Rather than taking the 'plunge' why not go along to one of the various Adult Shows & Markets that occur around the country and talk to one of the vendors there, usually some one there selling the various types so they'll more than likely take their time explaining them to you.
(Some usually have the alcohol anti-septic type sprays/wipes with them, so might even demo it for you)
As for where to go, then given that Brum Bizarre Bazaar isn't too far away from you and the next one is on 15th January, might be worth the trip.

I would suggest that this is something you need to try first before buying, they are not cheap (a decent one will cost you north of £300) and they are not for everyone, and they are not the simplest thing to use.
In all honesty they are not that painful, its more of a tingling sensation than sharp pain, I suspect a lot of the impact is mental, given the sparks, etc.
