and yes I have...for 4 years straight from school paid for by an employer...right now my line of work is fixing and maintaining military aircraft, but while i was at college I saw loads just going from one pointless course to another...thats what upsets me!!!!

Which is why some of us waited until we know what we want to do with life before commiting to a course. Of course, we all experience the twatty students whose poor parents are having to pay out for their child who isn't interested in playing by the rules.
Trust me, the mature students (you know those who are over 30 ish) work damn hard to provide for their families, in demoralising conditions, and for pittance pay. They get home after possibly working 12 hours and have to spend time writing up lecture notes, writing essays, spending time with their partners and children, in the hope of providing a better future and you come along and brand us all as lazy? You should try it some time.
It takes courage to throw in a job, take a lower paid one and join a course full of cocky 18 year olds when you're are almost old enough to be their parent!

:worship: I have complete respect for anyone who chooses to study whilst paying the bills, looking after family etcIts bloody hard work!! Why shouldn't we have a bit of time out on somewhere like this to take our mind off all the other pressures we face?!?
Getting back to the main reason for this thread, colleges/schools/universities do have software/security in place that will block many pornographic sites, games sites and other web sites so students don't access them, but in many cases, students will find a way round it!. This security setup won't pick up all web sites that are considered unsuitable or other web sites that perhaps should be blocked such as SH! They will rely on others to inform them in blocking a web site and this is easily done.
Just for info...each student is given a username and password and everything will be logged and easily traced back to individual pc through their IP address. I am pretty sure that all IP addresses on here will also be logged when we register.

Ant, what exactly is the 'everything' that students exploit? You are obviously very well informed as to the exploits of students. I think that you will find that most of the students on here are using the internet from home to access the SH website, so they are quite obviously footing the bill for the access. At the university I attended, I do know there were warnings about trying to access any sites of an adult nature and the consequences thereof.
I would also like to echo the sentiments expressed by MQ and Calista, who pointed out that there are mature students who juggle homes/children/other jobs alongside their studies. (Iwas one of those people and I am now suitably qualified to do a professional job which I could not have got without the qualification I gained as a student)

I think (great name btw) has raised an interesting point. There have been a lot of young idiots on the site lately, deliberately causing trouble, or seeking attention, and it makes sense that they could be students. ....

I dont see how we could stop it, except to try to ignore them in the hope they will leave and find another hobby.
With reference to the student argument - I received no loans, no grants, no parental help for the four years of my degree. Therefore I had to work constantly - and always had at least three jobs - sometimes four. I could not afford to not work, but finished with no debt.
When I graduated I was told by my French Translation tutor that when the board sat down to discuss my marks, it was borderline 2:1 / 1st. ....with his input, and that of my other lecturers, I was given a 1st - because the teachers appreciated how hard I had worked to get myself an education.

Gen, while I was at university I was quite activly encouraged to view adult themed websites for my course. Just because not every course needs to know the leading technology on the web (yes this is found on adult sites first) that doesn't mean nobody is allowed to view it. Personnally I don't think banning sites from a university is a good idea. You go to the library to learn but also to recover from stressful times. If I had found this site a few years ago I would of been an awful lot stressed while at Uni. There is a fine line between missuse and casual browsing however.
I don't believe blocking web addresses is a good thing. Even government users will be looking at SH. Where would you draw the line on who is allowed to access the site?

Your the twat here. Its not the govt. who pays towards my education, its people who earn more and pay more tax. That money doesn't belong to or either. The people who pay more tax now were probably students themselves once upon a time too. As a professional man, I too will be paying a higher rate of tax than some scrubber like yourself. I'll probably pay much more back to the treasury than was ever spent on me. So I resent being called a scrounger or lazy.

I have not agreed with what Ant has said, so I have ignored him on this point only.
I agree with most of what you said about the tax and paying your way through higher tax, etc. But please keep personal insults out of this, and making reference to a recent mass murderer is bad taste, in my opinion, as there could be users of the site that had family as victims. To hope another person is dead, is a dreadful thing to say. Like I said, I did not like Ants post but I would never wish harm to him.
