Please everyone note:
A member of the site PMd me to tell me they'd received an email from me (well from my email address at any rate).
They did the right thing and deleted it without opening it.
I didn't send it. I would never email a site member as a way of making an approach to them. I would always PM.
It can't be an address book virus because I don't have the member's email address. Or can it?
Can anyone suggest an explanation?

Thanks

bolt
Have you ever emailed this person?
John
No never.
Is it possible that someone who I have emailed in the past has got a virus which is using their address book contacts?
My comp. comes up clean in all my scans.

Exactly the same thing happened to me this week.... i.e. a SH member telling me that I had emailed them a virus when I hadn't emailed them at all (though I have emailed them in the past I think).
confused :? :? :?
Yes it is, the virus will scan all the addresses it finds, then sends mail from all that it finds, so it could be someone you have emailed. Or a site that you have joined and used your email address could have been hacked, and they are using your address, to spam.
John
Hmmmm -interesting.
I have had e-mails from a strange site offering "explicit material" that purport to come from a friend or from someone who has passed on my private address. I have deleted everything and utilised the "unsescribe" option.
I am not a techy whiz kid so if this is normal internet crap than I appologise but it has got me thinking over the last two days.

Ahh no not the un-subscribe....
Good sites would not spam you, and you would have activly signed up to them. Naughty sites will spam anyone they can get, and normally the un-subscribe is used to confirm a 'Live' email address and spam you even more!!
Unfortunatly it is very easy to say an email came from any address, and a lot of viruses and worms out there now scan the infected PC address book, emails, word docs, everything for addresses. Then they select a random from and to address so you never know who really sent you the blasted thing... clever but dammed annoying mad
Ok Thanks for that Horous.
Blue, maybe the thread could be locked as I think it's achieved it's purpose which is to act as a warning? From what you've said maybe the problem's more widespread than I thought (which was that it was just me) redface surprisedops:
Or let it run for a bit in the hope that more will see it? dunno
I'll leave it to your better judgement. :undecided: :undecided: :undecided: Thanks.

I think it needs to be left unlocked ES.... more people might have this problem recently and might want to comment further on it smile

Thanks (I think!) for your reply.
Jeezus - should I have left well alone?
Am I opening my PC up to MORE problems by going down the unscribe route?
I really do not understand all this.

Just to say that it was me that got the e-mail.
It just said "Hi" with an attachment. It came through in my spam folder......this is what made me wary at first. Second, ES is an estblished member who I believe would not send unsolicited e-mails. I deleted it then contacted him.
I would be interested in how they managed to send it to me as ES and I have never swapped e-mail addys and not many people have my e-mail addy. In fact.......it is about 6 people have the e-mail addy that it came in on. So can anyone enlighten me please...........
Dave_(Confused)_Notts
Unless ES has his e-mail on this site somewhere which's accessible to the masses, then there's no way he could have.
The only thing I can think of is someone is using this site to trawl for e-mail addresses to use to proliferate the spam. If anyone receives any strange looking e-mail then they should delete it. I get lots of unsolicited e-mails to my e-mail address on this site from people who use it to hawk they're ads, might be nothing more than a malicious version of that.
I have a feeling we'll be seeing a few more of these in the next few days/weeks
I was asked privately to respond to this, so here's my input:
The only way the email ady's can be linked thru the site, since ES never directly emailed DN or vice versa, is if both of you are using those email addresses as part of your contact info on this site.
so yes this would mean that we are all open to this happening, as hackers/spammers are uisng robots to trawl the site for ady's and using one against the other. This is true of almost any place on the internet where you input your contact info. I'm having trouble right now with another one of my ady's ... the actual email client was hacked and I have been sent email to this address under the guise of being the network admin saying they needed my credit card info again or my account would be terminated.
Since the only way to really lock down the site against this kind of hacking is expensive, I'd say it's best just to get the word out and that no one should open an email from another site member unless notified... also, turning up the spam guards on whatever email addresses you are using with this site.
if one or both of you are not using the email addresses that this happened with, on this site, then that's a whole diff. story...
ive had loads in last two weeks,,,

Hi folks, just to make you all aware that there is a virus going around utilising MSN as a way to infect emails, please be very careful when accepting file transfers and do not add anyone who you may not know.
I will see if i can remember the fix for this later on as it's been a long day.
Good sites would not spam you, and you would have activly signed up to them. Naughty sites will spam anyone they can get, and normally the un-subscribe is used to confirm a 'Live' email address and spam you even more!!

