as in television....considering trying this line of work and was wondering if anyone had any experience of this line of work......and is it worth the effort and have you rubbed shoulders( or anything else) with the high and mighty....or were you just disappointed with the whole thing?
You need to get an 'in'. In other words if you work on Eastenders once or twice you are likely to be called back for more if they like you.
The good thing about being an extra is you can be any age/shape/size as diversity is the key.
Beware scamming websites that offer 'Extra' work but you have to pay to join.
There is a lot boredom, wasted time and waiting around - you really have to commit to it full time and be prepared for a lot of knock backs.
Also most 'professional' shows only consider actors who are represented by an agent. They should be active in promoting you but they will have a lot of people on their books. Also a lot of Extras are fully trained actors.
Get hold of a book called 'Contact'.
I've never been an Extra but I have a close friend who is an actress and is currently in an advert! lol
I know someone who played a dead body in the police department scene in Terminator....talk about glamour!

When I worked as a sound recordist I did get asked to do bits and pieces but nothing very exciting, things like go up to that policeman and pretend your bike has been stolen. lol
I don't class it as working as an extra as the stuff wasn't for general release.
I used to blush terribly!
My best mate was a stuntwoman- she was Catherine Zeta Jones' body double in a major film. Absolutely no help to you whatsoever- but Im looking for a distraction rght now confused
you made films that werent for general release

smackbottom
No. lol
Ok how far removed from your image is this. The Home Office commissioned a DVD to help the training of forensic scientists. Whilst a very interesting job at times, it could get a bit grim hanging around in morgues and crime scenes for days on end.
I have done lots of nicer sound recording jobs - but sadly none of them were pornographic.
I had no real image, i just felt like amusing myself briefly. I'm tired, its depressing. I've been up since 5pm yesterday and i want to go to bed but i have a bloody party to go to in brighton tonight so i probably wont get to bed until 6am sad
If you watch the opening scene in the first Bridget jones film where the taxi takes her to the parents home in the snow, the driver is an ex of mine.
His mate asked if Rich wanted a few days work and he had to use his own car.
The reason i knew this is i asked him what all the mess was in the back of the car and he said it was artificial snow.
Rich and Rennee sat in the car all day waiting to do several takes and Rich didnt know who she was so they sat in silence
By the way, yes i shagged him in the back of that grey cavalier just to i could say i did it where Rennee had been sitting

He did ask for that, as part of his original post.

:small-print: must read before writing. :notes:
I worked as a driver on Coronation Street, on my days off from my real job. Basically I would have to drive a car down the street (in first gear!) jump out of it round the corner and then drive another car back!!
There were lots of early starts and long days but it was fun. Once the novelty wore off I stopped doing it!! confused :? :?
I have been an extra in a few BBC series. Generally I was cast as a scruff, gypsy etc, hmm theirs a theme there lol
As already said, there is a lot of waiting around / boredom. You get fed well for free, and the moneys okay. A couple of times I also got paid for the use of my car as scenery.
Some people make a living out of it, so it can't be to bad. Casualty is meant to be a good employer of extras, although thats only good if your near Bristol.
I was lucky and was offered work through a good agency.
I found it good fun, although i'm not sure I would want to do it as a living.
From the ones I have met and there are a good few there seems to be one common thing they all did.
One was to submit good quality photographs to an agency (reputable) Another was to take all the crap thrown there way for the first year or so.. walk on parts pay one thing, speaking more etc etc.
The main thing was not one of them tried to act there way in.. being yourself is what would work.. its the normal man in the street they seek for most bits.
As for reputable agencies that depends where you live I should imagine.
As for the ones I have met lol.. they are in many shows now.. Eastenders, Emmerdale, Corrie, Holby... and all from the same agency!
True whats been said though, lots of sitting about and boredom hoping for a part but if your on a set and your face fits your in!
Mike
