Using mIRC helps a great deal to cut out the problems with the uninvited chat windows that you get using Java. When a unwanted private window opens on java your cursor automatically jumps into the new window and you end up chatting to the wrong person and maybe even sending them information that you don't want them to have (this is why it's against the rules guys!). You don't have the same problem with mIRC, you get alerted that the new window is there but your cursor stays where it is so you can happily ignore it.
One way to slow down the room is to cut out the chat from all the trollers that just spam the chat window. If you see someone who's sole contribution to the chat is "I've got big tits, who wants to see them on webcam?" (yeah right) then type the following command:
/ignore username
The next time that username puts something into the room it won't appear in your window. I wouldn't recommend doing it with too many usernames but if you're genuinely struggling to keep up you can at least keep out some of the unwanted background noise.

I remember a film once about The Hundred Years War. Early in the film was a scene of peaceful green pastures and calm prosperity and then all of a sudden the desperate devastation of the War burst in with a badly beaten up refugee from the conflict. (I think it was called The Valley)
As a forum dweller the chat room seems a bit like the 100 Years War part of the site - the Forum being the Valley. Every now and then some poor battered soul appears in some state of distress - get walloped by a mod (only joking) turns around and then re-enters the fray.
This sounds like an interesting area - I might try it.
Ta for the advice Marya... will venture in there more often!
You can try out Mirc free for 30 days, and they are currently donating 100% of the $20 fee to charity, which isn't bad.
As for the chatroom, being a single male it's almost impossible to stand out from the hopeless cases who write things like "n e girls in London wnna shag" every 30 seconds and hold a conversation.
I think the problem is that there are 2 different things going on in the chatroom, people chatting, and people on the pull, with all the regulars chatting and all the new people on the pull. Perhaps splitting the room in two would help? It's not a very welcoming place at the moment.
