i read this phrase alot on this forum but .what does tongue in cheek really mean?,Can you tongue in cheek with a strangeR?are some intended tongue and cheek misunderstood....
This week i read a comment from a member i nearly got wound about it but at the bottom of the paragraph there was"enjoy the match"that made my day....this emotions says alot too...
It's 'tongue incheek'. Means it looks or sounds serious but you meant it to be funny.
Tongue in cheek can be misunderstood, especially on the forums. If you were face to face with someone and made a comment they could probably tell by your facial expression that you were not serious in the things that you said.
However, on here is a different story. I've read things and had to read them again to work out if the person posting was saying things 'tongue in cheek' or not. The use of emoticons certainly does help with this.
I've also refrained from replying to certain posts as I've not been 100% sure if the comment was serious or not.
This made sense to me, hopefully it will to you too......
I've used 'tongue in cheek' before but I always say I'm doing so if it's in a thread. I would never post something knowing I was being 'tongue in cheeky' without letting the reader know so. I don't use it a lot, but lately a few threads have warranted it imo.
never combine 'tongue in cheek' with 'gnashing of teeth' ot 'up your own arse'

It's just another way of referring to irony... but irony's quicker to type!
