i used to think of multiculturalism as a good thing... allcultures getting along, blending together and existing harmoniously.
However... am I wrong in now thinking that Multiculturalism is the existance of seperate cultures, alonside one another, but remaining just that... seperate...
now, I think that is a bad idea... one will always seek dominance over another... more rights... special demands.
It breeds discomfort between groupings in my opinion.
lp

Iheard once a radio 4 programme about integration etc etc. It stated that in the next 30 generations ( generation being 30 years) that we will all be speaking a common tongue and for the vast majority our skin colour will be almost the same throughout.
If we get through the next 1000 years i'd like to come back then ( although i'd like to come back very very wealthy)

Indeed Lostie... but there-in lie some of the difference between the establishment of a Multicultural Society... (groupings seperate)
... and the encouragement of a culturaly/racialy Integrated Society. (mixed)
I like a bit of a mix-up myself

And in Perry Barr, there is the Saddam Hussain Mosque, and this was whilst he was still ruling Iraq.
How far do you think I would get if I tried to build the Catholic church of St Joseph In Pakistan/Iraq/Egypt/Morroco/Turkey/Afghanisthan?
Yet the UK is full of Mosques an Temples.

That is because Britain is tolerant and understanding of others faiths. Its just a shame that others are not as tolerant as we are.
You go to a middle eastern country with a cross around your neck, as I know somebody that did, and see what kind of dirty looks you would get.
This is a very tolerant country and rightly so, but that should work both ways, but a lot of times it seems it is not.

Now that is controvercial..and as honest an opinion as you will get

Its a multicultural society not an integrated one. If it was integrated we would have a race that was uniquely distinctive and quite different from Anglo Saxon, Roman and French origins. There would be mixtures from Africa and Asia too.
As it is the main groups are large enough to sustain their own breed, and subsequently their own cultures. each culture lives along side the others. But they don't integrate. They are in partnership.

Actually this is a really good comment, and also I hadn't thought of this before, but we could ALL have multicultural ancestory, who knows? dunno
I know some of my ancestry. My Italian bits have gone. I speak a few words, I did not learn them from my family. I do like Italian food, and make a good pizza, no hut-muck for me. Most of my family would say that Italian food was foreign, even the part Italian side.
One side of my family is Northern and the other Southern. My grandmother was always jibbing about the uncivilized south.
The fact is I have chosen who/what I am, I am Saxon. Not just any Saxon. I am the true perfect one. Ready to stand by my beliefs and my duty, defend the down trodden and innocent, and smite evil.
Then the real fact is all my Saxon/Nordic blood has been diluted. I have no culture of my own, so I am free to choose one. I choose a culture that may be as floored as the rest, but it is me, it defines me. Then again I am just me, and I have chosen what suits me!

They are catholic churchs in Pakistan, Kashmir, Tunisia... I have visited these, the rest I dont know of...
Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Karachi, Pakistan and in 1978 the cathedral celebrated its centenary. The Pakistan Post Office issued special commorative stamps on the occasion.
St. Vincent de Paul Cathedral, Tunisia
Saint Louis Cathedral, Carthage, Tunisia
All Saints Church, Srinagar, Kashmir
Church of Virgin Mary, Jumma, Kashmir
St Mary's Church, Jumma, Kashmir

Well what is a true Brit?
I think if most of us look back over generations we will see a complete mix.
I for one although born here and three generations back were to, if I go back further from there, there is Irish, Italian, and French. I think that most of the people of Britain are already a mix of allsorts. lol
Start tracing your family trees it is fascinating.

There are areas of Birmingham with english street names replaced with arabic streetnames and banners over head that say, Allah is the one and only true God, you will serve no other, is that multi culturalism?

In Pakistan, Kashmir and India, all the most of the street signs are in english and quite a few are english street names from when britain was in India, is that multi culturalism?
I am a muslim and I don't want to get into a debate about religion... but I can say Allah & God are the same... from my understand is the same for the Jewish faith... in Islam all of all three faiths are called people of the book... all start with Abraham... Mecca is where Abraham built the first place of worship for God...
Christianity
Judaism
Islam
Bahá'í Faith
these are all Abrahamic religions these are monotheistic faiths
As a muslim I can pray in a church, synagogue, mosque or anywhere I choose to pray as long is clean. I have tried to pray in a church and been told to leave, stopped from being a God Parent for being a muslim by the church.
Islam's holiest book is the Qur'an. The verses of the Quran were revealed from God through the Archangel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad on separate occasions. However, Muslims also believe in the religious texts of Judaism and Christianity in their original forms (not the current versions). Torah, Old Testament.

Going for a curry or a kebab on the way home from the pub.
Phoning for a Chinese or a Pizza ready for when the big match starts.
Booking a holiday in Majorca or Tenerife just after Christmas.
Drinking a foreign wine with the Sunday dinner.
Yup, all typical British customs and traditions

I never said they were good traditions or ones we dont share with other cultures but they are still ours.
As the title of my post states..I feel 50 / 50 about being of Mixed Race background in the U.K in 2008.
In this nation we do not have a active Far Right unlike other nations in Europe. So I do feel safe but then I don't feel welcome in certain areas of my own city Liverpool.
I am made to feel not welcome or get dirty looks when walking down a street of a un-friendly area.
Yet when I look at the English national Football Team, I see Men near the same age as me playing & doing the bussiness...Theo's Hat Trick... biggrin
Lewis in F1... :D
Yet if you look at Eastenders where is the major NON - White character... confused: If it's set in East London that's now the most diverse place in the U.K..so where is the major character on par with ...Phil or Ian or Dot or Well Hard.
So I have a major beef with the media but it's slowly getting better.
Things are good & bad..50 /50. Yet the thing that get's me is respect for each other & the enviorment. Litter, Dog Mess, Vandalism...
If you really want to know the diffrence between Black People to White People..here is your answer:

 rolleyes

Thats a shame cos I reckon you'd pretty damn fine in a morris outfit.
