T.V. watershed

Has anyone noticed recently how vague the Television watershed thingy seems to be getting a little vague. Though I hate Eastenders and Corrie with a vengeance I am subject to it being onin our house :cry: I think these push the limits of what is acceptable at times.
And as for Kids T.V :shock: all they seem to show is people picking their nose and/or puking nowadays. I'm just whinging i'm sure but I mean SPONGE BOB SQUAREPANTS for crying out loud mad

. And And and, dont stop me i'm on a roll. The noise of the cartoon programmes!! Oh. god it sets my teeth on edge I mean they all sound the same dont they. You know whiney pseudo American voices (i never heard a person from the U.S talk like it ever. and i've met 4!!) They all sound as though they're tripping or something.

Maybe the reason you don't like kid's tv is because it's for kid's dunno

Personally, I love spongebob, it's quite a clever cartoon as is The Simpson's :thumbup:
As for the watershed debate. I agree, the soaps have far too much adult content in them now. Bearing in mind that some of them start at 7pm too.

I'm with you on that point :thumbup:
As for Eastenders, I hate it and we never have it on. I think its a terrible example of how people and families behave confused

I realise that they are in many respects clever and cater in subtle ways for a large age range. The Simpsons (bleeuurrgghh) for example I agree, outwardly for kids but really far more adult stuff going on behind scenes :D The thing that really gets to me I guess though is the noise. Its insidious to me gets under my skin bigtime.

You see im not really the peace and quiet type of person. I like background noise most of the time. Even while sitting here I have music on. Maybe that has something to do with it :dunno:

I've noticed Eastenders getting naughtier recently... I mean did you see the way they were playing TWISTER last night? shocking! :shock:

Well, there's always the 'off' and 'volume' switches.
If you don't like it, write and complain or turn over - if people express their worries one way or another, the television companies will have to deal with falling viewing figures or change what they broadcast.

Just as music companies are having to rethink their strategies for paying artists and selling music, so does TV. The future of TV itself will be interesting as viewing numbers decrease with more and more people switching to TV on demand and spending more time on the internet. Advertsing revenue is definately moving to the online world.
I hardly watch TV now - watch films and dramas but if I compare to 5 years ago, its about 2/3 hours a day instead of 5/6.
The content of soaps and other programs reflect our newspapers still. Its what people watch or buy. Escapism at the extreme - the more extreme they become and bizarre, the more the figures go up - so someone is watching even its it not me and you lol

Bring back Ena Sharples!!!!!! (ok half of you dont know who she is rolleyes

I very rarely watch telly these days - and I can only think of a handful of shows that I'd deliberately set out to watch. I think telly bosses confuse popularity with quality...

The original point of this thread seems to me to be that of the times that children can watch tv. Imo the "watershed" is just another excuse for parents to avoid actually bringing up their children properly in favour of tv or the internet. Take the televisions and computers out of their bedrooms and encourage them to read suitable books. If you think a programme is unsuitable, then don't let them watch it. Simple as that.

Personally I won't allow my son to have either a TV or an internet enabled PC in his bedroom...
I don't want him watching TV late at night and I'm concerned about isolating him in his bedroom where ANYONE can talk to him through his computer...
He spends time on-line in our lounge, where we can, if we wish simply glance over at the screen, actually something we rarely do, but we can.
The TV... he enjoys the shows with the nose-picking, bogeys, vomit-throwing, farting, toilet-hunour, gunge mess etc... and I have to admit I have caught myself saying "What IS this crap?"
Then I remember TISWAS amongst others... not really sooo different... and as for the jokes we used to tell at school, well, nothing on childrens TV really crosses the same line I crossed myself as a youngster...
Accents etc don't bother me, my son is aware enough to know there is a very different real world out here, in fact the internet makes our children more world aware than ever before, used with a parents knowledge (and that is up to each of us as parents to ensure) its a tool which can lead anywhere.
Soaps... none of us watch here, lol... the TV is rarely on from 7-9pm because thats about all you can find, and tbh from the trailers etc I have often thought the story-lines seem too adult to be on before 9pm... in fact if I remember correctly didn't Coronation Street have to put a series of their shows on after 9pm a couple of years ago because the story-lines were adult? (maybe I was dreaming, I dunno confused

) I'm guessing that as that didn't continue it wasn't deemed worth the effort in terms of viewing figures?
If our son wants to watch a soap though in our house, he's gonna find it difficult, but then, at present he shows very little interest... although at 11 he is fast becoming a teenager and I think many battles lie in the future!
sigh... I've waffled again... sorry!

If every parent was like you kids just maybe they would have some better values! Three cheers for you Slurpy. The watershed is a joke really and I will tell you why. A lot of the parents that we know and that includes my Sister in this, allow their children televisions in their bedrooms, and then give them NO set bedtime as to when to turn the telly off. Also with computers....the ammount of parents who put NO security restictions on the childs PC. Ask a lot of teachers how many kids go to school still half asleep! :shock:
So when you have a 9 year old who has Sky in their room with no set time to turn it off, surely the " watershed " arguement gets thrown out of the window, as they are still watching the telly even after 11 at night.....dreadful I think. This is not an isolated incident either. A lot of parents simply just cannot be bothered...and thats a fact sadly. cool
