Trusting your instincts...

Veering off from another thread about being "warned off" people for whatever reason, I'm going to throw something into the pot and see what you all think about using your instincts and how much you follow them...
For me my instincts have been something I've followed more in my later years than when I was younger. I'm not sure if that's about learning to trust them rather than going off on a tangent as I did when I was a teenager. rolleyes
I tend to follow mine now and usually find that my initial gut instinct on something is normally correct. Like everyone else I've made some bad decisions in life but they have usually been when I've gone against my instincts. I think for me it's a bit like a sixth sense and decisions I make on my instinct alone have always been the right ones.
I use my instincts on people too and so far I don't think I've done a bad job with the people I've met and made friendships with, whether it be here or in real life. I like to make my own impressions of people and although I take on board things others have said I still like to make up my own mind.
So do you trust your instincts?
yea i tend to trust them a lot more nowadays
and i am normally not far off
i like to make my own mind up on things no matter how much i am warned off someone
Earthy xx
i usually follow my instinks only being wrong when i go against them for other peoples benefit i have a pretty strong gut feeling about things
Good subject... smile
Yes, I trust my gut instinct on many things. Sometime regretted going against them and hopefully learnt from it for the future.
One experience I had was many years ago about a guy I worked with for three hours.....I went to my (at the time) line manager and told him I had this bad feeling somethng wasnt right and explained it best I could.
Few years later again worked with him for a few hours, I reported him to the same person saying again something wasnt right and didnt like his behaviour around young people.
Ten years later... this guy is in prison under child protection issues.
I went with my instinct but no-one else would listen or check this guy out because he was well known and respected in my field....I was a mere student!
I do make my mind up about people and dont let others influence me.. looking back if I was in the position of the line manager would I do the same?? Hope not..

I think it is age and a mixture of things going wrong when you ignore the gut reaction, that makes us believe in it more.
At 17 you dont want an inner thing telling you something is not quite right, also i kinda think it gets put in the same league as the spirit/afterlife thing, hence people try to ignore it as its not a sense as in smell etc and the labelling can be quite harsh.
Nowadays, i generally listen and take heed, my downfall on it (which i know about so that is good) is that i try to find the best in people, so even when i should put an end to things i tend to give it another go confused
I always go with my gut feelings on something. At a guess I would say they have proven me correct in about 90 odd percent of cases!!
Nature gave us those hairs on the backs of our necks for a reason and as no one can explain why a large chunk of the human brain seems to be unused, it kinda gets you thinking about those 6th senses...
'course some people use more bits of their grey stuff than others... blink
Yes good topic.. I for one have learnt over the years to very much go with my instincts. My instinct has proven me right so many times it's unreal. I'm very good with gut feelings and tend to suss people out very well quite early on.
There have been times when I have chosen to ignore my instincts and have ended up being hurt.
If you mean by instinct, doing what you think is right rather than what other people want you to do. Then you should always do that. Only do what you want to do, never do something solely because you think other people expect/want you to.
All the time and they're usually right. I can suss people out from the moment I meet them and I've only been wrong a few times ( namely both freakin hubbys for starters rolleyes )
I do make the wrong choices at times but only because sometimes I let my heart rule my head instead of being sensible
:scared: bloody hell DG
this is the 2nd time we've thread-started thinking exactly the same things!
I dont mean that as a 'this has been done before' ..more a stop it now you're scaring me' :giggle:
I'll pm you the link to the other/old thread as I dont want to detract from this one...Good topic, btw lol
to answer your question, cos I dont think it will do any harm to repeat it: Instinct is our own little internal warning system and it rings for a reason. If mine rings, I hear it loud and clear, and no amount of bullshit, pleading or input from others will shut it up lol I'm past the point of questioning myself over wether the 'feeling' i get about someone is right or wrong...its right, everytime. Life decisions also - career, home, uni, family etc are all based on gut instict as the ultimate deciding factor, because I trust it, implicitly.
Thanks for referring to the previous thread Darkfire cos my views haven't changed.
Yes, my gut instinct isn't often wrong but I believe that that 'instinct' is actually as a result of a process of adding up almost hidden indicators of behaviour, responses and attitudes. It's a sub-concious decision making process which is designed to keep us from harm. The older we get the more we are able to draw on this 'instinct' as we learn from lifes experiences and those we meet. Of course 'young' people have it too, it's just refined as we age.
I'd always trust my instinct and it hasn't let me done yet.
cool

Yup... but it was under "intuition" rather than "instincts" which is why I didn't find it! Found it now though! wink
The delete button is my friend too! :giggle:

And I wouldn't have that any other way! wink
i have always used my instinct and have always found it frighteningly correct, the only times i have gone against it i have come acropper.
