A post my dear Losty over in the current affairs thread got me pondering and mulling over his words and this led onto the essence of this thread....the quote (if i may be so bold as to reproduce) was regarding one of the forums long standing members dear old Kenty

OK so maybe the chatrooms, it could be argued, do not usually present people with high - brow debate and intellectual discourse. What it does do though is have people from all walks of life in it and the fact that they'd take a drink with you is testament enough.
Your a decent guy alright. Maybe your politics are a little right of centre for me but your an irresistable read.
Blimey sounds like hero worship - honestly its not I just think every now and then its good to big up the deserving. Big you up 777

There are loads of different personalities and opinions on here, which is what makes it a fab place to be. Some say they are aware of being disliked.....some I imagine are unaware their posts cause rumbles of annoyance or disquiet
My question is....
if you take a dislike to someone, particularly those you havent met or encountered other than in the forums......do you
avoid reading their posts/threads altogether,
read their posts and comment and try to dispute them and wind them up for your own fun and amusement
actively look forward to their threads to see what they are saying now
read but refuse to comment on their posts by way of a silent protest (a kind of sending to coventry)
I must admit there isnt anyone I actively dislike on these forums, but I do look forward to the more coulourful musings of certain posters, to see what they are saying and how the forum reacts as a whole.
Its always nice to see new blood in here, as some (and a name or two springs to mind) seem to burst in with the intention of creating as much furore as possible with their inflamatory comments, then disappear as quickly as a snowdrift in august!

There has only been one posting that I have considered so bad that I dislike the person before meeting them.
However that will not stop me reading there posts and agreeing or disagreeing as I feel appropriate and if I have facts behind me then I will comment.
SH forums, as will most places are a combination of playground rules and attitudes with adult reasoning and behavour, as you have said this makes for lively and generally good humoured debate.

It only takes one bigotted comment for me to know that I dislike someone without having met them; I usually ignore it, however, operating on the principle that when a wise person argues with a fool you can't tell which is which!

And then there are some posters who you just know you'd get on with famously were you ever to meet.

Couldn't agree more. I think I'd go along with that. Just one bigotted statement would turn me off someone straight away. Now a conundrum : What if some one uses irony to expose bigotry? i don't know how I'd resolve it.

I'd say there is no one i particularly dislike in forum. there are posters that only ever, and i mean only ever, post when they can ridicule disparage and generally just be negative to others posts its just the easiest unimaginative thing to do and I consider that its possibly due to them lacking something in there lives. With these I just wish them a little inner peace.
For the most part these forums are where good people come and share themselves with others. Thats precious in some ways. OK it is cyber world but it, and everyone in it, does matter.

Lord no ! There are people who I can be fairly certain I would never agree with, but that isnt the same as disliking someone - in fact there is where the confusion perhaps most often occurs. People without the capacity for informed argument very often mistake debate for aggression and disagreement for disagreeableness . On the whole I get the feeling as far a Kenty goes he and I would argue til the cows came home and then go to the bar for a livener, as far as telling people you think you would get on with thats much easier - and this post being about a guy like Losty is a case in point. I think youd be hard pushed to find a forumite that didnt feel that way about him.
