If you had a vote in the US election who would you vote for?

Quote by fabio

hey fab another question please...why do Americans only vote on tuesdays?

that is a good question... I am sure that is more historical than anything else... just like general elections here are always on a thursday.....
if i can find an answer i'll post it....
I think I have an answer....
In 1845, before Florida, California, and Texas were states or slavery had been abolished, Congress needed to pick a time for Americans to vote. We were an agrarian society. Farmers traveled by horse and buggy, and needed a day to get to the county seat, a day to vote, and a day to get back, without interfering with the three days of worship. So that left Tuesday and Wednesday, but Wednesday was market day. So, Tuesday it was. In 1875 Congress extended the Tuesday date for national House elections and in 1914 for federal Senate elections.

Wow that was just a great night, thank you all for your contributions, making a great thread. The very interesting insights by our American friends have really helped to make for a wonderful evening.
Hugz to you all.
I'm so proud of america right now smile
I don't think the americans had a very good choice.
Well done America you saw the person not the colour..the dream lives for us all
I'm pleased for Barack Obama and America - I think the new 44th President will be a good , not just for America but for the whole world.
I have not seen anything different in what Obama has been saying to any of the other US politicians.
This is what he is....... a politician first.....and an American politician that will put the Americans above any other country.
Is that bad......hell no.....If I was an American I would want my politicians putting me first as well.
I don't think he will be any different as he has no big change policies, that I have seen. Are there any? He seems to be just carrying on with the last blokes plans.
If I was an American I think I would of voted for Obama as well though.......just because that Palin annoyed the hell out of me.

Ya know? At 1 am I was watching the BBC election prog and I'm sat there watching all the pundits working overtime to get the coolest soundbite and it suddenly occurred to me. Why the fuck do I care? It's the same old shit, it's just with different toilet paper.
I also wondered if they're going to change the name of the White House.
Nope......the White House will still be the White House. Wasn't it painted white after the Brits (Marines) burnt it in the 1800's........Bloody 18-30 holidays are to blame lol

An excellent result!!

ditto it's excellent time for change xxx
I would love to be as cynical as a lot of you guys that nothing will change......
I spoke the my grandma yesterday, who has lived in the south, Georgia, all her life..... I think that most of those under the age of 45 will have just seen Barack Obama just the same as any other candidate....
but my gran has been thru segregation..... she was telling me thru the times when she couldn't sit next to a white person on the bus.... or had to move back for a white person when it got full....
she was telling me that she couldn't use the same public restrooms as white people....
they were basically treated as 2nd class citizens....
so to get where they were then..... to where they are now meant so much to a ton of people yesterday, I know that it is going to sound very cliche, but the amount of times I had heard the words "I thought I'd never see it in my lifetime" really stuck with me....the enormity of what has happened......
my night after I came off here at 2am.... worked out what time it would be called at , and gave my gran a call...... she was already in tears....
so at 4am I screamed "yes".... and at I broke down in tears...... I am glad that I saw a lot of people in the crowd also doing so
Barack Obama had better not be like his the person he is taking over from, because he will only get one chance, and if he messes up then it might be another 390 years before we get another shot...
hopefully it will be a lot more bi-partisan, and that is what he is saying... if he does that then the entire country will get behind him... and they will be a lot lot better....
I kept a copy of the night on my sky+ and I may well watch it again at some point, it was a piece of history for me......but I am so glad I stayed up to see it.. and so glad that I lot of people who thought they would never see it did......and those who didn't were watching from up above, and looking down with the broadest grins......

Obama will probably win so in 4 years time he can be blamed for not cleaning up the mess Dubya created, then he'll be voted out ready for some other bible-toting white, middle-aged, middle-America fuckwit. rolleyes
Basically he's about to become the US's whipping boy... the poor bastard! sad

Hooray!! America now has a bible-toting, 50% white 50% black, middle-aged, middle-American fuckwit for a president. Do you think it's the colour of his skin that makes him the best choice? If so, you are truly a racist b*st*rd. I'm glad the US have voted in a man of colour, just so that when he fucks up the First World will know that a black person can be just as big an arse-licking, sycophantic douche-bag as anyone else.
Great post Fabio mate.
Hope it all goes the way you, yours, and most of us in this counrty would like it to go.
Well done President Elect Obama. The world needs you.

You mean Idi Amin Dada and Robert Mugabe have done wonders then?
But I agree with the sentiment. Walking the kids to school I heard the kids shouting "We have done it, black power". WTF do they think Obama will do for them? Invade the UK and make us another state of the USA?
I think alot of people voted for him because of his colour, instead of the policies. Mind you I remember the last primaries with Colin Powel.......now that is a man I would vote for even if he had shit policies. So voting for someone on just their bearing is just as bad.....and I am guilty of that lol

i know they were just kids, but if it was white kids shouting out "white power"...wouldn't we have reason to be alittle worried.

To be fair, they were black leaders of mainly black-populated countries and I did specify First World as opposed to Third World. But you're right - a lot of the world appears to see Obama's win as a victory for blacks, not for all people. And of course, Thatcher was also a great role-model for feminists, wasn't she?

The only thing black about Obama is his skin, I'm just grateful his missus knows about being black.
But to answer your question, no I don't think the colour of his skin makes him the best choice. No doubt though that a lot of voters did indeed vote him in because of the shade of his epithelium.
He got in partially because of his personality, partly because of his skin, partly because of his experience but mainly because of his campaign budget. I wonder just how many people in the US who would make a far better president but couldn't get the dosh together to make it happen.
If hating people like Bush is racism then yes you could say I was racist.
Good post Fabio.
My Brother lived in Atlanta for over 20 years and even today Blacks to him still seemed like second class citizens by the way they were treated. He found it hard to understand for many years, as he had this image of the USA, as all being equal.
Yes I am sure millions voted for him just for the colour of his skin but.....to me he did seem the better out of the two.
I hope he can make the grade as President, as he does seem like a really decent guy, whether he is strong enough to sort out some of the massive problems they have, remains to be seen. But I wish him well for the sake of all of us.
