I have just been to Sainsbury's and, amongst other things, bought black stockings
When I got to the till, the woman serving me puicked them up, looked at me and said "you do know these are stockings. not tights, don't you?" sad
Why, I thought? Do I not look like a person who would wear stockings?

Assumptions are funny, and interesting things aren't they. We all make them all of the time and often don't even know we are making them. Everytime (ok maybe not everytime, but often) we see someone we pop them into a pigeon hole based on our own experiences, morals, fantasies and beliefs.
This whole topic began in fact based on an assumption....in fact two assupmtions. Angel only assumed that this lady was assuming that she wasn't the sort of person to wear stockings. She could just as easily been thinking " Mmmmm I'd love to see you in them" " or I'd love to get between them".
People just enjoy make assumptions, I assume ;-)

Yep I can see that. Being 6'4" has its disadvantages some times!! confused

I know exactly how you feel mate!
I hate it when people make unfair assumptions and call me shortarse.
If only they took the time to look properly they would actually see I was 6' 3"
rolleyes   Idiots
smile ;)
Love your sig Scandal.....Reef! That brought back some memories biggrin Great cornish band.
'Put your hands on' - wasn't that a Reef song?? Quite appropriate for in here.
Also find that 6ft5 has a few disadvantges - but not many and there are definately more advantages wink
i have experianced this a fair bit in the past.
i was an old school punk, bondage trousers, ripped tshirt, safety pins, the lot.
i used to have people cross the street to avoid me, why, my looks were not than threatening, and for those who bothered to talk to me, realised i was actually quite quiet, and reasonably well educated, with a great sense of humour, and would not hurt a fly.
if anything i used to run from trouble..althogh i could handle myself (thanks to Wing Tsun)
i'm now 37, and when i'm buying certain clothes (i can still carry off the skater/grunge look) i get funny looks from the spotty teen serving behind the counter.
The good thing about teh alternative scene, be it SH or alternative music that stuff doesn't seem to matter as much, judged on who you are, you're actions and what you have to say rather than the way you dress, age etc.
We "came out" as a threesome just about a year ago. We don't disguise it at all. The only people who don't know about us (as far as I know) are my three children who are all grown up and my mother. They probably do know but never mention it. Not my mother.
When we came out the reaction was quite different between men and women. The men just wanted to know "Why pick a stranger when I was around" or some variation on that but my girl friends want to know much more of the mechanics of it. How it all works or hangs together.

The one that always gets me is that the kids I teach (who all seem to ahve very stereotypical beliefs of how everyone should be) spend all day calling me a 'lesbian' because I have short hair and never wear make up. Little do they know that I am having endless sex with different men from one week to the next lol wink

oi when do i get a go sad (pout)
Oooooooooooooooooooo* another teacher. Hi Amalthea biggrin wave

Somehow, I don't want to be seen as a nice, jolly, tights wearing woman! rolleyes

And neither do I... Marmalaid might though wink
As a bloke in my mid-thirties with a boyfriend of the same age we were talking about assumptions last week... a lot of people cannot understand why 'nice boys like us' ain't married with kids - my friend's grandmother wouldn't let the subject drop last week.. we almost told her the truth to shut her up LOL
I'm not miserable, nor am I a cat and certainly not a bastard

By the way, at 37 you aren't old enough to have been an 'old school punk' unless you were there at nine years of age (approx)..sorry, mean but I couldn't resist. wink

LOL I was thinking the same thing (as I was just about old enough  ) the other thing is that then, Punk was much more of an attitude than a fashion. But each to his/her own and all that biggrin
I was 15 in 1977 and loving every bit of punk..all the philosophy still rings true to me to this day(and I still cry when I think about Joe Strummer being dead sad )..but anyone still wearing the clothes after 1977 just didn't get it. Like you say it was a state of mind not a fashion statement.

i actually started in 1979, i know a little late, but was enlightened to the ways by a friends older brother and living in london (tottenham) you sort of got drawn into things....i saw the damned in 79 and 80, along with siousie and the banshees and the ramones.
bauhaus twice in 81. my music collection is a vast array of punk, but i did devolp with it, i went on to bands like march violets, the cure, skeletal family, new model army, love and rockets, (even dali's car). i religiously followed the banshees around the uk in 83-84 on thier best uk tour.
and before you say the banshee's were not old school, siousie was a participant in the famous bill grundy interview...."go on...say something rude"
i know i was young, but old enough.....
and i still remember the 8ft high grafitti on the wall of the elephant and castle, where somebody had sprayed sex pistols in bright pink.

i can but agree about joe strummer, but what about joe ramone etc...and the late great sid....he lived his 15 minutes of fame in 5 minutes...so misunderstood....
I know what you mean, I am a Student Nurse and I know that if I said anything about my Swinging Activities then I could be struck off the record (look at Makosi from BB)
But sometimes I want to shout it from the rooftops and tell people that I'm not really this respectable stuck in the mud......LoL
But I agree with some of what has been said, I prefer to keep it to myself. I told my (now ex) closest friend and she basically called me a Slut and now we don't talk anymore sad So I have seen the risks of telling people and I would prefer to keep it to myself....

So you were wearing bondage trousers in 1979!!!! Still I guess you were still very young so I'll ket you off.
Anyway, 'young man'...I don't think you need to tell me anything about Siouxsie, love her to bits seen her dozens of times over the years....from my local youth club in Feb 1978 to the shows at the RFH and the 100 Club last year. In fact I was a little worried when the 100 Club gig appeared as an 'extra' on the RFH DVD as I was there with a 'friend', standing right up at the front, who spent most who spent most if the gig with one hand down my trousers and the other groping my breast, whe Siouxsie finished I happened to notice I had both tits out! redface Luckily, can't be seen on the DVD!
Hmmmmmm
Well I think in my 'day' life, I don't think personality wise I am much different to how I am on here.
I talk and laugh a lot. It was even mention on my annual report that I always have a smile on my face!
A couple of work colleagues know I am a naturist, but no-one knows I am a member on here. But that doesn't mean I am a different person - just that I tailor my conversation to suit the situation I am in!
I couldn't be anyone else than me really!

. I'd love to tell them exactly what I get up to, and that I wouldn't touch one of them with a bargepole mad

But if they were to form an orderly queue............. lol
Yeah it's a shame we have to keep our lifestyle from everybody, but I wonder, would it be as much fun if it were all out in the open.
I'm lucky 'cos I tell Dad about what goes on. Well he did lend me the DVD on dogging that got Lissa in to it. So it is only fair. But I wish I could share Lissas escapades with a mate.
