I ws born in Wales in 1888. I was the second of five illegitimate sons.
I studied history at Jesus College, Oxford. In 1910 I gained a First Class Honours in my final examinations, in part through a notable thesis on Crusader Castles. Research for this had included a lengthy walking tour in Palestine and Syria.
