I suffered a nervous breakdown in 1908 but recovered to become one of the most hated men in the world in the second decade of the twentieth century. I died in Holland during the Second World War. You will have seen my photo many times – but probably not a photo of my left hand.

would even say Horatio Herbert (bad initials they are, aren't they? )
I ws born in Wales in 1888. I was the second of five illegitimate sons.
I studied history at Jesus College, Oxford. In 1910 I gained a First Class Honours in my final examinations, in part through a notable thesis on Crusader Castles. Research for this had included a lengthy walking tour in Palestine and Syria.
