What Do You Think About The Chatroom?

Using mIRC helps a great deal to cut out the problems with the uninvited chat windows that you get using Java. When a unwanted private window opens on java your cursor automatically jumps into the new window and you end up chatting to the wrong person and maybe even sending them information that you don't want them to have (this is why it's against the rules guys!). You don't have the same problem with mIRC, you get alerted that the new window is there but your cursor stays where it is so you can happily ignore it.
One way to slow down the room is to cut out the chat from all the trollers that just spam the chat window. If you see someone who's sole contribution to the chat is "I've got big tits, who wants to see them on webcam?" (yeah right) then type the following command:
/ignore username
The next time that username puts something into the room it won't appear in your window. I wouldn't recommend doing it with too many usernames but if you're genuinely struggling to keep up you can at least keep out some of the unwanted background noise.

bolt Off to hide in the chatroom's quiet corner lol
biggrin :D Jon_TJ has a quick look down the post to see who will be added to his $h1t list
Blimey - nobody lol
The chat room is fun (for most) but those who disregard the rules make it harder for everyone else. TJ still gets unwanted PVT's even though I'm sure most people know we are man and wife, and she only sits 4 feet away from me on her own PC! - She had 18 unwanted PVT's in half an hour one night! mad :x
What most peeps seem to forget is that the Ops/Moderators are all 'normal people' who volunteer to do the job. We are also there for fun. If we spend the whole day/night sending out moderator warnings, dealing with complaints and booting people, it aint no fun for us!
Maybe once or twice we will get a bit pi$$y and have short fuses, and the serial PM'ers may get a boot before a warning, especially if the room is busy - hard luck, stick to the rules.
The Ops all have software which shows if you have used different nicks, if you have more than one window open etc - and between us we don't miss much. So those of you who get booted for PM'ing etc. and come back with a different nick wink :x that just confirms to us the fact you are there to make a nuisance of yourself :x .
We all know who the serial PM'ers are, the constant rule breakers etc - so beware rolleyes
For the rest of us who use the chat room for what it is, a place to chat and have fun, enjoy it! and the ops will try our best to make your stay a pleasant one :D  :P
Oh yeah - I forgot to say, me and TJ also only get a few hours kip a night, say lol in a normal sentance, argue over who should go and make a drink, eat meals at the PC and have become strangers to each other, all due to the bloody chat room lol
Adictive - too bloody right :P rolleyes wink

Alterternatively, if you've got your @ on, you could set the room mode to +m, run a script to voice everyone when they enter, then devoice anyone who gives you a problem. They can then type away to heart's content and nothing they say will appear in the room. The advantage of this over banning is that most trolls when banned simply reconnect and come back with a new nick and new IP and you have to ban them all over again. This method cuts down on the time spent managing the ban list.
Another rather sneaky wink way to deal with flooders/spammers, is to `ban them but not `kick. This will allow them to remain in the room and will have a similar effect to devoicing, with the added twist that unless they have chanserv messages set to display in the active window (cs will say something like "cannot send to channel") or they have the status window in view, they won't even know that nobody can see them biggrin

I remember a film once about The Hundred Years War. Early in the film was a scene of peaceful green pastures and calm prosperity and then all of a sudden the desperate devastation of the War burst in with a badly beaten up refugee from the conflict. (I think it was called The Valley)
As a forum dweller the chat room seems a bit like the 100 Years War part of the site - the Forum being the Valley. Every now and then some poor battered soul appears in some state of distress - get walloped by a mod (only joking) turns around and then re-enters the fray.
This sounds like an interesting area - I might try it.
Ta for the advice Marya... will venture in there more often!

Yes, but you have to pay $20 (about 12 quid) for it, if I'm not mistaken, whereas java is free.
Mike.
You can try out Mirc free for 30 days, and they are currently donating 100% of the $20 fee to charity, which isn't bad.
As for the chatroom, being a single male it's almost impossible to stand out from the hopeless cases who write things like "n e girls in London wnna shag" every 30 seconds and hold a conversation.
I think the problem is that there are 2 different things going on in the chatroom, people chatting, and people on the pull, with all the regulars chatting and all the new people on the pull. Perhaps splitting the room in two would help? It's not a very welcoming place at the moment.

's free for evaluation as mentioned, after that you need a registration key, which you have to pay for.

yep, mIRC's great once you get a decent script for it, and get used to it. would never use java now even if my mIRC crashed.
and yes you should register and pay but it doesn't actually time out like it threatens to.

Who actually pays to use Mirc? ...............
After 30 days you will get a browser window asking you to pay but if you close it you can then proceed to connect to the relevant IRC server.
.

Your right Pleasurelady, ive never even considered paying for my version of Mirc
