From the very first day I posted on this forum I have always tried to give my personal opinion.
My opinion has always been true to the person that I am. I must admit, at first I may have been swayed by the veterans of sh but quickly realised that its my opinion the thread starters are after not just an opinion which mirrors everyone else or an opinion which is not true.
Am I naive in thinking that the majority of forumites do tell the truth/do gives their true opinions confused
I would like to think that they do as I do not really see much point in joining a forum and just writing a load of old cobblers just for the sake of posting :?
If I do not have a personal opinion or am not interested/dont have the experience to reply to a thread then I just dont bother.
What is the point in making things up?
Theres many people here who I have got to know and like from their posts alone, and would love to get to know better and in real life just from enjoying their opinions/posts.
Now im begining to wonder how reliable the forums are for getting to know people, as it seems I was given totally the wrong impression by one or two members, who wooed me with their intelligent well thought out posts/pms and then turned out to be nothing like they portrayed.
Of course, this is the risk we run from just reading a few posts on a pc screen, but I just really dont get the need to post a totally false statement of your opinion. Why bother dunno
Whats your opinion? Truth only please  lol

Whatever I say in the forum or pm is alwaysmy ownopinion and not an opinion which will win me favouritism or friends...
biggrin
What's brought this on Louise? has someone lied to you?
Anyway, from my part, I've always spoke my mind (possibly too much at times), but I feel I've always remained truthful, fair and tried not to discriminate against anyone.
There will always be people who won't agree with your opinion, for me that doesn't matter and as long as you keep an open mind you'll be fine.
My only downfall is that I trust people too much
The internet can be a place of fantasy for some people and treat it as such right up to the point of real life, when they suddenly wake up so to speak.

I think most people will give real opinions but yes some people do post for the sake of posting, which goes with the fantasy bit.
What is the point in making things up?

dunno cause it makes them feel better, why do people lie and cheat on their partners
Now im begining to wonder how reliable the forums are for getting to know people, as it seems I was given totally the wrong impression by one or two members, who wooed me with their intelligent well thought out posts/pms and then turned out to be nothing like they portrayed.

its as reliable as you want it to be, the written word on the net as said earlier is a fantasy for some, reality you can see people face to face and try and judge a character from that, but even then we can easily be duped and get it wrong.
For me I read the posts and take in the bits relevant to me, do I trust everything I read confused: no of course I don’t, but then again I do not trust everything I read in the newspaper. I make and informed decision on what I see and read, some I take with a pinch of salt most I try hope that it’s the real person speaking the truth.
I post in threads which interest me or if I think my opinion on a subject is valid. If I read a thread which either doesn't apply to me ( ie clubs ) then I won't reply.
I will certainly look at everyone's else's thoughts and views, especially on a serious thread but I won't be swayed from my own views unless I thought I was in the wrong.
Some people do hide behind the screen and allow others to see them in a different light to how they really are, that will always happen in forums and chatrooms. As much as you can get the gist of most people online, sometimes your opinion of them can change when you meet them face to face.

Its not exactly someone lying to me. Its more the fact that someone pretends to be a person that they clearly are not when you meet them in real life confused

It can be a downfall at times but id much prefer to be trusting than totally suspicious of everything and everyone but some people seem insistent on making you untrusting.

Hmmm… opinions and the truth?
Well… I may have stated somewhere else in these forums that I consider myself a bit of an idealist…
My opinions my be true to me, though not practical when aired in the light of day.
For this reason, I’m often loath to give said opinions in a forum such as this, for, once given, I don’t think I’d have either the patience or the skills to defend it. >mainly the patience... couldnt be arsed to give explanation etc etc... sounds lazy huh?<
I’ve seen some threads descend into what can only be called stand-off… so *in my opinion* I’d rather steer clear of that…
As has been said by others… I enjoy reading many of the threads on subjects that interest me, but feel my opinion would be of no consequence, especially if I can neither back it up with direct experience, or the facts and figures as researched by a recognised body of experts in the said field!!!
I’m not here for an argument after all… not me… though believe me, those amongst us who can and do express their opinions in a balanced and direct manner I admire greatly… some more than others.
Though I fear *agendas*…
And even stating that I may have stepped over my own *line*… and worry about reproach…

