Any views as I have a new pup and considering using this diet. Has anyone used it or know much about it?
BARF is “Bones and Raw Food” diet.
I dont know about the diet but if you saw the damage bones do to a dogs insides you would never give them to yours

Thanks defo not getting bones, what about Green Tripe?... he's on Royal Canin, but is a bit of fussy eater.
I always mixed complete food with a bit of butchers (not too much added stuff in that wet food). Mine was (still is!) fussy too!
No bones for dogs? Fussy eaters ? Diets?
ffs...you can tell we live in a pc world. Even the dogs are protected by the human rights act. Woof. lol

No never, under any circumstances. Nothing to do with 'PC'. I have seen the damage they cause, its not very nice.

Hel I have had 3 German Shephards over 24 years and they all had a nice juicy lamb bone, every now and then.
They " woofed " it down, and never ever had any problems. Mind their breath was not brilliant afterwards.

We have a vet in the family and trust me, I have seen the damage bones can cause. It was heartbreaking for the owner to see his beloved 'Rottie' being put to sleep.
Is there a vet in the house? Please edumacate Kent
When our dogs were pups we started them on Science... that worked out too expensive and we put them on Purina dry food.
Now they're classed as 'older' dogs we have had to change as they were bringing up the dry dog food daily undigested.
They eat twice a day and have pure dog meat. Feeding twice a day is better for their stomachs than one meal a day, that's too much. 6

Feed ours twice a day - dog meat and a dry small dog mixer even though one is a big 'un.
There's bones and bones. Beef and lamb are tough enough and will not splinter and so they can knaw on 'em but don't let 'em get too small as they'll choke. There's some damn good artificial bones that lsat ages and do their teeth the power of good these days. Any other type of bone is a killer!

Yep agree, we don't do the bone thing, too wary of splinters, boxers have very delicate stomachs, but I'd be especially wary in puppies Zeddies, my advice ... stay clear lol

Feed em what they would eat in the wild....
Postmen
I keep and breed lurchers and terriers, as long as you stay off bird bones, you're fine, this is what dogs eat in the wild, it keeps their teeth and jaws strong and their gums healthy. I guess I'm in a lucky position as I'm a farmer with a steady supply of mutton, rabbit and venison bones and offal etc
would say it's dependant on what dog you have but we have fed our g/s the old fashioned way, as a pup he had best mincebeef / minced tripe / bran / .
now he eats just 15 half raw chicken wings a day.(interesting to read the relation of a vet says bones are no good for them as a friend of mine who is the breeder / importer of very expensive g/s pups feeds them on nothing else but raw chicken wings from an early age).
Ive had two GSDs and boy are they fussy with their little delicate tummies!! The one i have now has complete dried food with a bit of tinned added so its not too dry. We also have a collie cross who will eat anything and has no probs with his digestion at all.
I never give my dogs raw bones tho, did do years ago and he immediately threw the whole lot up!
Suze xx
When I got my first Siberian Husky about 25 years ago and I went to give him frozen dog food straight from the freezer my then partner shouted "FFS Thaw it out in the microwave first".
My eyebrows went up rolleyes and then I said "And when he is in Antarctica pulling his sled, his microwave is where???"
So he got his rock solid frozen meat and lived until he died of old age at 17 years old cool couldn't have done him any harm lol
He also got the cheapest dog food at the time which was Brandy I think and he went on to win many dog shows and challenge certificates.
Even went to Crufts a few times but he hated being in the car and it was too far for him to pull it
A friend of mine has always fed hers on raw chicken bones...they don't spinter (apparently!) when they are raw.

Try your local Vet or R.S.P.C.A.
You can ask as much as you like on forums always best to take professional advice. As far as Im aware, non of us here are pro's in animal care/welfare.
this diet Imo is great for dogs there are a few drawbacks! Time, money and access to the foods. everything is pretty much fresh and has to prepared by you, as opposed to complete dry foods that you scoop up the correct amount according to breed/ weight and similar for tinned food with biscuits. Basically feeding your dog this ensure they have a diet that isnt processed but its not cheap its time consuming and some people just cant stomach it.
look online for the uk barf club for more info.
hope this helps
