I just decided to take a look at the Groups that Ive joined in the past and was sort of surprised to see that the most recent update on them (and I was a member of about 10) was 18 months ago.
Yes, yes I know that I could contribute but I guess thats the point. Why bother when there are chatrooms and "proper" forums.
Are there any out there that members have found useful?
think peeps join them in case they get invites to things....never had a meet on any of them.
best way is forums or social or chat rooms......
We were invited to one and joined, and found pretty much the same as you. We did make a couple of contributions, perhaps hoping that it would start something off, maybe the group needed contributions and had become jaded we thought.
However, there was no such acknowledgement after about a week, so we binned it. We have been invited to a few since, but didn't join based on our previous experience of them.
I suppose if you have a specific niche interest they would be useful, but as a previous poster has already said, you will get a much wider audience on the forum. Of course once you establish your circle, then you could establish the group, but other than that I don't see the usefulness of them.
Another site has groups many of which have limited activities and just take up space on the server - one of the reasons who I am not sending them any more $ because I am fed up with the technical imcompetance of the programmers. I digress though.
I personally feel that local groups (particularly in more isolated parts of the country)offer the potential to find out a bit more about likeminded folk in your vicinity from past posts before making contact. However like anything it is what you put into it and whilst groups have many members very few post & I don't understand why. I have joined several and monitor the forums and have not noticed any posts at all.
Its a pity as I find the soundbite approach of chatrooms to be limiting.