The unsubscribe option is meant to be used to verify the address yes. But good spammers will not need to verify addresses anyway. They will use what is known as a tracking image. A 1x1 or If somebody opens upt he email they will already know the address is live.
Not only that they will also know what emails have recieved a 'post' status. Yes you might of deleted their email without opening it, but as long as the address recieves a post then they know it is a valid email.
This is why a lot of spam busters and other software comes in handy. These are mainly used to catch the emails, verify if they are spam or not. Let the good emails through (asking you first usually) and then send an error back to the senders address stating an invalid email address. This would come back as an error and so if they ever clean their emailing lists they will at least take out all of the addresses that don't work.
I hope that puts the willies up ya all.
today one is from
its someone useing this site whos doing it
I never get any emails !!!
I wouldn't mind even if it was just one with a virus............. Atleast I would feel like someone loved me !!
Feel a bit like Bridget Jones when she checks her answerphone and it says u have no messages...... not even from your Mother !!
This is a common email trick called "Spoofing", where the sender forges the "From:" email address.
There are a number of new viruses (virii?) out and about so make sure your Virus Definitions are up to date. And don't open any emails with attachments from people you don't know or you aren't expecting.

thats the same as my ones.... its a hi or a hello.. or a i got something for you
goes in my bulk folder
I once had a account which I had not accessed for about 6 weeks, when I did I had 78 emails, about a dozen of which were from SH members who I KNEW had not e-mailed me.
Most of them had a nasty little virus attachment with them.

There is a way to prevent email addy viruses from progressing and compromising your address book.
Set up a bogus entry eg
__
as this is preceded by an underscore it will be the first entry in your address book. It is not a valid email addy so the virus will concentrate on trying to send to that address and not progress through to the genuine entries below.
This is not a cure so antivirus software should be run as a routine. If it has managed to get through before your antivirus has been updated - you may find it picked up after the antivirus updates. Meanwhile you will have prevented further infection to other people's computers.
Hope this helps
Steph

Hi Steff,
This may confuse some of the early worms, but the latest ones scan more than your email address list, and will happily send to everyone on it from anyone on it sad
As for the hidden 1x1 transparent gifs (or even visible pics) this can be a problem. That is why modern email clients like latest outlook, , and Thunderbird won't download images until you say to smile More scary are the worms that exploit faults in mail software so even previewing the message will infect your PC! Easy to defend against, keep your pc patches up to date, this is just as important as AV and firewalls so don't forget it.
A lot of the nasty worms of old exploited holes that were fixed months previously, but people were behind.
There is a link to my email addy in my profile so any member of the site would be able to see it.
I have in the past included my email addy in posts in LMU although I haven't done so for some time now.
I get regular stuff in my junk/spam folder (usually 2 or 3 a day) but just delete 'em without opening 'em.
It's not really a problem for me but I posted this thread because I didn't want people to think it was me. As I said before I never, but NEVER, email anyone on this site as an initial way of getting in touch. I ALWAYS use a PM.

I am on a few other sites but haven't used them for ages. They can do what they like with the photos and ads I've posted (and probably do) but, hey! I am exhibitionist so being in Google is ok with me. biggrin :D
Just don't do unsolicited emails, ok?

Fuck, it came out in dark blue and some black(not red or my normal blue). Now how did that happen? dunno :undecided:

They're getting cleverer all the time. This is the latest scam:

As a tip, if you get plain spam (selling viagra or penis extensions etc) NEVER use the unsubscribe option. Just register with and send them the spam. They'll take care of reporting it to the correct abuse department on your behalf without letting on that you even exist.

Not sure if it helps but here goes - I have to deal with Microsoft alerts for work - if you're MSN then check out for the latest virus (April 2005)
McAfee is a very good AV provider and it would be worth anyone's time to take advantage of a 90 free trial.
