Some of you may have noticed that i didn't post anything on Friday, well thats cos my computer caught a cold. sad
In the end i spent an hour on the phone to a Techie at Microsoft in the USA to sort it out, i await my phone bill with anticipation.
Anyway to cut a long story short a parasite got in from "Netvenda" WATCH OUT FOR THAT it starts as an infrequent pop up that gets more regular until it just takes over.
The Techie got me back on eventually and took me to the Microsoft website where there are 2 totally free and totally fantastic programs " AD-Aware" and "SPYBot" i recommend that you down load them and do a systems search quick. The URL is at the bottom of this thread.
In total they pulled nearly 2000 virus's out of my system, not bad for being on the web a month, i know its my own fault, its a tough lesson to learn. mad
The worst part was not being able to get on SH !!!!!!!!!!!!
You could have saved a lot of time and money by reading the Sticky at the top of the Cafe page about Virus'

Sarg i did and down loaded Zone Alarm, it missed it. The microsoft stuff updates itself for free tho.
ZoneAlarm Free does nothing to block programs of this type, contrary to widespread belief it is not an antivirus program, purely a firewall (and Microsoft gave you a perfectly good one of those if you have XP anyway).
A good free AV program is available from:
Sad truth is you have to run them all . Much like hairdressers everyone will tell you their software is fabulous , but they still only get updated at many and various times . Unfortunately although they claim they do the major virus and adware software manufacturers do not cooperate and so sometimes one will have the nasty listed and some wont . We run two ad removers and two anti-virus programmes update every time we use them and we still get the odd nasty that we have to remove manually .
there is always a way , and a google search usually reveals a clever removal tool from one of the 'geek' boards although it can take a few hours to hunt them down . McAfee even though they are virus software vendors as well as McNorton both regularly publish small specialist 'stinger' software bundles that adress specific viruses and they are worth searching for . Its all just a question of timing , the bug hits the net and then the software has to catch up .
We downloaded and installed the XP firewall but it seemed to hate all our programmes that wanted access to the net , and much like all of Billy Gate's software also contained some stuff we didnt want at all ( like software that prevents peer to peer sharing that was developed with the major record companies ) so we have stuck to McAffee wall and zone alrm is also good .
Its a battle that never ends , so dull as it is you have to have a routine or your machine will get stuffed with shite within a month .
Good luck xxx

But there are links in there to Adaware and Spybot as well of lots of other useful AV software.

Spy-Bot & Ad-Aware are not Microsoft software. Both are very good & I use them on a weekly basis, along with the Mozilla Firefox browser which is far less buggy, & I haven't seen a popup since I installed it!!! biggrin biggrin As Firefox isn't MS, it doesn't offer a hacker dozens of ways into my PC. I don't use Outlook or Outlook Express for the same reasons.

Downloaded ??? It comes with XP confused
There's no software in XP firewall that "prevents peer to peer sharing" whatsoever. In fact, it's rather easier to convince XP firewall to permit port forwarding than it is most other firewalls.
Incidently, Microsoft own Network Associates (McAfee)
We geeks will happilly sort out problems with port access etc. all you need do is ask smile
