Let me say right from the start that Mods/Ops/Admin do not have any access to PMs at all.
A support ticket is the only way to go with this as it may be a coding issue.
PS in edit: it may have been that the sender deleted the PM- don't know for sure!
glad you pointed this out Varca
I wont send a pm now
It does sound a bit suss, when you mention that one of them was obviously spam......but I've had a few Pms that have managed to open themselves in the past and I genuinly think this was just a glich in the system (not me being drunk and forgetting I've opened it!) especially as one was from a member of the sites staff.
Probably nothing to worry about hun but put in a support ticket just incase.
kiss
I have found PM's opened before and from a trusted source think its a glitch in the network.
Theory: Could it have been 'read' by the person sending it? I've done that in the past when I wanted to check what I'd written after a few glasses of shandy redface
Might be due to the cuts at the Post Office. wink

Let me say it once more - Ops (chatroom people), Mods (forum people) and Admin (backroom people) DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO OTHER PEOPLE'S PMs. We can't delete them, we can't read them and we can't open them.
It's entirely correct!!

I've just found an 'open' pm from Mallock. Its purely a glitch. It happens to all of us at some point.
If admin do deleted any pms it will be because they have found someone spamming the site. Words will be flagged up or the fact an account has just sent out 200 pms so all sent pms from a certain account will be deleted. No biggy really
we had this happen a few times and though maybe someone somehow got hold of our password by means that I cant explain, anyway we changed our password and not had it happen again............so far

they would be classed as spam and reasons why/how they may be deleted are covered by dawnie a few posts back

Yep! And then it would only be Admin who could do that. And they still can't read PMs - if someone reports spam PM to them they can sort the muppet out.
:P

Ohh and Meaty... I told you it was in 20p pieces and so I will have to give it to you in person :rascal:

You do know which slot to put them in, don't you? bolt
Hi, raised this issue via support ticket, admim were gr8 and supplied the following explanation:-
If user1 sends a message to user2, the message will be shown in the Sent folder as 'Unread'. If user1 then ticks the message and selects the 'Save Selected' button, a bug happens where the Sent Message is suddenly changed from being shown as 'Unread' to 'Read'. This will also mark the pending new message 'Read' in user2's mailbox. Although the mailbox has been the same for many years, this has only just come to light. We started to code a brand new mailbox recently which will include many more features and exclude this bug that we have found. Once finalised, we are eager to put this on the site once the necessary tests have been completed.
Has anyone else got the problem of the quoting option not working in pm's?
confused

expanding on what dawnie and jags and kitten said . . . it's possible to script forums and the like so they do a quick scan of the words and phrases contained within a post / ad when you hit submit, and modify / flag them accordingly. replacing a URL in a PM with something random, identifying accounts which are spamming the site, and logging the username of the sender of something which has been flagged as a breach of AUP, so you can send a friendly reminder is easy, and doesn't imply anything other than machine level access to the actual content.
for example, on one website, they had a script that changed Miserable Cat Bastard to Charming Young Gentleman, much to the bewilderment and amusement of many! lol i'm quite sure noone liked him well enough to be bothered doing it by hand every time he deigned to hit a submit button. ;)

how could the site possibly run if the people running it didn`t have access to everything?

standard method is for the PM system to be encrypted in some way, which means Admin can have full access to the inner workings of the thing, but have no access to it's content. the filters i mentioned earlier would sit between my submit button, and an encrypted PM database.

We managed to work around it though didn't we
Right.... When i 1st read this post... i thought...no way could you go and find mails read when you haven't been on....
Untill today!!! confused
I was on here this morning and logged out approx to go and get the bus to do my retail therapy.
I have just logged bk in approx 10 mins ago to find i had 5 new emails in my inbox... Now then the 1st was , 2nd was and then... right in the middle of the new mails... was a mail... showing up as Read... when i wasn't here  And it was send to me at . I was on the bus at that time
Just wondered if anybody could explain that 1 to me then??
Cheers
I have found one bug in the mailbox that causes this, whether or not there is another way, I'm not sure. I'll explain.
Once you have sent a message to another user, if you view your Sent folder obviously that message is shown as Unread. If you tick or highlight that message and use the button titled Save Selected you will notice that the Sent message is then immediately marked as Read. This also marks the sent message in the recipient's inbox as Read instead of the usual Unread.
I believe that members saving their Sent messages is causing this to happen. I suspect that Sent messages are saved so they can be used to send to another member and so on.
We had a look at the mailbox code and there is nothing that could be found which would cause this to happen and there has been no recent changes which is even stranger. The goods news as I think someone else mentioned that we have a new mailbox in the pipeline which will get rid of this bug.
Ok thats cool...
Was just asking
Thanks biggrin

Can I just ask: if we have saved messages now, will they still be there when the new mailbox thingy comes into force? Or will they be lost? And will our mailboxes fill up with all old emails when it changes (this has happened before)?

It might be too early to say, but I would imagine that everything in your current mailbox will be transferred over to the new one or possibly you might have the option to flick between the two. Nothing has been set in concrete yet. At the moment we haven't got a deadline in mind when this all might happen but I wanted to give you an idea to what is coming up as the next project.