Hiya louise passionkiss
I have spent some time thinking about this one and it is difficult if you scratch deep enough. I am always just me and my opinions are always my own. I dont post to be popular but i dont post to offend either. I post the truth always, but my posting style and how i am in chat will be dependant on my mood at the time. I havent posted much recently because life has been hectic and my mood hasnt been great. I have asked people who have got to know me online if i was what they expected when they met me in real life and the answer's were quite intresting. Yes i am the same person they met online but a few were surprised by my shyness and some were surprised by my outgoing nature  lol
I have met people online that have been just the same in real life and met some that have been very diffrent,my feeling is some people like to project a certain image that they can not keep up in real life and other like to project a image that they think will get them what they want with out being true to themselfs!
Im waffling now arnt i......i guess what im trying to say is you will never fully get a handle on people from forums/chatrooms/online as you rarely get to see all the facets of their personality ect. Some people knowingly or unknowingly hide certain traits which can then in real life give rise to feeling like you have been misled.
Its not all that diffrent from the guy/couple/fem that you click with online cant wait to meet and swing with, then when you meet that click/sparks just not there! Obviously without knowing exactly what you feel you were misled about its difficult to know if i have just been talking bollocks

Surely, We can generally only post our own opinions/beliefs ? Of course, with the vastly wide of array of people here, some posts will be made on a factual basis dunno

People can only speak for themselves with any certainty. For me - I usually either tell the truth, or decline to answer. Any opinions I give are mine and a true reflection of what I happen to be thinking at that point in time.

I think there are a few reasons.
Ranging from at best, the human nature aspect of wanting to "be liked" - to "fit in" - to curry favour, to increase the chances of getting laid; all the way to at worst, because some people are devious by nature.

But let's not yet totally write off the bollox and banter of the place - from a humour point of view.

I'm as guilty as the next of building up "an idea" of someone from their posts and posting style. Be that socially and sexually. I have now a saving grace, in the gorgeous HLB. She's far more "reserved" about people until she meets them in the flesh. Although, in my defence, I very rarely fullymake up my mind about people until I've actually met them.

Thanks Dammie for a great post.
I too believe thats its a great thing that opinions differ. I just dont see the point of offering a opinion when its not your true opinion.

Now then - there's the acid test.
If it did mean me - that would be as okay as if it didn't kiss
All we can really do is be true to ourselves. If we can mangage that - being true to others will just follow as a byproduct wink
I don't post in threads and say what people what to hear just to win them over!...i have a zero tolerance attitude to bullshit...and normally speak my mind on those matters...but i'm like that in the real world...not just on forums!...what you see is what you get!...i am this way after learning the hard way!

Yes, and make them a bit more reserved and maybe sceptical also.
I always only give my opinion I never make stuff up where I can I try and back it up if there is anything to back it up with. Problem was once all I did was give an opinion I think I am a very opionated person. Theres not a lot of give and take in the way I see things. Some would say thats narrow minded some would say its decisive, I dont care its just me biggrin I try not to give so many opinions now I try and join in the fun of the forum a bit more cus I have a wicked sense of humour ... honest I just tend to show it more in the real world than I do online.

i think most of us, whether by accident or design, have a kind of internet persona we try to project. we would like to be perceived as we would like to be, maybe, and that has a bearing on the way we post.
that's not to say it's dishonest, or deliberately misleading, cos the same thing happens in real life too. we all do it, when we meet someone new for example, and put our very best face on cos we want to be liked.
eventually though, people get to know us as we really are, cos you just can't keep a false face in place forever. like in real life, it's just a matter of time.
as for opinions? i think most are sincere at the time they write something. that's not to say they won't have an entirely different opinion on the same question the next time round! ;)

Spoken like a true veteran.
I can add no more to that...

Excellent post Neil. worship
I also think that if you stay around for a long time and read posts here regularly, most of us develop an intuition about whose online personas are genuine and whose are a bit contrived. Generally in the media these days, everyone seems to think they are a comedian, and this gets reflected in the forums as well, where there are people whose online personas make me think they try too hard, some with the same jokes and catch-phrases or words that get rather overworked, and are not as funny or as clever as they think they are. On the other hand there are others who are just effortlessly brilliant and cannot possibly not be genuine.
I suppose there are always likely to be surprises though. dunno
Time to make some confessions.
1
I do not think all parking tickets should be backed up by the death penalty. I know it sometime seems that way when I post. However I do consider England needs more discipline. Confession, I do over egg the argument sometimes. Hanging is not the solution for all offenders.
2
I do not think that all England's woes started it 1066, when a bunch of money grabbing louts came over from Normandy to sponge off us.
3
I sometimes let humour get in the way of a good argument.
4
apart from that I give honest opinions, I think.

If I sign it I have kept humour out.

Sincere I like  whether your opinion on the same matter changes in the near future which is most likely as we gain more experience and information, as long as someone meant it at the time, then thats fine.

I post where i feel like and leave where i don't.
Posting tends to be in the fluffy threads as tbh i just cant be bothered with serious stuff. Though i did do politics a week or two ago lol
If i get a bit steamed by somthing i start to form a reply then end up not posting and let it ride over these days.
Any i do post in i give my thoughts and more often than not i dont post again unless im askes somthing specific.
Mostly my opinions stay the same but some times it may be adjusted.
Thats life things and opinions can change to suit current thinking
