What is your definition of the word geek?

O hummm the more I hear of some peoples explanation of the word Geek.
I so want to be one.
I am under the belief it is someone that has knowledge about diverse topic like the universe, the understanding of the big bang theory, those that understand the term a million light years away. dunno rolleyes
All this just goes whoooooosh over my head.
I so wish I could understand and comprehend so much more! redface
I am I suppose always destine to be dim. lol
Is it just men that are geeks?
I find some subject’s sooooo hard to get my head around.
Sometimes I just act stupid, but then that could be because I am.
Am I alone in this?
Are you a Geek?
I don’t want to be an alone dimwit!
sad
Geeks (and nerds) have a natural fascination for 'how stuff works', for taking things apart just to have a look and either putting them back together or trying to stick them together with something else thats been stripped and seeing what new shit you can come up with. Geeks have given the world everything from radio and tv to cars and the internet......look at Nasa, it's just a bunch of geeks who've watched too much Star Trek and worked out they can get the American Govt to give them a huge pot of cash to build their own toy collection with.
Forget sports stars and movie stars, geeks are the people to idolise wink
(errrr, i might be a bit geeky at times......but i bet Peanut posts before me and explains it better biggrin )
almost forgot, what's the difference between a geek and a nerd?
a geeks just a nerd that gets laid occasionally

Well, take the Hadron Collider thingy in Switzerland, a geek/nerd magnet if ever there was one
A geek will rush home and set about making something similar out of old bits of radio, television and ford cortinas.
Within a month or so, geeks will have cobbled together their own version at a fraction of the price and will be taking it to collider conventions, complete with suitable novelty outfit to wear, usually knitted by an indulgent aunt, along with a hat made out of some of the compulsory silver bits n bobs attached from the essential geek tool kit (wire wool, wire, fuses etc).
They will have a great time discussing the pros and cons of their colliders to other geeks on forums such as this. From this they will learn more and tweek their colliders to perfection.
The difficult part of getting the collider to work will be trying to freeze your contraption down to - Even too an extreme geek standard, that's 'bluddy freezing'. Chances are,the ford cortina casing won't much like being that cold, so they'll need to think hard about how they're going to do it.
A nerd on the other hand will not be as hands on, more of an information gatherer - used to boggle us conventional mortals. They will read every bit of information possible about the collider, not mention it to anyone, then just drop it into regular conversation
Typical collider conversation with a nerd:
Conventional: Did you hear about the Large Collinder thingy in Switzerland, Deborah from across the road said they used to use it for cheese making, but Health and Safety shut it down cos it got clogged up with Protons and the Swiss don't want Protons cos it looks like they're taking sides when they're neutral, so they shut the cheese plant down they did  Now they've gotta make it dead cold like, so it can work, don't know why cos it was obviously working when it was making cheese, so anyway, they're doing that now, but this time instead, they've got to make it - degrees c, which is bluddy cold even by geek standards  Deborah also said that Britain has played a part in this experiment and sent 3 of them over to help biggrin ......
Yayyyyy go us
Nerd: That's 0 K rolleyes
Conventional: What's ok?
Nerd: No zero K
Conventional: What's a zero K?
Nerd: Sigh  Don't you know anything, that's Absolute zero, there is nothing colder that that.
Conventional: Doubt my cod will agree with that statement there nerdy, he would say he couldn't get any colder...... or he would if he had a head and wasn't covered in batter confused
So there's the difference :smile2:
OMG does that make me a nerd now, for knowing the difference?
but it does.

I must be a nerd! I was looking up the definition of "geek" when I found this about computers! The appendix page is useful but the humour page is very geeky!
redface bolt
nerd is american term for geek....but this is a word famously used by lazy people who dont care to know the in's and out's of how things work behind the scenes....geeks rule the world, without them we would even know floods is coming our way next friday
Easiest way is... if you can watch The Big Bang Theory and understand where the protagonists come from then your a geek, if you think they're sad for liking Klingon Boggle then you're not
I have a pretty pink anorak with fluffy tassles ....... does that make me a geek? :giggle:

Im an anorak redface

Oh good lord, that's just given me memories of my dad when we were kids.
He pulled up at a garage to do something with the car. A woman attendant came and asked if he needed a hand........ shock horror a woman asking blokey dad if he wanted a hand, a female woman at that!!!! As if!!! rolleyes
Dad sent her away with a flea in her ear, how would a mere woman know more than him, by eck what's the world coming to and all that stuff, under car bonnets is mans work! :hunk:
Anyway, he finished doing whatever he had to do and closed the bonnet......... but got the toggles of his anorak (which were highly fashionable at that time I might add confused ) caught underneath
What to do, what the bluddy ell to do :uhoh: Every time he moved an inch, his anorak shrank rotflmao He tried to get to the bonnet catch, but although the toggle string was getting longer, his anorak just wouldn't shrink any more - he was stuck.
He had to eat humble pie and try to attract the female attendant to help his predicament :rotflmao: By the time she got to him, his anorak was half it's size, the toggle strings 4 times their length, and dads circulation in his legs nearly cut off :rotflmao:
Serves him right!! :lol2: He never did go back to that garage tho....... and whenever someone mentions anoraks, it always reminds me of how dangerous they are

So what was Fred Dibner and people of his ilk? Geek, nerd or anorak? And the first person who mentions that I'm showing my age by dredging that name up is in for a slap  :sparring: duel smackbottom
A geek is a derogatory term for anyone brighter than me. :smug:
