnt expect her to be able to sing, bacause that is the very nature of these audition shows, they show you the pratts typically.
what pisses me off is when those who probally would have judged then judge the ones who did judge.
bravo if you go through life never making assumptions based on first observations.
we are instinctive animals.
Well, there are shows where people get made up and almost completely rebuilt to knock ten years off their lives. New clothes etc. and they look fine. She looked like the wardrobe department had completely ignored her. So the technology is out there available for anyone to use. But she didn't and I wonder why.
I think she is likely to have the ego to match the talent.
I can't listen to youtube (dial up) is the link the Cry me the River song that she did 10 yrs ago??? Heard that's brill...
I've seen les Mis live (twice) and loved every minute.
Most of the cast are not model-types or fantastically good looking. Some are quite the other way. I don't see any reason why she shouldn't have a proper career if she takes the right steps.
The point is, the pop world isn't the be all and end all of musical careers. In fact, it's one of the least significant musically and has some of the shortest 'careers' in the wide world of musical production.
